  1. Twas a nasty, raw, windy, rainy day yesterday, so I didn't work. I was reading posts on other forums (sorry) about tires, and found out that Cooper has a $75 rebate with the purchase of 4 tires until Nov. 7, 2011.So what do I do??? I go to the tire place/Cooper dealer where I bought my ATR's 3.5 years ago and order a set of Discoverer AT3's. They didn't have them at the warehouse, so they had to order them and they won't be here until later next week. So I'll have new tires on Mighty Whitey late next week. $990.00 out the door, but I do get the $75 rebate in the form of a prepaid VisaCard. It is what it is.My ATR's have about 5/16's of tread left. They're riding real "hard" right now. Not what you want for winter driving. I figure now is as good a time as any to replace them. They've been real good to me. I would've gone a bit longer, but I couldn't pass up the rebate on the tires.
  2. I was looking to refer to something else, but I saw this, and had to respond. To do 80 in my truck in cold weather; I was never near 18-20psi boost to maintain that speed unless going into a strong headwind. I think I've posted about this before, but here goes again..............several years ago, I had to finish pulling a trailer back from TX from a hunting trip. This was a 26'? car hauler trailer that had 3 ATV's in it plus 5 guys hunting stuff. Not a "weighty" load, but when you consider the 30-35mph sustained North winds in -0 and lower temps, Mighty Whitey was going into, it was a load. In order to pull that trailer, and my truck with 5 guys and 3 dogs in it...........Mighty Whitey was at 20psi boost and 1000* EGT just to maintain 60mph. When I got the all-time high mileage on my truck last year; to maintain 65mph, I was only at 2-3psi of boost. But it was upper 90's- low 100's temperature wise. But even in 50* weather, to maintain 65mph in my truck ususally only requires 4-6psi boost if I'm not bucking a wind or towing. Original question...... Do you think a manifold and turbo blanket would do anything for the stocker turbo set-up??? Where did you purchase yours from??? Later.
  3. Geez, It's like I was watching a hunting program..............with the shameless pimping of certain products!!!!!!:2cents:Not arguing, just saying.
  4. IIRC, none of the gears are "keyed", so a "BIG" press is needed. Especially moreso because the NV5600 is a true "truck" tranny. That's why it's so heavy.................400+lbs. That's all I have to say on it.
  5. Mighty Whitey rolled over 154,000 on the way back from North Dakota yesterday. Four tanks of fuel on the trip. 17.7mph on tank one. 15.6mpg on tank two; a 30-40mph South wind hitting me broadside towing a trailer. 17.4mpg on tank three. And I still have 1/4 tank left on tank 4 as I'm typing this at home now!!
  6. Isn't this also a "round-a-bout" way to check the condition of the pistons rings and valve seats??? Afterall, that's the area the "air" is supposed to go anyway!!!
  7. This is what happens when congress over steps its authority and doesn't follow the constitution: and "we the people" do nothing about it. This is what also happens when congress cedes its authority to an agency, where people/voters don't have any recourse to change the people running it or the crap the people running it enact. BIG GOVERNMENT RUN AMUCK!!!!! "I'm from the government...........I'm here to help you.":duh::spend:
  8. I the reason to the multiple events is to lower peak combustion chamber pressures and temperatures for emission purposes. With a single event, you get a huge spike in temp and pressure. If you graph it out it essentially looks like the letter A without the cross part. The area under the "A" being total power. With multiple events, the peak pressures and temps are lower, the the graph would essentially look like the upper half of a circle. The top part of being lower than the top of the "A" on the single event graph. However, the area under the circle is greater than the A, so more power was produced. That's how it was "splained" to me in a nutshell.I'll see if I can find that somewhere.
  9. A Male Fairy Tale: Once upon a time, a Prince asked a beautiful Princess, “Will you marry me?” The Princess said, “No!!!” And the Prince lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and banged skinny long-legged big-titted broads and hunted and fished and raced cars and went to naked bars and dated women half his age and drank whiskey, beer and Captain Morgan and never heard bitching and never paid child support or alimony and banged cheerleaders and kept his house and guns and ate spam and potato chips and beans and blew enormous farts and never got cheated on while he was at work and all his friends and family thought he was frikin cool as hell and he had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up. The end.
  10. Now that you say that, IIRC, it was Marco (Smarty) that was able to eliminate the 3rd event in some beta tests, but did nothing to the 1st or 2nd event, but it had huge effects on performance...........HP and Torque. It makes sense that if you eliminate the 3rd totally and rearrange the parameters of the 1st and 2nd events it would increase mileage. Which is exactly why the '03 and early '04's tend to get better mileage and "less black oil"!!!!!
  11. I've read in numerous forums that the "3" injections events do not occur all the time. I don't remember when or where it shuts down though................whether at speed, or idle. I just don't recallI wonder how shuting down the 3rd event will work with the 04.5-07 piston design. Didn't they go to that design for the 3rd injection event to help with the emissions???
