2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

  1. After changing my fuel filters, if it doesn’t kick off within 30 seconds, I usually grab a rag, pour some lawn mower gas on it, give rag a good squeeze until gas stops dripping out, open up air box, lay rag on air filter, (starter has rested by now), and turn the key. After it fires off, remove rag real quick. Engine does rev up a little, for few seconds but not bad. Today yacking with neighbor who is changing his filters on his back hoe says big mistake. What’s your opinion? Thanks

  2. So over the past few days i have been dealing with an issue with my truck. Sometimes it starts when i put the key in and turn it sometimes it doesn't... this morning fine, this afternoon fine tonight at the fuel station nothing. the only why to get it to start is jumper across the terminal at the starter with the key on.... any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

  3. I started my ball joint replacement today. It took a while to find the 1-11/16 socket. All the sears around me were out of them and the parts stores wanted 40$+. I am down to removing the Hubs. I tried the socket and power steering trick to no avail. Sledge hammer did not work either. Hubs have had a daily dose of PB blaster since Wednesday. Going to try a portapower tomorrow. I think I can get in to bite on the outer C. any other suggestions? Any homemade hub pullers? Do the Hub pullers push on the axle shaft? I have searched both forum and could not find much. Thanks Eric

Omg the starter is super easy to remove rebuild and install!!! i removed the filter assembly for easy access to the top bolt but after i loosened it from underneath.as typical the battery side was burnt away and replacement of them was simple. i took the end off the motor to inspect the brushes and commutator and the look new but used, plenty of life on them!!

Well now that I have started driving the truck again with the VP44 project going and testing. The starter is doing the ole click-click thing sometimes Ugh. It's probably on a third set of contacts by now. The last set of contacts I ordered were the wrong ones. I was in a hurry so I took it to a shop to be fixed last time and put it back on the truck and the gear would sometimes touch the flywheel going up hill. So I had to take it apart and mess with the return spring. Anybody had this problem before? I'm thing about just buying a rebuilt one because the brushes are likely worn away after all the previous fixes.

  7. Does anyone have the bolt specs for the 3 starter bolts on a 2004 Ram 2500 5.9l 24v I have found the part number (04429834) but I need size, thread, pitch and grade to find a quick match at fastener store, thank you !

Okay so my truck has done this a few times. I hit the key and all I get is a click. Just one "click" and no start. It did it the other day and I was able to get it to jump start it with my girl's car. I tested the batteries and they test out fine. I decided to drop the starter and see if I could tell anything but I don't know really what to look for. I replaced the plunger and contacts a while back (maybe a year) and they don't look bad from what I can tell. What I'm looking for is ideas please!

Well... My starter is not hitting all the time anymore and I know the starter contacts are to blame. So I guess its time to make a order to LarryB and get a rebuild kit for the old starter... I'm going to pull the starter out tomorrow morning and pull it apart to inspect everything so while I'm at it I'm going to have the cameras handy and make a write up of it...

Well again I lost my starter fuse at the worst time. Grrr! Ok don't panic we know the drill. I created a temp fuse from a aluminum twist tie. Got it start hitched up the RV and kept it running. On my way home I made a call to Lindy and let him know I'm going to pick up a starter. So on my way into McCall I picked up a starter and a fuse. So I kept it running and towed the RV home and unhitched. Still kept it running then bolted for Lindy's shop. So I grabbed the bay and proceeded to pull it out till I was getting burnt on the last bolt. Time to let it cool off. Long story short I got the starter out and the solenoid cover lost its 3 screw and the plunger was hanging out. …

Question, what is the normal or usual reasons for a starter to hang? I walked out of the office, fired the truck and it was the strangest damn noise, once i realized what it was, I shut it down, restarted normally, home now, tried to reproduce it and it seems to be fine now. I have the truck on ramps cooling at the moment and going to inspect the starter to make sure its not lose etc. it was the damnedest thing FYI, i just replaced the batteries and the truck has a very brisk start to it now. is the starter getting worn?? Thoughts?

