Rust proofing/weather protection
This kinda stated in a different thread but I thought I would post what I've done here instead of hijacking. There was a discussion about rust proofing and weather protection including the use of undercoating, fluid film and the old fashioned used oil concoction to combat rust and corrosion. Since I've been off work for a bit due to a knee problem I have been getting antsy and needed to get outside and tinker with something so I decided to try the used oil truck that was mentioned by @Mopar1973Man in another thread. I have plenty of used motor oil here on the farm (approx 35 gallons of it) so I mixed some with diesel to thin it out enough to be sprayed through a regular old garden sprayer. The type with a hand pump and hose with a wand. The mix worked out to be around 50/50 I believe. The diesel I used was off road diesel and seemed a bit thicker than road but maybe I imagined that, not sure. Anyway, mixed it in the sprayer, pumped it up and began to spray under the truck. I mainly covered the outside of the frame rails from in the wheel wells and layed on the ground to get the outside of the frame from there. I did not go down the center to get the inside of the frame just to compare later. The sprayer did not fan the oil like I had hoped it would it was more of a stream but it did cover and creep into tight spots pretty well. I parked the truck out in the grass afterwards to let the excess drip off. So far for money invested I can't complain. The black oil gave the frame a nice look and I've driven through rain/snow twice so far and the water just beads up, with the oil film on the metal the water does not penetrate. Will this "rust proof" the truck? I suppose in a way it would by keeping moisture, salt and such away from the metal and sealing out the oxygen with the film layer hence preventing the rust. Would another product be better? Possibly, I have only experimented with this out if boredom for the most part but so far, for nothing really invested I feel this would be a cheap alternative and use up some of that oil you don't know what to do with. See pics....... Just as a comparison, this is the dry frame, before coating.

Heater Core
@Mopar1973Man is that on your Cummins? I thought you just went round and round with that steering box?

Noticed a fuel smell and a few drops on the pavement.
Last update** So you finally received the fuel drain valve thanks to the stupid slow snail mail. Installed it 2 day ago and so far no more leak. Simple install, best done with a magnetic torx driver.

Carrier bearing shot
Thanks for the insight @Dumb A, it makes sense though. The forces and actions of anything operating at a high speed changes alot of dynamics.

Another quad - mpg question
I drive my 3500 dually 4x4 daily. I guess I'll pay whatever fuel is at the time but I won't give up my truck. Mine is mostly stock, summer milage was about 17-17.5 mpg. I'm sure winter blend will drop it some but I'll deal with it.

Correct, unfortunately the rubber usually begins to break down over time and splits. If you don't see the split dirt enters and not long after your replacing the part. I have several antique tractors here on the farm, a few Farmall, a John Deere, ford and a couple Massey Harris. They were all equipped with grease-able bearings and such. So far I have yet to replace any. The ford is the newest at 1973, the oldest would be our Massey Harris 101 circa 1938.

Manual Fuel Pump
I was curious since I read somewhere that once Cummins supplied the engine dodge did a few things that fell short of the requirements. Can't recall what they were at the moment. I know the engine itself is a very solid and reliable foundation as long as it is fed properly. The dodge parts of the vehicle wear out before the engine does.

Crisis Proportion or Covid Craziness.......
My sister in law has had the Rona the past two weeks. She is doing well, she said she's been sleeping alot, no energy and some breathing trouble and fever but not as bad as what she expected.

Is there a "recirc" for heat?
@dripley, that's basically what Geno's sells. It hangs behind the grill in front of the air cooler and stuff. It has velcro on the center flaps to control air flow. Seems to me that it may be more than I would need, it's also a screen behind the solid flaps to keep bugs out if the radiator.

Carrier bearing shot
I guess I just like the idea of pumping clean grease in and forcing the contaminated grease out. Makes sense to me but I get the "maintenance free" side of the sealed parts as well.

Is there a "recirc" for heat?
I made some cardboard inserts like what you have last year. I couldn't quite get them cut to fit as nice as I would like. I wanted to use them for a template to make some from a more durable material, stainless possibly. I've looked at the covers sold by Geno's and those seem to cover up quite alot. Might be nessesary somewhere else but I doubt here in ohio.

