1998.5 UP Speedo calibration and service manual tire size selection confusion?
Wow! That looks awesome! Would this work for trucks that didn't come with the digital overhead? btw sorry to hear about your boss and job situation, hope it all works out for you!

Tanks straps on fuel tank
I'd say more then likely they left the strap a little loose, or it wasn't properly aligned in the grooves in the tank. Also, if the straps aren't already ground down on the edges, I'd highly recommend doing it for the side of the strap that goes into the same bolt the carrier bearing uses. It makes it so you don't have to completely take that apart to remove/install it. I did mine like this

Quadzilla Adrenaline V2 Testing
Damn! Looks like nice! I assume you can use each slider to set the tune exactly how you want? and If worse comes to worse you can always use it as a back up DJ sound mixer! I kid I kid!

Cummins additives
I fill up on base which I know goes through a TON of diesel. Our local shell diesel pump isn't even a newer updated pump and I always feel like it's not up to par. If there was a Chevron closer, I'd use them exclusively, no questions asked. That's the problem living in a smaller town like mine. How do you typically find out what kind of diesel is being used? Do you have to ask the individual places or can you go online for the bigger chain places?

So I got word back that my local fill up spot doesn't use winter blend diesel so I'll probabaly run down to Wally World and pick up some anti-gel just as a safe guard for my trip home. Don't plan on using it regularly but I'd rather be safe then sorry.

Wow don't know how I missed this thread! Definitely would like to see the finished project!

Im working on getting the fuel specs for where I'm at. Only reason I'm backing off of using optilube is because they have cetane booster is every different blend.

That's good to hear. I'm not entirely sure if I'm getting winter blend fuel or not as I buy on base, but just so happens my cousins the guy who buys the fuel for base so I'll ask him.

Trailer load distribuition
Alright thanks guys, I know it's not a huge amount of weight so I figured if anything it would just be more annoying then anything but with winter weather around, I'd rather avoid any unnecessary risks. The trailer is mine and practically brand new so everything maintenance wise should be A-ok. I don't have a tongue weight scale so I'll more or less be eye balling it. I'll plan on putting it just forward of the axle to keep the majority of the weight there. I'll be towing it with the wifes 2014 GMC Sierra so it won't exceed the tongue weight for the hitch and it uses a 2in ball so should be fine there as well. I just didn't want the thing to ride like a pissed off bull back there for 1000 miles!

Fuel return line
Oopps I got my numbers mixed up, but yes, long bed 34g tank. Meant that showing a 1/4 tank I would've expected to add about 25.5g and instead added 27.2g so instead of a 1/4 tank meaning I'm at 8.5g I was approximately 5.5g remaining with 1/4 indicated. I agree, certain debris is unavoidable. I'm still running my fuel module with the screen installed in the bottom. Hopefully my FASS is doing it's job! Typically my gauge is pegged over full until right around 100 miles on the trip meter, then it starts to fall. Either way, my MPGs and bad! lol

Well it never gets into the negatives around here. I'm just assuming it'll be no colder then the 20s while I'm gone as that's typically the coldest we see in these parts. I figure when driving daily, it helps combat gelling by warming things up at least a couple times a day and keep things stirred up, but just sitting for 2-3 weeks is what has me worried a little. Does 2stroke offer any sort of 'anti-gel?' I might just get a bottle of opti-lube XPD as it states it's good against gelling down to -10-15* and I've been wanting to try that out as an alternative to 2stroke and the opti-lube summer blend I got. Thanks for the input fellas

Trailer load distribuition
Ok guys, try not to laugh to much, but when it comes to weight distribution on trailers, I'm a noob. Even more embarrassing is I'm only hauling a sander in a crate a little over 300lbs on a 5x8 utility trailer. Single axle trailer that weights around 600lbs. I'm just curious as to where I should try and place the sander on the trailer to make sure it rides the best for the 1000 mile road trip I'll be making next week. My thoughts so far were to have it centered (duh!) on the trailer and slightly more forward of the axle that way a bigger majority of the weight would be on the tounge of the trailer/truck and not the back of the trailer. Is this right? Anything else to consider or do? Thanks in advance!

Cummins additives
Hey guys, getting ready to see family for the Holidays so my truck will be sitting for around 2-3 weeks and weather has been a little cold getting into the low 30s high 20s. Just wondering if you guys think I should put any anti-gel or something else in the fuel while I'm gone since it will be sitting for so long in lower temps?

