2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Just wanted to make another plug for Pete's awesome kit. Another satisfied customer here with the instructions, video, and 'tools' to get the old seal out. My driveway hasn't looked this clean in months, and of course, she's a happy truck not dripping oil down onto the axle. I must have called Pete about 5 times when I did the repair and he was happy to help out every time.

Are they anything special and where do you get them? And what is the magic number? 7 comes to mind but not sure. Could just search for this but thought it may be a worth while topic for others to read.

I have never had a fuel leak, but low and behold... When I power down, I get a drip off the bottom of the transmission.... I put a cup under it and collected a small amount, but enough to realize it sucks... Seems to be related to pressure in the lines as it stops after 10-minutes or so. Any ideas where to check for the most common fuel drips?:confused:

I'm going to unwrap and repair my engine wire harness. I figured that I should document what it is, so that I can put it back together when I'm done. This is an image I stitched together after taking about 20 separate pictures. Full_Stitch_6_5600x1000.zip

Today I went up to the mountains and noticed something.... Whenever my EGTs were below 350* and I stepped on the throttle (NOT in gear) it really struggled to rev up. It would buck and pop and blow white smoke, then when it got to around 2,000 rpm it would smooth out and rev up higher just fine. I tried it multiple times because there were no cars around, and had the same result every time. Now why would it do this?? Could altitude be a factor? Could outside ambient temps cause it? Could high timing at low rpms cause it? I've heard of pre-ignition on diesels with high timing but I'm not sure if that's what it was. I will say the smarty was on #1 which is supposed to…

I'm looking at Crazy Carls 2/3 compound kit for S300 w/475 right now. It sounds like I have the right smaller turbo for this to work, just not sure which larger turbo I should go with. My current turbo is the GXE 57/65/12 gated T3, for the new S475 it lists either a 96/1.32 or a 96/1.15. I'm not sure which one would work for me. The truck is just an occasional driver/tow rig so I don't need max power. I would like to keep the boost around 50psi as well. I have head studs but am still rocking the OEM head gasket with 250k miles. I sent an email to Carls asking their opinion as well, and to see if maybe there were other options.

  7. I can see a few fittings but don't want to remove one if its a coolant passage or somthing. Thanks guys this website rocks. Chris

Hi all, new to this forum and do I have a good one. what we have here is a 2001 3500 drw 6 speed, chip is back to stock 4 inch exh and a k&n, other than that all stock. Ok here we go, I have a pile of codes and I don't always get the same ones when I clear them. 1693 0522 0117 1475 0237 0217 1295 0122 0127 these are the most common ones I get back when I ether clear them with disconnecting the batts or with a scanner or the smarty. The other thing is going on is the gages are all over the map, temp goes up to 240 and sets more chimes and things, oil gage intermittent, volt sometimes goes down when revving up and oh, the thing misses horribly. So these are the things I…

Hey im doing a clutch install in my 02 six speed. Got the trans down and out and im looking for my pilot bearing but there is none. Nothing. Stock original clutch. Did it bust apart and fall out? Also, there is alot of what looks like grease and oil in the bell housing, im guessing from the throw out bearing, but there seems to be alot of it. The bearing spins very free and has hardly any play in it. Dd the grease come from there? The input shaft has very little play as well. Where else could the **** come from?

My question is if all the shims was put back in place and i over tightened the pinion nut should the pinion still turn? or i have to have it torqued right? I dont have a 500 torque wrench. or should i buy a shim (between the yoke and outer bearing?. I need to fix my diff in2 days the garage will be used after that. thanks in advance for any help. espanton@telusplanet.net

Replaced wheel bearing, seals, calipers and pads and thought while I'm there I'll replace pinion bearing and seal. It is froze on there, we pryed on it, hit shaft with dead blow hammer and we just put the seal in and and said run it. Any tips on getting it out short of stripping rear end?

  14. So my pinion deal decided to throw gear oil all over my truck last weekend so I’m replacing it. 2 questions, first any tips on getting this seal to come out? I’ve been working at it with a hammer and screwdrivers and it doesn’t want to go. Also, not sure of the name but the input Shaft of the differential has a LOT of play. It’s moving around a ton when I’m going at the seal with the screwdriver. Really hoping this is normal, needing a rear end would not make me happy. I took a video of the play but I’m not sure how I could get it to post here. It’s moving quite a bit, though. Any advice is helpful, thanks!

This is my first post on here guys, I’m in dire need of your help. 8 days ago I had a rebuilt transmission with a shift kit and triple disc converter put in the truck; a mile into the test drive all gauges were lost. Inline Performance figured out that it was a bad PCM and put a new one in it. Today I had to run home for something and left the truck running in the driveway for no more than 10 minutes. When I came back out, no gauges we’re working but the tach, the odometer is reading No Bus and the transmission won’t shift out of 3rd unless manually done. Please give me ideas, I feel my case is different than a lot of other no bus threads on here seeing as I …

  17. Hi everybody. I am new here, and I have an interesting problem. Thanks in advance. 2000 5.9, 5sp, 4x4. 210,000mi. New injector pump from Midwest EFI, new Air Dog 100 lift pump. Otherwise stock. After sitting for a few days, it will take 5-10 sec crank time to start, but once it starts it runs normally. Tech is steady and normal. Not much smoke except at RPM near redline. When the truck is warm, if you let it idle, it will miss slightly. Power sucks over 2000 rpm, but isn't bad overall. Throws PO234 overboost code, but I feel that is due to the fact that I left my Edge boost elbow on the turbo. Edge juice CTS won't connect to the…

  18. 01 dodge 2500 Cummins diesel. Started off it turned over fast but wouldn't start. I changed a VERY CORRODED terminal end and it started. I drove it across town and shut it off then it went back to the same thing, turned over but wouldn't start again. Visually inspected cables and changed all the terminal ends but it didn't help. Now it won't even turn over. No click or anything when I turn the key. Hooked a wire to both posts of the starter it only sparked a little no click or spin. Took both batteries and the starter in for testing but they all tested good. When I put the starter back in it did turn over once slow then nothing.

JJSNOW sent me this PMso I asked Mike Nelson to get it Posted for @JJSNOW.... My dually 98.5 ram 3500 5.9 turbo diesel has been down since May. I have spent thousands and thousands on parts. I have replaced every part per mechanics request from the injector pump, every sensor on the truck and now I am told that I need to send my PCM off. I don't have the money to continue this journey. I love my truck. It is for me. A guy hit me and I had just received a check to have it fixed. After purchasing my new bed (which is still in Mississippi and not picked up yet), new carpet, finished my stereo system, immediately had to start buying these parts. I was so e…
