2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Some of you may remember my "slightly disappointed with MPG" thread. My first fill-up since then I got 16.8 mpg, up from 14.2, just changing my driving style and installing a AFE stage 2 about halfway through the tank. Better, but not good enough yet. Still have to pinpoint the leak behind the head, not sure if it's at this banjo bolt which I have yet to find with my mirror lol, or the return line T fitting. So I'm expecting gains yet and still adjusting my driving, but good results so far.Anyways, I'm having a slight issue in low-mid 70 degree weather. Not only does it take noticeable longer to warm up, but it also flattens out at 1400 rpms or so through all the gears un…

Hello everyone, I haven't been in here much lately, too much stuff. But now I have several things happening with the truck. Problem 1 I backed it up into the barn the other day during a downpour, so had to engage 4wd to not spin on the slope. I forgot to disengage as I moved and slid it out without enough time for it to fully do so. I parked it and left it for a few days. I start it up and bring it out and slide it out of 4x but I notice that my brake warning light never turned off, nor did my ABS dummy light. Now, my brakes were working, but the pedal travels a fair amount before I really find resistance. I'm not certain they are working at 100%. I've had a lot of brak…

I've been on the fence about using 2 stroke oil...Until today. I like to fill up on fuel when gauge is around 1/2. Questions... 1. Is your formula 1 oz per 1 gallon? 2. When filling your tank around 1/2 do you pour in 15 oz all at once or ....??? What is your method. Thanks

What type of metals should I use or not use in the fuel system? Or does it even matter? Are there some metals that don't play well with fuel? Thinking about ball vales and fittings. Thanks

Just picked up a 98 24v that is having the typical TC lock/unlock issues BUT also sometimes the TC is not unlocking at all and when coming to a stop it stalls the engine out. Put it in park or neutral it fires back up and then you have to play the throttle to get it rolling or it will just stall out again also just driving around I can tell the TC is randomly locked because the engine will really struggle to pick up speed (sometimes I can tell TC is unlocked and everything feels fine). I haven't done any testing yet but from what I can see there are several wires wrapped with tinfoil , I know it has a new alternator, new lift pump, new interstate batteries(connections loo…

Last night on the way home I start detecting a vibration occurring when the driveline went slack. Kind of knew at that point the rear driveshaft was going to be the trouble maker. I found a way to change the rear most u-joint in under 1 hour without pulling the driveshaft. I grabbed the Harbor Freight Ball Joint Press and began to press the old joint out. Finish the job and rolled it out of the shop in under 1 hour.

Starting to get a bad vibration in the seat and the floor that is really noticeable around 55-60 mph. Just had all 6 tires road force balanced yesterday and that didn't help. Which my buddy told me it wouldn't help. Hes saying ujoints. I tried moving the shaft around to see if I could see any slop anywhere but couldn't. Just did a complete brake job also. Could the drums be out of balance? How hard is it to change ujoints? Do you need special tools and presses? Carrier bearing bad? Shaft out of balance? Don't know where to start. Don't really want to start throwing money at it. Any way to tying to help pin point it

Any guesses where this goes. My heart sunk at first but it's not a huge deal. I haven't yet dug deeper. Will find out soon.

Man, pull a 14k pound trailer and it'll help remind you of what you need to do. Recently, I have not been as diligent on my maintenance as I should have been. Dunno if this is something by happenstance or a related issue. This only occurs after the truck sits for a while. The truck cranks just fine, but right at initial idle, I get a stutter then after a couple seconds goes away. I'm thinking I may be suffering from a leaky banjo tee? At the least getting air in the fuel lines somewhere. Thoughts? Just seems ironic this happens after pulling my trailer. I was keeping an eye on egts and never saw it go more than 1200 momentarily. I did at one point for …

Relative of my son in law wanted to try Pennzoil's new Platinum Series oil in an '03(?) Dodge Cummins. Apparently they make a Diesel rated oil, Pennzoil Platinum Euro, and others made from Natural Gas. Long story short they picked up the wrong oil, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, which isn't CF rated and wanted to know if he should dump it immediately or run with it for a while. A well used '03 diesel engine makes plenty of blowby by now and there's no way a gasser oil will handle the soot. I'm thinking a short turn around time, 2500 miles or so, probably won't kill the engine. Also guessing the oil will turn black real quick which might be an indicator that it's time t…

Hey guys, someone posted this on the cummins forum and I wanted to let ya'll know about it too if you hadnt already seen it there. I know Mike has the original scangauge and I believe this works the same way but its cheaper. I was close to ordering a scangauge but went ahead and got one of these. They are on sale through Sunday, I havnt got mine yet but will let ya know how it works (if it works on these Jap cars) when I get it. http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/index.htm

  14. So you got a Cummins, congrats! But are you getting the best stock performance for what YOU use it for??? Here is some info you may find interesting.. so the HX35 began in 1995, similar spec to the WH1C which was a 94 one year hybring is the H1 series and HX series that honestly I wouldn’t mess with. It’s not really worth building as it’s balanced as an assembly so you can’t drop wheels on or make changes without swapping the turbine also. The center section or bearing housing isn’t that great, the oil paths aren’t as open as the HX. So the HX35 was a 56/60/12 which is the main figures you typically look at in turbo sizing. 56mm inducter (inlet) of the compres…

About a month ago my truck suddenly died. After two weeks of denial, I came to the conclusion that my VP44 had died. I got one from jkidd (great deal too) and installed it. After installing the new VP44, I can't believe how much quieter it is now. It still sounds like a VP44 truck just not nearly as loud. My wife and a couple of my neighbors commented on how much quieter it is now. The other thing is fuel mileage. Today I did a lot of town/city driving (84 miles with an average speed of 26 mph) and the ScanGauge showed 17.9 mpg. Previously, the best I could have hoped for this time of the year would have been mid 15's with this kind of stop and start driving and 2…

  16. I have had a 99 Ram 2500 for 15 years... but, sadly, I had to smash that truck..... I went and found another, and I am in the beginning stages of making 2 trucks into one epic machine... I will be around here for a bit...I was actually a member of this site about 10-12 years ago... Couldn't remember my old login, so I made a new one... I guess my beast was pretty damned reliable! So, this new truck has these aftermarket transmission lock up boxes on it, and I've never had to deal with them before... I had the trans in my old truck built to the hilt, indestructible!!! $7000... I was pushing 500hp/1000ft/lb... No problem.... Its built for 1000 Ft/Lbs…

Ever since i hit the deer, the truck has been making a funny noise. Anytime i hit the brakes or turn the steering wheel, i get an oscillating chirp noise that follows vehicle speed. I can't feel it in the steering or braking but annoying. Could it be coincidence, and be front u joints or??? Ugh...

Does anyone know if there's a way to tell if an automatic trans has been rebuilt? I bought at 190K now at 244K with no problems so far except lately it has been slow to go into 4th at times.

In the past 2 weeks I had experience a sudden jump on the rpms on idle and or low speed (5 mph) I can see rpm meter jumping from 750 rmps to 1000 rpms and at same time I can hear motor increasing rpms or truck pulling when I have it on drive; in both cases I turn off engine and start again and symptom is gone. Any ideas..
