Seems weird to order tires and have them shipped to the installer. Don't they resent that they did not make any money on the tires? All they get is the mount/ balance fees for tires you bought elsewhere. Anyone had bad experience with that?

i have done this several times, typically in remote area...after speaking with the shops owner.

 

other times, i purchase and find an inexpensive installer. i have had no issues as of yet.

 

wifes suburban needs tires and getting ready to it again when she returns from her little road trip.

Just started to do this in the UK maybe 3 or 4 years, my best guess is either the installer gets a sum afterwards as like commission or they make enough on the fitting as don't forget they haven't had to shell out for stock sitting for months..... might work for them as tyres have a shelf life which I didn't know until I got new this weekend

 

I didn't do this as I found a good 4x4/custom/large tyre backstreet shop just 10 miles away and the owner has American vehicles so no need to deal with the mainstream

Fine out how much they are going to charge to mount and balance.   Some of the shops I use charge $10 no receipt and others $25 plus State waste fee, plus a disposal fee, and any other BS fee they can think of.  

 

When you get the tires be sure to check the production date on the side wall.  You don't want a tire that's already a year old.   It will look something like this (2119),  21 is the 21st week of the year 2019. 

Thank you guys for the thoughts. Sometimes feeling a bit husseled over prices paid, I like this idea of seeing all the prices brands and reviews listed on one website..... its cool. Dealers are always saying, ''oh we don't have that brand'' like they don't want you to be able to compare.

There is a small shop here in Nampa called 208Tire.com  They sell name brand and off brand tires without the overhead of the large stores.  They don't do installs though, just sell the tires.  They have a small local shop they send customers to for installation.  I guess the customers get a discount for all the business sent there way from the 208 guys. 

Warranty and road hazard may be an issue with mail order tires, and maybe it won't. Best to do some research on that. 

 

I'm also getting new tires this fall. Cooper AT3 XLT's in 275/70R18. I've talked with 208 Tire and Commercial Tire, but haven't made up my mind yet. Notes are at home, but the prices were very similar.

I will be interested in the price. I pay about 22 bucks per tire for DT free replacement. I have probaly broken even on it thru the years and they once gave me the replacement without me bringing the tire back from Iowa. Just took my word for it. New tire or old, they always replaced it.

 

Good advice dripley about the warranty. Wonder why I didn't think of that . Something to watch out for on mail orders right there.

 

So me and you and Mopar Man gettin' retired this fall. Too bad we can't do a group buy and get a deal. I'm going with the 245's this time around.

March of 2021 for me. Though today would be just as good for me. Its time to go home and take care me and my own. 40 years on the road have taken there toll.

I hear ya very clear on that. I can't retire... I like the money and the hours if I can ever get this house done. Too much keeping all the people happy going right now. I want it back like before.... working a few 4-6 hr days a week. I love it that way, keeps me hangin in there.

Now I could deal with that but these jobs dont allow it. Like yoday I look at what the framer did while I was gone and he chose to deviate from the drawings and we spent all day long back tracking. Deviations without approval opens a whole new can of worms. Cant seem to make them understand that. This is my 6th week of framing and 5th different framing foreman. Its total bullchit.

I had decent luck with discount tire, plus they been opening stores all over the place. They have 2 websites, one for store and one for wholesale.

Here, yes. After explaining to one just to have different one and have to go back square one again gets old. And they each blame the other with me having to fix the issue.

Here in oregon I'm getting kicked around with higher prices. Took almost year dealing with bank, tittle company, Architect, county permits, power company, weather and other delays before job really got rolling. Electricians tried to almost double the price. Of course I refused..... Couldn't believe it.... others bad enough. Anyhow I got them back in the ballpark

 

It's a lot harder to put together a home today than it was in 04.

 

Sorry to get off topic Tires are more important..... I think I'm going with a set of Goodyear wranglers. The ones without aggressive tread.

I have used Tire Rack several times now. (4 sets of tires for the 'other vehicles). We found a shop up in Bend that matches Tire Rack's prices and we get a small break in mounting and balancing when we order through their shop.  But the same shop have also happily mounted and balanced tires purchased directly through Tire Rack and had delivered to them.

 

Tire Rack has provided very fast service and delivery - they get a definite Four Thumbs up from us...

So here is what I am looking at. 

 

208 Tire is cheaper, but they don't come with a road hazard warranty. By the time I add in the 3rd party road hazard they offer the cost is the same, maybe even a little cheaper at Commercial Tire. 

 

I'd really like to do business with 208 tire, but not sure it's worth the hassle of their 3rd party road hazard. 

 

Anyone ever dealt with 3rd party road hazard before?

 

I've used the road hazard warranty on most sets of tires I've owned on my pickup. Elk hunting where I do is hard on tires. 

Typically I just head over to Ontario, OR for tires. Save on the sales taxes in Oregon. Then I've dealt with Tire Factory (formerly Big O Tires) for years. Michael the owner has always done good deals on tires. Most likely go back there as well again. 

 

I've also got a friend in Riggins, (Steve Crump) he's been know to get me killer deals on tires as well. 

Good thinking. For 6% I’ll probably go to Commercial Tire in Ontario
