This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Ok... My truck went to down after a hard run here locally. Trying to turn around on the highway and out run a semi-truck. Finally blown the head gasket. Not bad but it weeping oil out the front. Still starts and runs. Yes I know most like the smallish turbo (drive pressure) is my problem and need to upgrade. Right now with all that is going on my 2002 is going to remain down for some time and let me fix it right. I know I got to pull the head and get it inspected for sure then reinstall.     Saturday had a little trouble getting the truck to start. Checked for codes with my handy dandy DRB3 and sure enough crank position sensor showed up . Ordered 1 and it will be in tommorow afternoon at the local dealer. Figured I was okay to run some errands with it today...not so much. Quit all together at a local muffler shop...grrrr. Figured might as well get it floated home, no problem. Home in the yard I do a bit of diagnosis and think it strange that I have 1 lb fuel pressure. So I use a piece of harness and jump the pump direct...no sound. Pull the pump and find the wires burnt right off at the pump. Must have chafed or something but I dont know why. Nothi…

    So I know that the lockup switch is a pretty well discussed topic but I was wondering. For those that have the switch either momentary or constant, do you see any benefit to having the option to use either one? For instance, I was thinking of having a momentary foot peddle switch up by the parking brake and another on/off switch on my console somewhere for times where I would want to keep it on and not have to hold the foot switch down. Good? bad? dumb? pointless? genius?!

  4. I just got done changing the oil in my truck. This is the first time I changed the oil myself. I used Goofy-Lube the last 2 times (I know, I know, WHY would you do that...). When I went to take the drain plug out I noticed 2 issues, one, the square spot where you put you're 3/8th inch socket wrench was partially stripped (Goofy-Lube) and two, the plug was so tight I had to get a cheater bar to break it loose (I won't be going to Goofy-Lube anymore). My question is if anyone uses any of the drain valves in place of the drain plug. I saw some for sale on Geno's Garage like this one and this one. Just not sure how safe it is having something li…

    A few months ago I noticed a small amount of oil on the ground and traced it to the vacuum pump/ PS pump are and resealed both pumps. Went a while without seeing any more oil until tonight I pulled the truck into the shop and an hr later noticed a 3 in dia puddle. It looks like it is either coming from vacc pump or front main or timing cover. The front half of he truck is plastered with oil which is very disturbing to me. ( no more rust is a + side lol) Cleaned up things good with brake cleaner and we will see what happens. Any idea why the pump would leak again so soon? Look like it’s possibly coming from where the pump mounts to the gear case. Really hoping I don’t have…

    I have an 02 dodge 3500 6 speed and a few months back my ecm went bad and the one I replaced it with is out of an automatic truck... truck runs as it should but my question is if I put a programmer (smarty) on it will it work as it should or am I going to fry my ecm thanks in advance for any helpful info

    Okay, fellas I need some help understanding what I'm seeing here. Over the past several drives, when I first start the truck up the BRAKE and ABS lights might stay on for a short bit (less than a minute) and then go out. Once or twice, I also caught the speedo popping up as I started to drive. Like it was at 0, then suddenly popped up to whatever speed I was going, 20-ish MPH... I wasn't really watching it, so I'd sorta see it happen just outside of my view.     Anyone ever run one? Does it work as advertised? As I read you can command it to lock and stay locked from drive to OD (2nd if you have a modded valve body). Kind've tired of the factory pcm tranny control and fighting with lockup issues. Thoughts?

    I'm still messing around doing my re-install of an airdog system (since Sept) I printed out the directions to have them with me in the carport. When sipping on a cup of coffee, I noticed under "trouble shooting" section Airdog says... "It is important that your ECM re-flashings are up to date. Contact your local dealer for the most recent re-flash". I've never had a re-flash, I never been to the dealer since I owned it in 2005. Had a FASS pump put in late 2006 and a new water pump and T-stat put in couple years ago. Is this a re-flash a CYA type statement or should I take this seriously?     I’m getting a recurring P1688 controller failure on my VP44. However, it’s easily cleared and the truck runs just fine. Could it just be the PSG is slow to boot up? Codes: 1688, 1693 companion Code reading/clearing method: Edge JwA Two scenarios 1. Turn the key on, 1688 is active, clear it, then start the truck without ever turning the key off.     Hey guys... My truck has been giving me a hard time starting. It started happening last year and only did it when I was parked nose uphill. I remember reading something about this one time a few years back... but never heard what the cause was. This year.. a few months ago.. it's been starting hard on level ground. I have to hold the key on for 10-15 secs til it fires up. Almost like leaving it unplugged on cold days of winter. This only happens the first start of the day and only if I let it sit for more than 24 hours. Where do I start? No pun intended.... Thanks

    Thought I should start a build thread on my truck. Truck is a 99 ECLB DRW factory Sport pkg. I will be replacing and upgrading the entire suspension and steering with parts from DOR LLC. As well as a new ps pump and lines from Geno's, red head steering box, borgstein shaft, and ram rock solid bushing.   14. Newbie here, play nice. My son's 2001 24V 6Sp manual has started an interesting/frustrating new habit. Seems as if once the beastie gets up to temperature and your changing throttle positions I'm getting an uncommanded shutdown. I verified this phenomenon this afternoon by shoving a thumbtack through my Red/Lt. Green 12V+ wire going to my VP44 and hooking up a VOM to it. Sitting in the driveway I let it idle and gave it some light accelerator action until Barney the Wonder Mule warmed up. I opened the throttle to about 2000 rpm once it got close to 190 degrees and ran the accelerator pedal above and below 2000 RPM about 200 rpm either side of the 2K mark. Sure enough wit…

    Not quite sure what the problem is, but here's what happened. I had cruise set at 75 and everything was fine, tuck ran fine, good oil pressure, plenty of power, no warning lights, etc. All of the sudden there was a clicking sounding type of a knock, for lack of a better description and a lot of bluish smoke I think, it was dark but I could see smoke in the mirrors. It would increase as the RPM's did. I got off the turnpike and called a wrecker. Checked the oil it was full and no puddles or leaks.     Hi, my truck is stored for winter. I need to rebuilt my trans. this spring cause last autumn I had a leaking problem at the inspection cover. The trans. shift Ok but in O.D I felt a little slippage . I was thinking of an oil pump seal or maybe the converter????     I got a guy that has been in touch with me by email and been trying to figure out his CCD Bus problems. So far nothing I suggested works. Currently he can see the 2.5 and 2.4 vold bias voltage at the OBDII port he's only got the ECM and PCM plugged in to the bus all other modules (Radio, ABS, AirBag, etc.) are unplugged to try and isolate the problem. But still it will not communicate... The engine will start and run... Tachometer functions but all other gauges are dead. No AirBag or ABS lights... But unable to read error codes at all. I'm hoping one of you might have an idea...

Have a few problems and wanted to ask you guys for some suggestions.I'm having the following codes pop up:p0215, p0314, p1689, and p1690.I lose tach after engine heats up.Mileage does not seem to be affected.Engine is sluggish.I took battery leads off of drivers side battery and left them off for a couple of hours while I did some work on the truck.     Anybody have ideas on this little problem? My cruise control surges, meaning it will hold speed, but as you are at highway speeds it will vary rpm roughly every 5 seconds. This gets to be REALLY annoying when on a 6 hour trip.... I have not done any trouble shooting yet, just wondering if anyone else has had this. Thanks, Chris