Fuel return line
Just wanted to make note of this... Tank was down to about a 1/4 and that's about as low as I like to run it so I figured I'd fill up on my way to work this morning. I noticed that my fuel pump didn't prime like it will usually do when the tank is more full. Also, my fuel pressure was moving more then normal, sometimes randomly independent of throttle input. It's either one of two things. 1. Fuels sloshing around out of my fuel basket and causing pressures to vary slightly more then normal. They never dropped below 16-17 so it doesn't seem like it's sucking air, otherwise I feel I'd see a much bigger drop in pressure. 2. Fuels sloshing around enough to cover up the OEM fuel return line causing a pressure difference in the system which in turn is causing my fuel pressure to vary more then normal. Either way, staying above a 1/4 tank isn't a problem for me as I'd prefer that anyways to avoid sucking up any bad stuff. The truck still starts fine on level ground and other then the pressure fluctuation, it's still within safe numbers. My fuel gauge is definitely off as I filled up at 1/4 tank today and was able to put a little over 27 gallons in the tank. At a 1/4 tank I should technically have 10 gallons remaining, when in fact I only had 7ish.

White smoke
Alright well went out to start the truck up this morning. It was around 35* and I started it up in 6cyl mode. It definitely let the grids run longer! lol Cranked it up (other then my longer then normal crank times more then likely due to my short OEM return line in my fuel module) it started up fine (although it did seem to crank slower then normal so I think my batteries may officially be on the way out ) Anyways, to keep things on topic, it started, there was no smoke. I waited for a little bit, and just before rpms started to go up to 1200rpm, smoke started coming out. I went back to smell and honestly it just smelled like exhaust to me. Not an overwhelming fuel smell, didn't burn the eyes, so that leads me to believe its just condensation build up in the exhaust pipe that's burning off. Would make sense since it doesn't start right away, then once temp builds a bit, it eventually burns off.

White smoke
I mean I wouldn't be surprised if the stock injectors were on there way out being at 175k. I'm sort of leaning towards it being water and just steaming. That would explain the random-ness of this all because it's started on other cold mornings without smoking. I didn't know starting with the switch in 3cyl would get the grids hotter, I'll try that. Is that the same for 6cyl as well?
-
White smoke
Stockers. I do the have high idle switch hooked up. This particular morning I had it plugged it, started it with the switch in the off position to use the grids if it still needed it, once started I flipped over to 6cyl high idle. I noticed it just before it started climbing to 1200rpms. Once it got there it lasted maybe 20secs? Then went away. I'll see what it does tomorrow, but I don't have to go into work until later so it'll be a little warmer.

White smoke
Yea truck runs fine, I'm not too worried about to be honest. I just couldn't remember what color smoke meant what, and when I saw a certain color if it was something to be concerned about or not.
-
White smoke
Next time it does it I'll get back there and see what it smells like. Coolant levels were normal last I checked. Are you saying it could smell like coolant?

Bought Me a First Gen
Those are some nice numbers, especially for stock injectors! Looking forward to where this is going.

White smoke
So I've been noticing that here and there my truck will put out a good amount of white smoke when starting up cold. This morning it did it for maybe a minute, tops, but went away after that. The truck had sat since Friday through some 30ish degree weather and I plugged it in on a timer so it'd be on a few hours this morning. Also used grid heaters and still had smoke. It doesn't do this any other time through out the day, but it also doesn't do it on every cold start in the morning so sort of weird and inconsistent. What do you think? Anything to worry about or sound normal?

Ya got that right for sure! I'm keeping an eye on the weather over the pass so we'll see how things turn out!

Yea except you're in California! I lived in CA for 22years and don't plan on living there again. Although majority of my family still lives in the state. I'll actually be in Redding in exactly a week, pending weather coming over the Siskiyou's.

It was only a little sketchy getting out of the driveway and up my street. Once on busier roads it was pretty clear and easy going. Craziest part is the weather app was only saying it was 36* out but I see snow fall out of my window! Haha

Things got a little chilly and SNOWY around these parts! Being that we're surround by water, snow is pretty rare around these parts so it was exciting to look out the front window last night to see it falling! Even more surprised to wake up to things still covered!
