he Lowdown on the New Low-Viscosity Oils TMC session examines what's going in to the new API engine oil standard and what engine makers are doing to prepare. March 2014, TruckingInfo.com - WebXclusive by Deborah Lockridge, Editor in Chief - Also by this author SHARING TOOLS |PrintSubscribe Share on emailShare on facebookShare on twitterShare on linkedinMore Sharing Services6 Kinematic viscosity is what you might envision when thinking of viscosity – gravitational flow. But the new oils will meet viscosity standards measured at high temperatures/high shear conditions. To meet the expected greenhouse gas/fuel efficiency standards that…

Just curious what everyone is seeing for oil pressure. I'm seeing 60-70 idle cold engine, 25-40 idle warm engine and 50-60 cruising down the highway.

The oil pressure on my truck always reads above 40. It is usually just before the slash mark between the middle 40 and the max 110 readings. (On the stock gauge) Is this alright? Why would it show this high? Thanks

Evening everyone!I had a weird observation yesterday that was out of the norm. here it goes.normally on my engine when i startup cold with ambient temps around 75F it will idle around ~28psi max. (for testing only) when revved cold at same ambient temp it will hit maybe ~65psi max.last night sitting in the garage at work i started it up and it was around 75ambient and idle psi was 40-42, revved to test it peaked at 80+!driving home i kept an eye on it and once fully warmed up it went to normal, 25 stabel at idle and 59-62 revved to test. appx 2000rpm.tonight i changed the filter from cheapo to the usual purolator pure one with the grippy crap on it to see if there was som…

Man, I need a break... this morning, went out to get ready for work.. start truck for warm up. Leave about 10 min later. About 4 miles from house, look down at gauges and no oil pressure, turn around, go back to house. Check oil, ok, it was a little low (Qt & 1/2) but not enough to show no pressure. It didn't knock or run any different than normal. So I check the gauges out ( key off, push and hold trip odom. button, turn key to on) Everything checks out ok. So I figure its the oil pres. sending switch. Call Autozone... $197 bucks. No way i'm paying that, can get a aftermarket for $100. So, I drove it today, no problems: water temp ok, no engine nock, the c…

If the crankcase vent was clogged or had a partial blockage would/could it cause higher oil pressure?

I know the oil pressure sending units and readout are not the best in the 99 dodge rams. Mine is fine when running but drops to 0 at idle. The engine sounds perfect so I assume it's the sensor / sending unit. My question, does using fully synthetic affect this at all? I wouldn't think so but thought I'd ask.

Hi there guys names Rick, I’ve had my 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 for about 4 years now. Since I bought the truck the oil pressure is well above 40 pounds when I first turn truck on. After the truck temp gauge goes up the oil pressure drops below 40 at idle, if I give it some fuel oil pressure goes up. I saw a video of mopar1973man on YouTube explaining that it’s an electronic issue between the two sensors. Is there a fix for this? Thanks for any help in advance

I want to check out oil pressure on a 01 Dodge 3500 because the stock gauge is erratic in the cab. It works good then drops, then works again on and off. I want to check it manually. I know that there is a 1/8x27 npt port on the oil filter housing I can tap into, but can I use a regular oil gauge I have here in the shop for testing purposes with the crappy plastic tubing just to check it? Its not going to be permanent of course. I think the gauge inside is shot, but just checking. Thanks, Steve

Okay getting close to wanting to throw fuel in my tank and see if my engine even runs, but I want to make I didn't miss (or screw up) anything. So It's been 8 yrs since it's run some my memory it a little foggy, anyway when I turn key to on Oil pressure gauge goes up to 40psi, Tap starter it goes back down, this correct? Obviously I don't know what it will when actually started, Sure I'll have oil pressure just don't want to backtrack any on any wiring.