I replaced my starter a couple of years ago. I do a lot of service work and start and stop my truck 10 times a day. Should the contacts last longer than a couple years? I had an issue today where the starter engauged and then nothing. Multiple additional tires and no contact at all. I banged on the starter and also thought maybe my park switch may not be fully contacted by the shifter. So I pushed up on it before tryin to start. So I now don't know if it was the banging or shifter moving that solved the problem. Batteries good. Started as normal since.

Started her up after about a month of it not running this past July. Drove her across town maybe 10 minutes to the store. when i came back to the parking lot and turned the key i get a single click from the starter solenoid. I hastily buy two new batteries as it was a friday evening nearing closing time for the auto parts store. replaced the batteries and still got the single click at the starter, i decide to give the starter motor couple bangs to see if it helps but no luck. As it got dark out, i called a tow and got her home, when the tow pulled up to the house i rolled her off the flat bed in 2nd gear and she started right up. i didnt get around to working on the probl…

  14. 98.5-----5 speed. Having an issue where I'm not getting the starter to engage the flywheel. Starter will go, but will not turn over the engine. Batteries are brand new as are my cables (I'm 100% sure that my connections are all good.....now ) The story........................ This initially started out as just a "1 click, no start" when turning the key; it also threw a code. Went underneath to to check the starter cable.... I unfortunately caused an arc because the connection was loose and I'm fairly confident I made something go crispy critters in the starter. I only had one negative disconnected so I learned the hard way ; save the lecturing, all yo…

  15. Hi GuysNew to the forum and relatively new to cummins and diesels all together. I have a 2002 3500 and have been having trouble witht the starter lately........I think.I searched the forum and think i may have found the problem but wanted to double check and make sure i am on the right track.Anyways, for the last month or month and a half i have been randomly getting a single click when i attempt to start my truck. At first it would only do it once or twice then start up. After a few times of this i popped the hood and noticed i had a loose batter connection with some corrosion so i cleaned it up and tightened it and it was better for a little while. it would be fine for …

I have a 1999 Dodge 1 ton Cummins with 2002 engine showing 365K on the ODO. The starter seems to be spinning too slow. Voltage regulator was out on the alternator so that was replaced. Batteries were 4 years old and store checked them failing their testing so they were replaced. The starter speed hasn't changed with the new alternator and batteries. The question is, do I get a reman starter from O'Reilly or AZ, or rebuild the starter that I have? The rebuild kit would be a little cheaper but more labor intensive. Please weigh in with you opinions on the best way to go. Thanks, Les

  17. I was given an 02 QC 2wd. It sat under a carport for 2 yrs due to the young man that it was given to not having any interest in it. We pressurized the fuel tank and got fuel up to the VP44. I cracked the return line and ran the pump until fuel ran out of it. Then I cracked the 1, 3&4 injectors. With two hot batteries she turns over with authority, but no fuel reaches the injectors. I am used to working on 12v engines, and know little about diagnosing the Vp44. Could the electronics be bad in the IP? The truck was running fine when it was parked. Thanks in advance for your help!Chris

I had starting problems after a clutch switch went bad, I was out of town for work and the vehicle sat for a few months. I just put in fresh oil and added cetane supplement to a mostly full fuel tank. should I drain the old fuel and get fresh fuel? First time it has started since October. Thanks and sorry if this is a dumb question

  19. Do I need to do anything special before starting a 01 that's been sitting a year? Should be starting Thurs or Fri. I know I have to do the APPS...anything else I should do?

I had installed a rebuilt blackwater long block about 120K ago. at about 30K i had a leaking head gasket and installed new along with fire wire? not fire rings along with arp studs. I have easy edge and rv injectors and 4inch straight all in a 99 club cab dually 2 wheel drive,6 spd. My problem started after i had a friend drive a load for me, I have a pyro guage and light on guage is inop. so advised him not to run her over 1000 and check guage at night in the hills with a light etc. My guess is he ran it up and possibly caused my now blowby. What temp is safe? Could i have a head gasket failure causing the blowby? I understand weak rings or score does cause blowby but wo…
