2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

    So long story short truck has a nv4500 swap from an 01 with an 02 motor that had the auto. Truck is extremely gutless until around 2000 rpms. Once you hit that it’s a completely different truck. Has an air dog that keeps 18psi fuel pressure. Have cleaned both iat and map. Can free rev all day but once you put a load in it there is a very noticeable lack of power. Checked codes and only codes I am getting are for the auto trans.

  2. I bought the truck 3 years ago and never noticed the WTS light didnt work but it still started and worked fine. I rebuilt the top end last summer and after that the WTS light started working normally. About a month ago I realized the starter was going bad because it would just click but if I tried it once or twice again it would start, a few weeks later I was planning on going on a camping trip so I swapped the starter for a new one, I disconnected the batteries when doing so but at the end I tightened the top bolt last and then hooked up the batteries, I recall hooking up the batteries then making sure the bottom bolts were tight and arking the wrench on the positive t…

    Please Help!! I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500. It has a 5.9 Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. The problem occurs when engine is cold. I thought it was only in winter like now. But it also happens in summer just not half as bad. when engine is first started cold I get white smoke out of exhaust and it stumbles for about a minute in summer. And if left unplugged (engine block heater) in winter it will smoke bad and stumble for like 5minutes!! Then when it warms up enough to drive it wont go above like 20 30 maybe 40mph for like 2miles or more. Seems like until engine reaches a certain temp.??     This thread is where I will post updates of my modifications, issues i've had, and potential upgrades I'm considering. This page is dedicated to @TFaoro, because without him my truck would be bone stock still.... To start off, today my VP died. It took me by surprise, as it gave no indication there was an issue. But, it threw Death Code P1691, and that's that. Good thing it died before I bought tires. Is DAP everyone's first choice for a new VP?

    I started the truck up this morning, no issues. Let it warm up for about 20mins before driving. Drove it about 10 mins to the babysitters an shut it down. Went to leave, an it won't start now! Cranks over good but doesn’t fire. What could it be??

    Hey fellas new here. I’ve got a 2000 24valve vp truck and the trans has been rebuilt. Receipt says reman billet converter. From time to time I have lock/unlock issues pretty sure it’s the alternator wire. Problem now is the truck is easing into lockup, shuttering, rpms just fluctuating at lockup. But it only does it under moderate to heavy throttle but converter locks up fine under full throttle. Doesn’t matter if comp box is off or on level 5. So is this converter issues, valve body issues, voltage problem or what?

    99 dodge ram 2500 turbo diesel. 5.9 24v. I am curious if this is a head gasket or freeze plug leak. its leaking coolant from back of block. tech reckons plug. That corrosion however looks ominous. Ive been quoted $2600 to repair with removing head etc. the pics are from below. As a complete novice can i drive the truck to another shop for a 2nd estimate.

    Hi, Excuse me to disturb you, I have a dodge ram 98.5 cummins 24v with 4wd, and I would like to remove definityvely the light on instrument panel ( not the bulb) , but I would like to remove all abs wire which go to the dash board and cause the lights on . I have changed all wheels speed sensors, and I think its now the abs module. SO As I have no money to change it I would like to remove. I imagine there is a wire behind the instrument cluster which arrive to signal a problem with abs , so I would like to cut it to finish with this. Thank you for your help.

    I have a 2002 dodge 3500 5 speed, i will list the mods below. After installing these mods last weekend I have noticed my truck sounds like a 6.0 powerstroke at high rpm it makes a popping sound almost like a back fire.     Had some weird things going on coming back from Atlanta last night. Stuck in slooow traffic thru down town the engine jumped in idle to a bit over 1000 rpm. It also started surging about 250 more rpm up down in an even pattern for about 10 seconds. Did it it again 3 or 4 times getting thru town. The temp gauge dropped out also. Matter of fact it would only do it while the temp was out. Not sure how they are related. This happened a few more times on the rest of the trip except very little surging but had the elevated idle.     So as long as I remember my truck has always done this, but I noticed this week when it starts to do it. And I'm curious if this is normal for everyone else. Start my truck in the morning and I jump on the freeway. The truck is still pretty cold, so I take it easy getting up to speed. As we all know, these truck rattle like crazy, but everyday, i hit a certain point driving into town where my trucks normal sound get quiet.   15. I had the stealership replace my tappet cover gasket (I know, bad idea but time is money) and now its surging/ having delayed fueling when stepping on the gas. Also feels like it wants to die when releasing the clutch from a stop. What do you think they messed up for me to be having these issues? Im thinking timing from removing the injection pump. I'm bringing it back but I want to be prepared for whatever excuse they'll spin me. Thanks

    I'm getting payed pretty good to build a dump truck. My truck runs prett toasty pulling grades when heavy. Empty wich it is 99% of the time fine. Running smarty on 9 3 3 7x09 smoky doesnt matter where smarty is set.. Was thinking head studs turbo and 3peice bd manifold in one wack. 7x10 injectors later. What gateless turbos are available? I've looked alittle and see delete plates but no turbos built gateless. My turbo hy35 is making a fluttering sound lately that's a new sound. Might be rubbing the wheel.     Anyone ever removed the inner sections of the motor mount? I'm going to be replacing them with the poly inserts from Genos or from polybushings.com I have engine out and mounts off of engine. I assume they are just pressed in, and I need to press out?

    I bought a 2002 cummins recently. There is a wiring harness that runs under the fan shroud. The fan shroud is broken and the wiring harness got cut in half by the fan. I am trying to splice the wires back together but there are about 5 wires that have an exact duplicate color so I am not sure how to differentiate them to get them spliced correctly. Can anyone help me with any info on splicing them back together?

    Friday I serviced the transmission, including taking out the valve body to replace plastic accumulator piston with metal one, (manual valve?) to allow flow to torque converter while in Park. I have noticed the last couple of days that the truck - even when warm after 30 mile drive - idles higher than normal, around 1250 versus 800ish RPM. This is in park or neutral. The tach isn't wonky, I only looked at the tach because it sounded fast. Idle while in drive seems normal. I have checked the transmission fluid after 30 mile drive home on interstate, truck in neutral on level ground and it's in the middle of the hatch mark, same as the last 30k miles.