  12. IIRC, Ford used this design in the 80's or early 90's. Didn't work very well then either!!!! Don't know what made Star think they could reinvent a broken wheel!!!!
  13. My guess now that it's working is that this episode got the innerds a bit warm/hot. The 2.5 hours let it all cool down. DMF=Dual Mass Flywheel. Not a very good design.
  14. Red, White and Blue???!!!
  15. It's very possible he FUBARed the DMF or something else in the G56 tranny. AH64ID should be along shortly.
  16. I would've given her a "soot job" otherwise known as a BBCOS (beautiful black cloud of smoke) while she was on her "soap box" in my personal space!!!!
  17. I don't doubt anything you type.............I was just saying, not arguing!!!! Of the 70,000+ miles on these tires, I would guestimate, that they have 8-10,000 miles on gravel and/or dirt roads. Much of those miles are with a trailer of some sort in tow. Not a big, heavy trailer like yours, but a trailer still!!!!
  18. x2 on what AH64ID said about the clutch!!! The noise you're hearing is the DMF heading south. Upgrade to the SouthBend SMF(solid flywheel) and Con OFE clutch. You can use the OEM hydraulics with this clutch also. I've got over 80,000 miles on my Con OFE and it still is as good as new the way she grabs!!!!:thumb1:As far as the front end goes............If you want hub lock outs, there's a lot of good kits out there. I like not having to get out and lock hubs for 4wd though. Ball joints etc...............get greaseables whatever brand you get. I grease mine about every 5,000 miles. Just a few pumps until I see grease being expelled from what I'm greasing.I've got greaseable front axle U-joints, upper+lower ball joints, tie rods ends, and the U-joints on the rear driveshaft. Haven't had to replace anything on the front driveshaft yet!!!:spend:Any rubber bushing you need to replace...............replace it with a quality urethane one!!
  19. Guys, I drive as much, if not moreso than anyone around me on gravel and dirt and horse manure etc. Trying to maneuver my work trailer close to the barns I work at can be a chore..........especially in winter. Plus my year trips to North Dakota and SE Missouri........almost all gravel off the main roads. Not to mention the areas around here that I dog train in. Many of those training areas are farm fields and I'm driving down gravel and dirt lanes...........a lot!!I've never had a problem with any brand of tire as far a mileage goes except for Goodyears. They suck IMHO!!!! Maybe it's the Grandpa style of driving I do though!!!!!
  20. I know this is a normal happening for Cajflynn; but it seems like yesterday that I rolled over 150,000 on my truck. I'm now at almost 151,300 on Mighty Whitey. Got a few trips here coming up, so the miles will add up fast in the near future. Just saying, not arguing!!
  21. Yeah, the loin area over the kidney area onto the rump of this cow there was close to 2" of back fat there!!!! Heck, the heart.......yeah, I eat the heart also............had fat on it once I trimmed the pericardium off. Not to mention the rest of the KPH (kidney, pelvic, & heart) fat inside the body cavity!! She probably would've died of congestive heart failure if I hadn't shot her!!!:lmao2:Anyhow, my new 7 cubic foot freezer is about 2/3 full. Mostly elk and some geese.
  22. Hahahahaha:lmao: And don't forget, he "pays" for it also!!!!! --- Update to the previous post... I've found just the opposite when comparing wild to farm animals. Farm animals, whether it be cattle, hogs, turkeys, etc., are specifically bred to grow the maximum amount of muscle in the shortest amount of time on the least amount of food. Domesticated critters normally have a great fat content than wild critters, but they also have much more muscle. Often they, have less thick hides, less hair on the hide, no massive antlers. The only thing that would affect this in the negative is if they have a very high fat content on the carcass. Wild critters generally have more/thicker hair, often thicker hides, head gear/antlers, more guts to total body weight and less fat. I worked in several slaughter houses. The "neatly trimmed" packaged meat percentage from live weight was just under 40% for cattle. Remember this though...........they have the means, tools and manpower to get every scrap of meat off the carcass and use it in.........whatever. The average "Joe Smoe" hunter (especially some that I've seen) do a ____ job of butchering their critters. They leave so much on the carcass it should be a crime.......wanton waste IMHO!!! Then they take the "parts" to a processor to butcher it for them and make burger etc. How much is Mr. Processor trimming away???? That's why I said, that 30% of live weight into the freezer is good. Sorry I came off sounding harsh!! Later!!
  23. Live weight appox. 550-600lbs. Field dressing weight.........subtract about 25-30% of body weight Carcass weight............minus hide and head, subtract another 15-20% of body weight Trimmed packaged meat..........minus all bones and extra fat, subtract another 15-20% body weight With all due respect AH64ID, if your bull weighed 375lbs. hanging, he wasn't "that big" of a bull elk. Nice, but not big. You forget that I've got a BS degree in Agriculture with major in Animal Science.............I know critters. I used to judge farm animals for market, and I work with horses daily. I'm a pretty fair judge of size...........on critters!!!! You're doing real good to get 30% of live weight into the freezer of any critter.......fact!!!
