Screening mouse access in Cirrus...
Yesterday I had a single erand to run. I got a sore throat & chest congestion while on this erand. It's like the heater is putting out fumes... I'm wondering if I'm toasting a mouse / nest again. I'm caughing up green crap last night & this morning. I can drop the heater... but with one functional hand, I can't hold it up & get the 3 stinkin screws back in. I was hoping not to do this.

Guns.....
In my state, school doors are now locked... never were when I was a kid... but these are different times. However, in this, most recent case, the attacker forced his way inside. He had guns but could also have used a vehicle to ram his way in or explosives to blast a door, any door. I agree with restricting access & security cameras but a person on a suicide mission doesn't care if his identity is known. He WANTS his name to be known. Very sad. Hardening the schools, posting armed guards or Police... will not stop the carnage. It will only deflect it to softer targets, shopping malls, movie theaters... Gun control? These were his mother's guns. Bought legally under strict gun control and registered to her. Reports are now... from her family... that she bought them 'for protection'. Sadly, she did not recognizing the evil living in her home... the danger was from within, not without!I don't think that K-12 schools can allow staff to CCW. Personal weapons would be too hard to secure every second of every day. I do think that college level schools should allow properly licensed CCW among students & staff... & well concealed... after those persons recognize that being armed will change & must change how they can particpate in activities. No partying!! I once taught adult scuba classes in Boston at night. At the graduation dinner, I learned that the head instructor (a City Cop) was packing 4" S&WM19, a student (a Security Guard) a Gov Model 45ACP and little old me S&WM39, 9mm. The student had been removing his should holster in the toilet stall & everybody brought their gym bags into the pool area since the locker room was shared. The guard was always nicely dressed with a suit & tie... Normal people would not want to harm another... somehow, troubled people need to be identified & helped. In the short term, the best we can do is harden targets. Just as the TSA has not stopped the terrorist movement... we need to identify those who are truely dangerous. I don't know how to do this if the nut keeps it to themselves. The adults who died... did so charging the shooter in a despitate attempt to stop him. The one wounded teacher who survived was closing the door & locking, didn't know she'd been hit until after he turned away from the locked door. All the rest had multiple gunshot wounds, adults & children. (according to the coroner) The lock down concept can not save those first encountered but it certainly saved many others. There isn't a good way to stop a suicide bomber or shooter... I see a lot of stores in our area, have recently installed protective posts, in front of the doors, or sometimes all around the stores. It's crazy!I don't see any easy fix... Obiviously, strict gun control didn't stop this.

Guns.....
Firearms can not be de-invented. Jeff Cooper pointed out that even in mythology... they gave their Gods the power to point the hand & strike down at a distance. So I think it is an inate human desire. If we did de-invent firearms, human kind would probably invent something worse. Phasers at 10 paces! Last time I check, the UK... an island for gosh sakes... has one of the strictest gun laws in the world YET has a rising incidence of armed crime. Persons who are set on breaking laws, don't bother to count how many they break. But if we did eliminate every gun from US, then knives, swords, gasoline, fertillizer & propane... will then have to be controled as well. I don't know how you get into someone elses head... to intervene before they do some horrible crime. In this latest case... everybody seemed to think he had mental problems for years... Except perhaps his mother, who legally bought numerous guns. Apparently additional guns were found in her home. I have no basis for saying so but I don't think the guns were for her. DENIAL?? At 20 he could not buy pistols himself. CT has strict gun control laws... but a wacko will buy stolen guns or steal them himself... or find another weapon... We think of all of CT (state line is just a mile from our house) as neighbors... this is very close to home. It has been a wrenching couple of days.