Can an oil pressure gauge be used for fuel pressure? I hooked it up to both test ports on filter housing with no readings. I cracked the line each time to get the air out and has fuel but get no readings. Can this not be done or am I doing something wrong. Thanks in advance I’m currently waiting on vulcans lift pump relocation kit and 3/8 fuel line from the pump to the housing and also to the vp44. It should be here tomorrow or the next day. I’ll be able to use the tee for the gauge then. I have an edge comp box, without tap, at the moment. Could this setup with a carter pump be enough to tap the pump possibly?

Oil pressure gauge has intermittently been working for the past couple days, been working on start up then I'll start driving and it will randomly drop then come back alive. Seems like it likes to drop out more so when I come to a stop and the truck is idling with lower oil pressure. When I'm cruising and have like 40 psi it usually stays alive. If I come to a stop and it does while I'm sitting there idling I can rev and hold it at like 1100 then it magically comes back alive on the dash. Is this most likely the oil pressure sensor? Or could it be a bad ground somewhere? Sitting idling right now and it's jumping back and fourth check gauges light will come on it will drop…

I have a 2001 24v and it will read 40 psi of oil pressure weather its running or the key is just turned to the start position. I might add that it still reads 40psi with oil pressure sensor unplugged well. I have tried a good know cluster and it does the same thing. I've cleaned all grounds and checked them. Anyone know what it could be?

Just noticed today that the oil pressure is way high while driving and not really moving even upon reaching operating temperature. Driving pressure at low throttle is 60-70 at full temp. and idling is right around 60. Here's the gauge, full operating temp. while idling... Even before starting, the gauge shows 40, then after start up right to the 60-70 mark and doesn't move much. I'm hoping this is just the sending unit and not a bearing or electrical problem. Any insights? Thank you ps...I know I have oil pressure because I didn't tighten the turbo oil return line enough and it was leaking, I tightened a couple days ago and no more leaks.

Hi All, my truck has recently presented a new issue. The oil pressure reads rather high, mostly all the time on the gauge on the dash. I'm thinking the oil pressure sensor could be failing, but I would rather make sure my oil pressure is correct. The bad news is I'm about 200 miles away from home for the next week and don't have my service manual with me (doh!). The good news is I have access to tools so I may be able to solve this while I'm here. I have a mechanical oil pressure gauge and was thinking about testing the pressure first before making assumptions, does anyone know if anyone posted an article about how to prope…

Since I have had my truck, the stock oil pressure gauge has not worked. The people before me installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the pillar but I want to put my fuel pressure gauge there. Is there any way to test the oil pressure sender? I just want to make sure thats whats wrong. The gauge in the dash just sits at 40 psi any time the key is on. I also have the code p0522. I believe that is for the oil pressure being out of range or something. Thanks!!! - - - Updated - - - I read through the p0522 code article already, I was just wondering if anyone had a similar problem with their oil sensor before. I am pretty sure its just the sending unit but I dont…

Recently my oil factory gauge drops to zero, and the check gauges comes on and the warning buzzer goes off. This can happen 3x in 1/4 mile or once in 30 miles. Checked for codes, checked oil level, recent oil change about 1500 miles ago. I am thinking it is the oil pressure sender going bad. Just wondering if there is something I am missing. Did a search on the site and can't find anything on the oil pressure sender. I have been thinking about a 4th gauge on the pillar. This might be a good time for an oil pressure gauge! Any comments are appreciated.

I have oil all around the sending unit, I guess thats where it's coming from. Is this a Dodge item or can I get this from auto parts?

I just had to replace a pressure sending switch and thought I would share the differences. The old dirty one is from a 3500 I am working on. The other is one I ordered through Amazon that crossed referenced with the stock one, but Wow what a difference! It seems to work like the old one when I first bought it in 02 though. Lol I know some of you are going to say, “put a mechanical gauge in it”. Rest assure I intend to, but it is a waste unfortunately because none of my employees will watch gauges. Lol This is why I like the stock dash gauge because at least they hear the chime going off and then see the indicator light on the dash. Then they just complain to me the s…
