Loose Steering, Column Focus
Today I made an effort to diagnose loose steering in my truck and installed the "Rock Solid Steering" kit from this guy that I bought a few years ago on a whim (realized before installing that it wouldn't fix my problem, but did the install anyway). http://rocksolidramtrucksteering.com/ I have to saw the wheel back and forth quite a bit, and tightening the box as recommended didn't take much slop out, it required very little change. My intermediate steering shaft has lots of lateral slop in it at the sliding joint, but I couldn't hold one end and rotate the other relative to it (radial slop undetected). It may be replaced soon, so any suggested brand is welcome. The rag joint seems to be in fine shape. I do have a little bit of slop here, but I'm not sure it matters. I didn't have the column out of the truck to study every facet of how it works, so any advice here is welcome, as well. The parts book didn't help my understanding in the slightest. I stole this photo and added my own notes.

thermostat help !!!
@wil440if I recall your return goes back to the sender, correct? Besides the very obvious, one difference between your lift pump and mine is that my relief valve dumps the extra fuel directly back into the suction side of the pump, not back to the tank. So, it basically gets churned and hot like the water from a water-brake dynamometer, unlocked torque converter, etc., until it gets its turn to go down the line and either get burned or sent through the head to presumably pick up even more heat. I do wonder I shimmed the internal relief to a higher pressure and then installed a downstream external regulator back to the tank what the change in fuel temp would be since it would not get churned over and over.

thermostat help !!!
I would assume so, as we've discussed before. At the time I took out the 200F thermostat I figured going back to the 190F thermostat could only help lower the cylinder head temperature, and thus the return fuel as well. It sure wouldn't raise the temp, so I swapped to my 190F Super Stat that I love so much - just smooooth temp changes, up and down several degrees showing on my Adrenaline screen as I traverse the countryside.

thermostat help !!!
I ran one for a while (20-30k miles?), only took it out because I am one of those that suffers from Hot Fuel and didn't want to do anything stupid to my VP44 computer while searching for a little extra MPG. And yes, the heater does work VERY well with it!!!!

Truck Not Running Right
The sporadic nature leads me to first suspect electrical. Have you checked hacked and cleaned ALL grounds under the hood? Have you measured your alternator's A/C voltage? Need a digital voltmeter for this. W-T modification is suggested if it hasn't already been done. It's in the Articles section. I'm not familiar with what data an Edge Insight will give you. I use an OBDLink LX and it tells me a lot of live data handy for diagnostics.

Fuel Temp & Intake Air temps
I think those of us that have aftermarket fuel pumps where the fuel recycles through the pump versus going directly back to the tank are going to see higher fuel temps. Drawing from the same place as the fuel return doesn't help.

thermostat help !!!
Indeed, that's why when ordering rear brake parts for my 2001.5 I just search under the 2002 model year. I have rear disc brakes.

Hydro Boost
Pretty nice that kit is universal. I own three vehicles with Hydroboost, maybe I should order a kit to have handy, and hope the seals don't dry out by the time I need it 😄

The one on the right sure looks like it could flow more, and resembles the Motorad heavy duty unit on RockAuto. Designs do change over time, sometimes for the better.

Cummins front and rear shaft seals.
If you're referring to what I think you are, there is no machining involved. Like this? Sometimes called a Redi-Sleeve or Speedi-Sleeve.

thermostat help !!!
Below is a comment I made a while back. Before this thermostat I ran a 4th gen 200 ⁰F stat and had no issues, it's in the parts box should I want to use it again. "I run a Stant Super-Stat, 190F ($8 at Rock Auto). Part number 46289. Watching the ECT on the Adrenaline (not the dashboard gauge), it holds temps very steady, slow swing of just a few degrees when cruising down the interstate, regardless of winter or summer. RockAuto.com cab size question - extended cab vs quad cab for headliner
I would hazard a guess that you are correct. The best thing to do is find the ACME model number and confirm on their website.

Engine Oil Pan Gasket Replacement
I do enjoy a good, concise article. You mention a bottle jack, is there a safe way to lift the engine with that instead?

How hot are you?
I'll trade humidity levels for a few days! A dew point of 52.6 would very VERY welcome! Can't tell you the last time we had 59 for the low, I'm happy when it gets below 70. Went outside with a hammer and got condensation like a cold beer. Not sure how anyone survives in Louisiana or east Texas. Sweat only works when it can evaporate. It's been "nice" here for about a week, but I see we'll be back near 100 later this week, and still humid.

Fel Pro head gasket gave up in 4k miles
At $230 it darn sure ought to do better than a $50 gasket or I'd be furious.

Oil Pan Gasket Replacement Advice Request
Just as a fun fact, I looked up the NAPA oil pan gaskets. They sell a Fel-Pro and a Mahle. RockAuto sells those as well as a Victor-Reinz. The VR is Made in USA and is 0.060" thick. The Mahle is 0.030" thick, and didn't readily locate the Fel-Pro specs. The bolt hole count doesn't match up on V-R but I'd imagine that's a data-entry error. The DANA and VR webpage has it wrong and that's where RA gets their data. I don't know much about materials of construction or anything else.

Oil Pan Gasket Replacement Advice Request
Fantastic! I can do that in my driveway pretty easily, just need to go get my cherry picker from my old garage. I may wait until I'm closer to oil change time, though. It may be a while since I now commute in my TDI.

Oil Pan Gasket Replacement Advice Request
I'm guessing not enough room to completely remove the pan from under the truck, is that correct?

Oil Pan Gasket Replacement Advice Request
I thought the facility in (or near) Booneville, MO made gaskets, maybe it is (or was) rubber things. Two of my college roommates were interns there one summer 20 years ago; I really don't remember what they told me!

I guess I'll be saving this project for another time, to do all my things at once. Thanks for the insight.

Oil Pan Gasket Replacement Advice Request
After mentioning last week that my truck leaks like a sieve, that bugged me all weekend to the point I want to get it handled before "someday", but have some questions. Is it worth the time and effort to change the pan gasket knowing full well that my front seal needs to be changed, too? While best to do both at the same time, I'm sure, I'm also willing to do the pan twice if dropping the pan isn't a massive endeavor. Is dropping the pan a big endeavor? I've dropped some pans in my day, even changed out all the bearings from the bottom before - but never on an engine so tight to the cross member. (think a gas big block in a 3-ton truck) Regardless of whether I do it once or twice, is a there a consensus on brand? Mahle? Victor-Reinz? Whatever is cheapest among name brands? Unlike CAT, I don't believe Cummins makes gaskets so seems pointless to go "OEM" unless they have better specs when they order them. I plan to change the front crank seal when I have the front half of the truck basically disassembled to put in new A/C condenser, straighten the mounting tabs on my intercooler (PO deer damage), etc. All this work will get done at my dad's garage and coordinating with his schedule isn't easy. I can change the oil pan gasket either in my driveway or at work.

Removed chrome wheel covers and painted the wheels
If the wheels were actually chromed I could never bring myself to do it. But chrome covers, absolutely! My VW TDI's snow tire wheels got the black painted steel treatment, and I like it, though wish the chrome center caps weren't so expensive so I could bring myself to finish it. It doesn't look as good on a gold vehicle as it does on silver, but I wasn't about to buy a set of aluminum wheels for dedicated snow tires.

My rear end stinks
Glad you got it figured out, sucks you have a project like that instead of fishing/barbecuing/etc.

Removed chrome wheel covers and painted the wheels
I think it looks fantastic and may do the same to my set of steel wheels!