Guns.....
I don't know that there is an answer... something I noticed in the movie 'The Bodyguard" but not an original thought... I'm thinking that Jeff Cooper may have been my first reading of it. It's almost impossible to stop somebody who is willing to die to kill someone else. These d*mn cowards, pick the weakest, the most vulerable. If we lock up & guard the schools... and many have... the wackos shift to shopping malls or theaters. They could do the world so much good if they'd just reverse the order, starting with themselves in stead of ending there. It happened in neighboring CT, so there is no other news & I don't remain unaffected. In this case there are sadly heros. The administrators who died trying to intervene. The other teachers are geros too, who locked their class rooms... just as they drilled recently... and protected their children. Since I was on the PD, a new protocal for an active shooter. Shooter used a Glock & SigSaur 9mms recovered in the school, an AR15 found in his car. He started with his mother, found dead at their home. He's only 20, she bought the guns legally & registered to her. I am at a loss...

Fuel pump will not energize
I had an electrical failure on the lift pump... traced back to a connection on I think the passenger's battery, a few inches from the ground terminal... I'm thinking closest to the air filter. My mechanic found it. Use your multi meter & a clip lead... test for volts each side of each connection until you find it. Say set your meter to volts. Test across the battery terminals itself (proves the meter & probes are working. Then systematically work out. Clip to the plus, use your probe to test both sides of every joint in the ground wiring. Clip the meter ground to the battery ground, use your probe to test the + side. It's hard to think logically when it's your ride. I could calmly work on others engines all day but at quitting time, mine had better start!

Leaking Overhead Cab Marker Lights
One of my elderly aunts had an all original 1937 Pontiac. Her late husband had driven it for a year as a traveling salesman before he died & it had like 20k on it. As long as she was alive, when you took her to the store, you had to drive her car. It needed some slight restoration but you wouldn't believe the vultures trying to score that car. After she passed away, it was sold, properly, for a good price. I remember visiting with her. She was so proud of her remodeled kitchen... The ancient wood cook stove had been rebuilt with kerosene burners in the remodel. I think the ice box had been replaced with a electric refridgerator but she wouldn't part with the former.

Leaking Overhead Cab Marker Lights
My 97 Cirus was my Mom's car... had always been garaged... Mom never told me but left instructions with my sister that I was to get the car. It was 5 years old and 9000 miles on the clock. I just did the timing belt with 120k on it now.

IAT and MAP sensor
Mike makes a good point. Are we building race cars / trucks? Or are we building efficient economical trucks? One that gets good mpgs & then goes to work towing our toys or whatever.

IAT and MAP sensor
As I posted previously... I bought an extension harness for the IAT plug, cut it in the center & extended into the cab, installed a toggle on the knee panel. I turn the IAT back to stock to start... The "Wait to Start" light works normally as does the grid heaters. Starts up normally. Once it's running I flip the switch on the IAT fooler, which uses a resistor with (if memory serves me) a 143* value... equivent to a warmed up engine. It's worth about 1mpg in cold weather... on my truck. "Cold Air Intakes" are popular & sell well. CAI is a hold over from naturally aspirated gasoline race cars, where they did/do work. What modern consumers fail to consider is the differences between those cars & modern smogged cars... with IAT sensors. Modern fuel injected cars run far leaner than my old favorite carbureted engines... which gives them the high rated mpgs... but is why the computers richen the mix for cold engines. Now consider diesels... fired by the heat of compression. Then consider, that most of our trucks are intercooled (charge cooled between the turbo & the intake). THEN consider that the CTD has a water jacketed intake to warm the incoming air. Overall, I don't believe the CAIs do anything to help a diesel. Winter Fronts (fitted pieces blocking the grill) to keep warm air under the hood are a popular topic on this site. BHAFs draw warm underhood air...

Leaking Overhead Cab Marker Lights
I need to get back up there & I'm no light weight. I figure a step ladder against the door pillar & keep my weight on the frame. Reach as far as possible. That's the theory anyway. Probably need to swing the mirrors.