Manual Fuel Pump
Was that a change made by Cummins or dodge?

Crisis Proportion or Covid Craziness.......
Between the population rising and the ineffective masks that we wear as the public and the shortage of hospital bed and medical supplies it's going to get worse. I saw a story on my Yahoo feed that claims there is a different strain of the virus making its way into the stars from Europe that is more contagious than what's here already. I've been off work for a little over a month because of a torn meniscus in my knee so I've managed to keep my distance from most people. Once I go back though it may be a problem. My sister in law has it now so my brothers family is quarantined. We had to exclude them from Christmas because of it.

And @Mopar1973Man, do you run any sort of winter cover at all when the temps dip to zero or below?

FORD - For Only Retarded Drivers
I've noticed that as well. Some of the Cummins guys around here will even wave a hand at you kinda like when I'm on the motorcycle. It's sorta like a family you've become part of by having a Cummins. Some of the ford diesel guys around here though, if they notice a Cummins they tend to try and show off a bit and roll coal or run up the rpm's so the turbo makes more of that strange flutter that ford's make. They can show off all they want, when their trucks dies from all the build up of soot and constant flogging of the go pedal for no reason mine will still be on the road doing it's thing. My son's brother in law has a newer duramax and brags that he's done this and that to it and it has XXXhp and such. I told him mine is basically stock and will keep it close to that set up for along time (other than a few things). He is on his second duramax, I'll have mine long after he buys his 4th or 5th truck. Lol

FORD - For Only Retarded Drivers
Is there a way to mount one of those on the hood of my truck!? That's awesome!!!

FORD - For Only Retarded Drivers
Bad thing about semis is typically you don't have the acceleration to pass the dummies in front of you. I used to when I was an owner/op but company trucks now days are all governed, like now where I work they cut us off at 62 on the pedal and 65 on cruise. That would be awesome!!!!!!!

FORD - For Only Retarded Drivers
I'm not afraid of it, just don't like it anymore. I've been driving semi trucks for over 20 years, I've seen my share of stupid out there. I used to be like you, everything was a fun challenge. It's worn off now. Lol

FORD - For Only Retarded Drivers
I give you props @leety, I would not spend a single second in the greater L.A. area! For some reason weather it be the For Only Retarded Drivers as @Mopar1973Man mentioned or shear coincidence, nearly EVERY time someone does something stupid near me on the roads they're driving a ford. I don't know why that is but I've grown to be more cautious around ford's now. It's crazy. And regardless of what people are driving most are just plain stupid, self centered, ignorant, entitled, more important than me total prix! I tend to be very passive while driving these days just because it will get my blood pressure soring. I won't let them idiots affect my personal health like that. They aren't worth it. Rant over?.........maybe. lol

Carrier bearing shot
You would think they would make that bearing with a zerk fitting to grease it. I think they have aftermarket ones that have them. Anyway, I'll try that and check for temp. I'd still have to do near the same amount of disassembly just to replace the rubber isolator I believe. If I have to pull the entire drive shaft I'll clean the slip yoke and re-grease, change the carrier and probably paint it while it's out. I'd like to just replace all the U-joints while it's out as well but money is tight. I already have the paint. Lol

Carrier bearing shot
@NIsaacs, I'm thinking it may just be the rubber part that has deteriorated honestly. Won't know for sure until I remove it though. Unless there is a way I didn't think of to check the bearing while in place?

Is there a "recirc" for heat?
I tried switching to the "max" setting yesterday to try the recirc theory. It works. The vent temp went up shortly after switching which was expected. Then slowly got warmer since it was reheating the same warm cabin air. So, this does work, I didn't not however hear the a/c compressor cycle but it was a chilly 25° outside. Just thought I'd update my findings.

What triggers the oil light to come on?
Yes it can be triggered by multiple issues. Mine came on when my 150amp breaker would trip and voltage dropped to low.

What triggers the oil light to come on?
There is an oil pressure gauge in the cluster, I don't believe there is a light?
