Finally decided to add cupholders! We shall see.

Finally decided to add cupholders! We shall see.
Well @Tractormanyour in luck. I had to run to the store for smokes so I got to drive it. I even purchased a bottle of root beer to place in it to check for interference. AND....I even took some pics for you. So far the only thing i really noticed is that my right thigh will reast against the extended cupholder. Not a big deal, i can get used to that. Other than that little thing i like it. I do have to say though, if you try to place tour cell phone in the little slot closest to you, that dont work. The phone gets in the way. anyway, heres some pics. 2nd gear 4th gear Reverse And 2nd with a pop bottle in the tray 4th gear And reverse I don't know why the 1st pic flipped upside down. As you can see it really does not get in the way of shifting a manual trans. Possibly if I had my 32oz coffee cup but we shall see. For the $22 spent, it is well worth it so far.

Anyone close have a smarty I can borrow?
@kbf98520, no I don't have a tuner.....yet. eventually I'd like to invest in a quad adrenaline but they don't come cheap. @Tractorman, that's a nice little setup. I may consider just doing something like that. I like that it helps a/c in the summer as well.

They wanted to charge 1 hour labor at $150/hour

I've been wanting to get the high idle enabled in my truck, dealer wants more than I think it's worth so next option is to get a smarty and plug it in which will enable this feature. I know DAP will "rent" them out for this but you basically buy it then return it which ties up $650+ until they get it back. Figured I'd ask if someone has one I could borrow to get this enabled.

Annnndddd......done. Not bad, it didn't snap in like I hoped but for $20 I'm not complaining. Had to put a few screws in it to hold it tight and adjust the striker for the lid closure. All in all I like it. After moving through the shift pattern I believe there could be a little interference between the shifter and a soda bottle if it's in the slot closer to the driver. I'll know next time I drive the truck. Still, for the added convenience, especially on a longer drive where shifting isn't so frequent I think it was worth it. This is where I put the screws as to not interfere with the lid closing.

Finally decided to add cupholders! We shall see.
I finally decided to buy a center console extension to add cupholders to my truck. I've been looking at them for a while but couldn't stomach the $50 price tag. Recently the price has been dropping. I picked this up for $22 from Amazon. I haven't installed it yet. I am concerned about clearance while shifting. (5 speed). I'll get pics once installed and report back if there are issues or not.

New rubber for the old girl
Seems decent to me. Worked just fine. My son used it on his bike as well. If something is gonna break it'll be when he is using it. Lol

New rubber for the old girl
If I recall correctly, I ordered mine from Amazon. I did get it from Amazon, just looked through my post. Worked well for me.

My Personal Opinion
You have friends that support you if only by being there to talk/listen. You also have friends and people that count on you. You still have purpose, you still have goals. This is a rough time for you on several fronts. It's very challenging I'm sure. I pretend I have an idea of what your going through, I don't. Only from what you've told me. We've talked at length on occasion and not always about cancer or trucks. Just glad it shifts your train of thought to something else other than your health. And @jlwelding, I never knew you went through all of that. Glad you made it brother!

NV450 5speed blew at 184k miles.
We were laying on our backs fir the most part. It did kind of suck but sometimes you just do what ya gotta do to get the job done.

NV450 5speed blew at 184k miles.
I did mine in my gravel driveway. I laid a large piece of plywood under the truck to have a hard sufa e for the floor jack to roll on. I removed the trans with that. It worked well. I tore it all down myself. When reinstalling I had my boys come over to help. I'll warn you, that trans is HEAVY. They run about 200lbs. When reinstalling it was a bit of a fight with the new shafts, new clutch. The new machined splines and such just don't glide in, they tend to be a bit sticky. It was worth the effort. Had I not flipped the 1st gear shift collar the wrong way this would have been perfect. So far she shifts like butter. The clutch is broken in now and smooth. Even being heavy duty the clutch takes no more effort than the oem.