Nothing left to drive
I got the truck back from the Brake Shop pretty quickly. They replaced all the lines under the truck. The steel lines were rotted out, the rubber lines were shot. It wasn't cheap but the truck stops like it means it.

new exhaust
I was disgusted with the OEM tailpipe rotting off... and then the rear of the muffler rusted apart. I went to Stainless Steel: 4" is bigger than the head pipe but was the first step up. I bought a turbo back kit off Ebay. The "muffler" is straight through. It sounded nice running empty. Towing on the highway, I got a drone. I install a 36" FTE spiral resonator behind the cross brace ahead of the muffler. It did break up the drone. It would have installed the resonator sooner. The system uses all the OEM hangers & is still in perfect condition.

Enhanced security.
Your hose clamp would have been much cheaper & might be more secure as it'd be harder to access from underneath requiring the right socket, a good light & a couple of extensions. Parking over a big mud puddle would be the ultimate protection! LOL!! I honestly was expecting the bolt to be a special security bolt at least, not an allen bolt. Give me a Break! As I posted ealier, I got an email to clarify my order... asfter which their web site appears to be updated. I think the site showed a 2 pin security bolt previously. I'm not proud. I'm posting this so other members will know better. We learn from our mistakes as well as our Victories!

Be careful not to oil an the roof. Must be done from the side unless you're skilled at levitation! LOL!!

NOT worth what I paid. I can't believe they could sell these where someone could see it first. To be a deterant, it will have to be lock-tited in place. BTW, These tailgate hinges only have 2 bolts each side. Unbolt either side & the tailgate comes off.

I don't know but I've had leaks from my overhead from time to time. Now my overhead is out!

Screening mouse access in Cirrus...
Thanks Walter... I hadn't though of the hose ports in the firewall.

Enhanced security.
OK, I got the tailgate hinge "lock"... I am very underwhelmed. A 4" piece of bent steel, a lock washer and a round head allen bolt. I think the site has been updated since my order (I got an email asking for a clarification)... I thought the site originally showed a 2 pin security bolt. Maybe if I used RED locktite on it!

My headlights are afflicted..
The beams look properly focused now. I think you'll be happy. It's hard to be sure but photo 2 looks like the filaments are orientated differently, even though the key ways appear to be similar angles. A moot point...

The last time I tried, I backed off rather than wreck something. It'll probably come right off with the correct pull. It's been on there 15 years.

Princess's Castle!
Sheila (with her parlor gituar) & the ladies who play Dulcimers participated in Christmas at the (Smith's) Castle last weekend... playing period songs.Meanwhile, I've gotten back to the Princess's Castle. I started with the Home Depot 'towers'... 4 foot cardboard sonotubes. I found our dining table level enough, used a chalk line to get my initial verticle line, measured over & made a second line. Went over the lines with a straight edge clamped in place & an indelible marker. With that, I used my trusty jig saw to cut the rear access. I found trying to hold these round shapes resembled a greased eel... but a big clamp hung on the bottom tended to make it self righting & a big help. Repeat on second tube.

Screening mouse access in Cirrus...
Good advise. The mice only appear in the blower cage, plug up the heater core airflow, or block cooling air from the speed resistor where it extends into the ductwork for cooling. So this is why I've concluded it has to be a flaw in the HVAC system. I doubt if I could get the heater motor back in (again) with my disability.

Red lined
I may be all wet... this sounds like a run away. (crazy) Throttle return spring failure. Otherwise I'm going to guess you have a hang up in the IP. Since diesels speed is controled by the fuel injected... there's no choke or throttle on the air inlet... the only way to stop a full runaway is to use something solid that won't be sucked into the engine like a solid board & remove the rubber hose & block the air flow til it shuts off.

My headlights are afflicted..
Try just changing the bulbs first. Scientific Method: only change one variable at a time. (HS science class) If it is the correct bulb, I notice the orientation keys LOOK LIKE it could be rotated... I don't think it can unless something has been altered or damaged. The filiment must be horrizontal. I'm interested to solve this.
