2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Had an interesting phone conversation with the owner of TST products today about the so vp44 fuel pump. He was a Cummins employee and has worked on and has had access to testing the vp44 and prior fuel pumps. He said that the high pressure side of the internal vane pump produces around 300 psi at 2200 rpm engine speed, and that the actual injection is done by a piston that creates the high pressure pulse and also directs it to the correct injector. This piston not only pushes the fuel to the injector but also rotates or spins to line up with the correct injector port in the VP44. He said that many of the pump failures are attributed to the piston ceasing from lack of …

Hi Everyone, I drove my truck today for the first time in a few weeks and it seems like my engine idle noise is louder then it should be (see attached video). I know the Nv4500 makes more noise then the auto does in all driving conditions however it seems louder then I recall. The manual swap has roughly 800 miles on it and the video is after driving for 35mins. Does it sound like maybe I need to adjust the valves? Whats your thoughts or post similar videos. 01 Ram Walk-Around @ Idle - 10.16.16.mp4

  8. Is there a way to check if my fuel tap is working using a volt meter ? Truck is a 99

  9. hi y'all, I am about to check out a non-running 2001. Seller claims that vp44 is bad. It has a swapped 56 block together with a 5 speed with around 150k. I am wondering how would I be able to tell the health of the engine, as apparently test drive is not possible. Or, should this truck be absolutely avoided?

  10. Hey guys could use some input if you have the time. My 02 has a 1/2 inch braided line with a 90 elbow coming off of the ip going to the reservoir. I have an edge J/A but am having a hard time understanding how to make the banjo bolt or an equivalent work with the edge. I had a short and now I think my ECM is acting weird and my lift pump is intermitent when turned on and a different idle . Any help would be great..., thanks in advance.

Has anybody come up with a way to direct air at vp. When the fan is turning it pulls all the forced air to the right side of eng. I am thinking about some way to direct it on the pump. What yall think, waisting my time or what?I got it, cut a hole in your hood and put a vp scoop on it. I know most of yall are laughing but if you been through as many vps as some of us it is starting to sound pretty good.

  13. So I'm trying to figure out a previous problem where I suspect I fried my ecm. Long story short I did the wt wire mod on the truck, but didn't crimp a battery terminal right, and had a bad time. I sent the quadzilla module off, and they checked it out, and all is well with it. Truck is still throwing the same codes in the title, and with my janky Bosch scantool, I can see the map sensor still isn't reading, staying permanently stuck on 29.5hg. I tested all the wires, I'm getting good ground to the map sensor, and getting the 5 volts to it, but no signal on the wire. I have the ecm directly plugged into the map sensor (not through quadzilla) and the truck still shows…

  14. Pulling my motor, need to unhook the condensor so that I can come straight forward with my motor, minus the oil pan. Can't lay the condensor to the side because the bottom line is hard all the way past the air filter box, can't bend that stuff... So it needs to come off and to get it off I need to evacuate the r134 charge without freezing my skin, frostbite, maming myself, and etc... Any good methods?

  15. Maybe you've followed the VP44 diagnostics instructions over at blue chip... there's a point where one of the steps involves cutting the wire for pin 5. If you really need to do that experiment, don't cut your wire. Pull the terminal. I made a tool to extract terminals from a VP44 connector. It's just a bit of brass tubing. I put it in a drill and sanded it down until it was small enough to fit into the front of the connector. You need to move the little red tabs. This releases the lock that holds the terminals. But it's not the only lock. Insert the brass tube over the front of the terminal. It should go in about 1/4" or so. T…

  17. hello guys here is a question . anyone know if there is a way to identify a unknown 24 valve injector ? i have a 2002 dodge diesel as a insurance write off that i have been using for parts for my 2001 dodge diesel . the 2002 had a 4 inch exhaust , a hx40 / hx35 turbo ( hx35 exhaust side ) , a aftermarket airfilter ( i think it is a "afc" ) , some sort of "tuner box" ( it is missing , but the vp44 does have the top cover replaced with one with a "wiretap " ) ...... there was also a boost guage and a egt guage in the truck . ...... there is also a " PDR Diesel " emblem on the tailgate .... ( i emailed them with the trucks serial number , no response so far ) . the tr…

  19. Started by CudaDude,

Finally got around to changing the fuel filter this morning and now truck won't start. Followed this procedure. http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/filter/00fuel_filter.htm, but I didn't fill the filter housing with fuel when I put the new filter in, instead I've bumped the starter several times to let the lift pump push air out of the system. I did have the filter out for an extended amount of time while I cleaned the filter cap. Don't know if that allowed an abnormal amount of air in the system. I tried bleeding air from the schrader valve on the VP44 and got a little air at first but now it's a steady stream of fuel, but still no start. Guess the n…