5th gear

5th gear
I did not do anything with 5th but the previous owner did. It had a non oem nut on it. It was a split nut with a small bolt to tighten it up on the threaded shaft. When I did the rebuild it came off with little effort. I belive it would have failed eventually. Tranny had 183k when the bearings failed. The bearing aren't considered a weak point. I belive the bearing failure is due to the thin oil used per oem and possibly lack of proper oil change intervals. When it failed I had put about 45k on the truck so I blame both the PO for not changing the oil and also myself for not doing it when I first purchased the truck. As far as swapping to a 5600, there really is no gain in my opinion. The final ratio is very close to that of the 4500 and parts availability is an issue also parts for the 5600 are much more expensive. The 5600's weren't as widely used as the 4500. 4500's could be found in dodge, GM and ford trucks along with the likes of panel trucks such as FedEx or ups use. If those trucks were a diesel and manual trans it was essentially the same engine/trans that we have in our truck. (The big panel trucks, I think they're like a 2.5 ton platform) A friend of mine at the moment is rebuilding his 5600, it going to cost him close to 3k just in parts. I did my 4500 myself with new upgraded clutch for about 2k. The clutch was half of the cost. I posted a thread on the rebuild, find that and you'll see what all I did. And I listed all the costs at the end as well.

5th gear
True, I was thinking of my situation. I to was considering welding mine a year ago or so as a precaution, I didn't. Fast forward to late October '23 and the trans grenades. It wasn't the 5rh gear, the front counter shaft bearing ate itself. Had I welded the 5th gear I would have had to do what ever it take to cut through, remove, the main shaft. I also like to know when something is done correctly rather than wonder if a bandaid I put on something will hold. In the end, it's your truck, do it however you want. I'm just offering my opinion based on some of my experience.

5th gear
You would have to cut through the gear itself and the shaft. The gear when installed is very close to the case so getting in between the gear and case to cut the shaft will be nearly impossible.

5th gear
The problem with welding is that will complicate things later and still may not hold. The core issue is the oem main shaft is not fully splined for the 5th gear. It causes the gear to wobble on the splined shaft which in turn works the nut loose. Even welded, with the torque the engine pushes through the trans will eventually break the welds ad well. I would run it til you have to rebuild it and do it right, replace the main shaft with a full spline piece, use a 5th locking system and loctite.

Curse of the 5th gear nut!
If you really don't want to pull it at this time you could look into one of the 5th gear fixes out there. They usually come with a new 5th gear, a different design nut/keeper. There are a few designs out there. This could be done in the truck. You'll have to pull the T-case of course. Then remover the tail housing, 5th gear is right there. I would not recommend welding it, that will create more issues later when you do dig into it to do it right

Looking for issues before buying tuner
As for IAT, I use a winter cover I ordered from Geno's Garage, one of our vendors here on the site. It works very well. We were in the single digits one night I checked with my obd scanner while driving 60mph getting 80°F at the IAT. And the whole thing is behind the grill, can't even see it and keeps people honest.

Howdy from PNW
@kbf98520, you've come to the right place. I've been hanging out here for roughly 4 years now I think. I've learned alot. I also have an '01 (see sig) it's a fun truck to drive. My favorite so far, ive owned many trucks over the years, this is my first diesel.

Going silent
I don't know what exactly happened or who may have voiced an opinion but I for one would like to keep up on the progress of your journey through cancer. Whatever was written and shared in the posts was there to just communicate your progress, struggles and coping mechanisms. If someone don't agree with any of that then that's fine but do we really need to make issue of it? Everyone deals in their own way, to each their own I say. I hope you reconsider your decision @Mopar1973Man. You have been here helping everyone on the issue of trucks among other things. I'd be happy to be here and do what I can to help you in your time of need. We have never met face to face but I consider you a good friend.

Torque convertor locking or OD not engaging?
Have you checked for ac noise in the charging system? I see you did the w-t ground mod but did you take a reading before and after? Just curious. Also @Mopar1973Man, would you have a pic of the military style battery terminal you mention above? I've been considering installing new ones on mine as well. Thanks.

I know this is sudden but...
I'm up for a zoom call over the weekend if we could coordinate a time that works for a few of us I'm up for it
