2001 dodge auto tranny problems
Someone help me out on this one... Does the 01 fall into the same category as 02 as far as with O/D on (ie; no backlit O/D on dash) the trans will lock up in 3rd, then shift to 4th, then lockup again in 4th? If so then I think it sounds fairly normal, other then the broken spring obviously. Mine will shift pretty harshly if I leave it like stated above and am sorta putting around. Even more so when cold, but it's only when shifting from locked 3rd to unlocked 4th then back to locked 4th really quickly, and this only happens when accelerating slowly through those speeds regimes. Unless I'm on it pretty good, like 1800rpm and above, the shift from locked 3rd to unlocked 4th to 4th locked will smooth out quite a bit. My trans is 100% stock (......one day dynamic tuned ) and that's how mine shifts. Now, that's not to say that's normal either, but I haven't really seen it do anything to cause any concern from my end.

Code Reader
I'd just get a cheap-o android tablet or phone just to use with the OBD so you always have something in the vehicle to scan codes with, and if it 'went missing' it wouldn't be a huge blow to the wallet.

Longer cranking...
Here's the link I was referring too in my last post. Keep in mind this is only going to matter if you're running a drawstraw 5 and modded fuel basket.
-
Longer cranking...
No not the final fix to the longer cranking. This did fix the erratic and random fuel pressure. I'm pretty sure I identified the problem in another thread, but I haven't had the time to drop the tank and run new hose yet so I'm not 100% sure if it's the fix. I'll try and find the thread and link it.

White smoke
Ah ok, easy enough. I just checked it again but before I saw this video, it looks like I have constant power at the relays that are closest to the fender. I think the grids stop cycling before I could check the inner most ones. Does that sound right? Constant power on the outside relays then switch power to the inner posts to transfer power to the grid heater itself?
-
White smoke
Yes only when they turned on, not constant. How exactly do I do a continuity check?
-
White smoke
Alright guys so it looks like I may be having grid heater issues which may have been causing my smoke issues. Finally got around to getting a test light under the hood when the grid heater was running. It was clearly cycling, I could hear them cycling and test light showed power at both relays (closest to fender) and continuing up to the heater feed terminals and I only have power at one terminal, the one closest to the motor. Does this indicate a bad grid heater or a bad fused wire that's between the relays and the heater terminals?

Snap On tools are the best
First time on a Snap-on truck!?!? Man I remember going on the Snap-on truck as a kid at my dads shop. It wasn't until I got older that I realized how much they were!! It really is a night and day difference using Snap-on compared to cheaper alternatives. The only problem is the They have a lot of Cummins specific tools like you mentioned Jag. I'll probably end up dropping the dough on their injector tools just because I'm a bit anal retentive and that'll be my justification to get more tools! Hahaha

Teardown and Rebuild
What does the industrial cover come off of, or where would you even find one?

White smoke
I can't remember if I tried this in 3cyl mode but it was just a thought and I don't think it really affected anything in my case. Mine seemed to be strictly temperate dependent and more then likely condensation as it just smelled like normal exhaust, without any awkward smells or eye burning white smoke. I'm going to check through my grids to see if they're working. Can I do all that with just a good voltmeter? Or do I need something else? Actually this morning I seem to have a blueish haze/light smoke coming from the exhaust with ambient temps around 45 degrees, not being plugged in, and not using the MPG fooler. What does a bluish haze while cold mean? Only happened while idling and maybe until I made it to the end of the street then it was gone.

White smoke
Wanted to follow up this topic and get your guys thoughts on a couple things. I've been noticing a few threads regarding this similar topic and was curious about one potential issue of white smoke being off timing. Could colder starts with the mpg fooler in 3 or 6 cylinder mode change timing enough to cause it to smoke? I wouldn't think so but figured it's worth asking for clarification. BTW my white smoke has pretty much gone away. With the temps warming back up I haven't really seen any white/black smoke except for a second or two at start up. Never comes up any other time.

Fuel sumps are illgeal
I believe the main concern here is if in a wreck what's going to happen. Obviously you have fail safes to shut off fuel via lift pump power and what not. So I'm a wreck with no power to the lift pump, if a line broke coming from a sump, there's nothing from stopping that fuel from flowing and doing its job of 'gravity feed' to wherever that line broke. With a drawstraw, if any line gets broken, sure it'll drain whatever fuel was in those lines but once it's out there's not more fuel coming out since it's being pulled from the top of the tank.

Steering
And just to clarify, you only replaced the steering box with the one from blue top? Do you have a steering box brace, track bar, after market steering links? Just curious so I can get an idea of how mine might react to putting in a new box.

Teardown and Rebuild
Is there anything special about that valve cover? Or just that it says 'cummins 24valve'
-
Steering
Same here. Glad you have something working well but I'd be interested to hear if it's still the same down the road a bit. I've been dealing with sloppy steering as well but I've gotten used to it, but the day I get tired of it, it'd be nice to know which company to turn too. <- (pun intended)

Is 2 micron small enough to pass thru fuel system
I'm sure either diesel or oil would be fine, as long as it's lubricated. Weird that it failed but if it wasn't properly sealing then maybe that's why.

Is 2 micron small enough to pass thru fuel system
Was a little bit of oil put on the o-ring prior to install?

Shirts?
Yea I agree with Nick. I think more people would end up purchasing then are actively participating in this thread. People always want shirts of things they're in too!
-
Shirts?
I'd be in for 2 XL tee shirts I dont think it needs to be a huge graphic to be a good design. Just something nice and simple with like truck and website IMO.
-
Shirts?
I've been wanting a shirt since I joined! Let's do it!!

Steering
I have basically all the same mods as you and still running a stock steering box. I have some slop here and there steering down a straight road that I can only imagine is the steering box. I'd be interested to hear how it steers once you get it rebuilt or replaced with another box.

Help with short Questions...
JAG it's funny you mention that. I was just talking with my dad about selling my second cummins as its just sitting majority of the time and not being used, might as well go to someone who could use it. Well, in its downtime it's developed some 'issues' that I could just not mention and sell. They're not noticeable and could easily just be 'forgotten' by me. I just have a time sleeping at night knowing I did that to someone. So, I'll fix everything up before selling because I just feel like that's the right thing to do. Sad that that seems to becoming less and less of a priority for people these days.

Help with short Questions...
If the crossed out items weren't actually issues, you'd be looking at an 8 grand truck. With those issues they'd have to pay me to take it. The amount of time and money, as you stated, is not worth it.

My addiction
Awesome pic! What's the wheel/tire combo you're using here?

Pets and bitter cold
Booties are probably your best bet. We have a golden retriever and he loves the cold so we really haven't had any issues in that regard. The wife and I were just talking about a similar issue. She wanted me to make it "extra warm" in the back of her truck so the dog would be warm on our road trip home. Mind you, this is with a Snugtop topper, carpet lined top, and bed rug with his bed back there. He's going to be riding in luxury! hahah Now I just need to convince the boss.
