2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Picked up a cater pump for backup pump just in case of airdog failure. Not sure what is best for pump, if I should mount it now or wait till I need it, if I ever do. Choices are: Carry carter pump under rear seat in plastic bag. ...Ready to go if and when I need it. Who knows when I might need it, but pump gets no exercise but is not exposed to weather, etc. OR mount it now next to airdog pump? ...Exposed to weather, and I'll probably will hook it up maybe twice a year to make sure still works. What would yo do? Thanks for your input.

First posting as new member. Anybody have a link or ideas about a "back up" fuel system ready to go if current system falls apart? Had Air Dog system (100) installed last Feb after Fass system ( that was installed in 2004) started giving problems. Of course this couldn't happen at home. Between Dealer having a 3 week wait to get in (because snowbirds like me) dealer actually told me they won't fix it because it is not "stock" and had to have work done at actually 3 places (butcher shops) that really abused my back pocket. Wondering if I could install something that I could just turn a ball valve or maybe a switch to use one pump system and use "back up" …

So I have finally got my truck up and running after an extensive amount of maintenance that needed to be completed as the previous owner neglected the heck out of this poor girl. While everything was being worked on I went ahead and did the full W-T wiring modification and the alternator PCM protection as well that @Mopar1973Man has been so awesome at spreading around to everyone. I did not check the AC volts prior to the maintenance and W-T mod. I went ahead and took a video of my results while the truck was running, unless i'm doing something wrong or have the incorrect setting my alternator is beyond BAD reading in at 1.04 AC volts which hopefully is the sm…

  4. This is Copy and pasted from Cummins Forum, thread I started. I even called Mike and we talked about it... This is too educate all the if the VOLTAGE is bad, the INJECTION PUMP will not work. This I did not know, but learned. Hope y'all find it helpful in the feature. But I have a question at the end. Please read and info will help. Two days ago: Sitting at dq, for a few hours waiting on some guys to meet me. After they left, I went to start my rig. No battery, so got two guys to jump me at same time. -After a long crank, it seemed to no be getting fuel. -Cracked lines 1, 3, and 4... then let the raptor 150 bump start run for 30 seconds 2x - …

Well strange one. Owned my 24v since new, no matter how long it's been parked sometimes years with disconnected batteries. They key fobs have always worked and the truck started no problem. Twice in the last 6 months my key fobs have stopped working and needed to be re coded to work and allow the truck to start! I didn't know this truck had any type of security immobiliser on it! My ram is 99 with the sport package. Does this sound like a CTM issue? If so are they plug and play? Or do they require coding? Can I remove the factory immobiliser? Thanks for any help 🙏 I'm in the UK so it's hard work get…

Hey Guys, So I guess this is just poetic justice. I installed my ARP stud kit Wednesday Night, and logged about 200 miles since installation. I originally planned to re torque everything and re check valve lash sunday. Unfortunatley disaster struck this afternoon and I am defeated. Firstly, I haven't beat on the truck very much. I left the Boost defuel on the quad set to 45 PSI. I left a stop sign on my way home from work today, and according to the data log I hit 37PSI of boost. I came to a stop and had a #2 cylinder miss, and White steam from the exhaust. I limped the truck a half mile back to my office, and now I sit here waiting for…

I recently put a HO pump on my SO motor and it idles at about 1100 rpm once it warms up. If you floor it it’ll idle normal. But the ECM has a few high voltage codes for sensors so I’m wondering if the 5v supply is going whack or if I need to get an SO pump to put on.

So I left my truck sitting for about a week while I was on vacation. I try to start it up for the first time and it'll crank all day but won't fire. My gauges aren't working, my odo is flashing my mileage, and my lift pump isn't getting any power. What do I need to look into besides checking all the grounds and fuses? Does this sound like a bad ECM/PCM? Thanks for any help. The truck is a 1998.5

Well after some of my other posts, most know about fuel issues which got solved with new injectors. Drove amazing for what ever it was 1-2 weeks, then all of a sudden today going to work I slowed down on the off ramp at my exit started hearing and feeling this "Bad fuel knock video" Truck is very hard to start- acting like it's not getting fuel- after sitting for awhile. In video I am loading truck on trailer to bring home. This is my daily and I'm kinda up the creek without a paddle atm. Could new injector(s) be bad or injection pump took a $#!% or worse?!?! *No check engine light or codes via key flip. Edit: Update Started the truck, sm…

  12. I have a 1999 Dodge ram 3500 2wd with nv4500. I get a bad vibration at speeds above 55mph it all started when I put a set of old used tires on it. So I thought it was the tires, I had them balanced multiple times, tried balance beads these all changed the vibration one way or another. Changed bead amounts from 3oz all the way to 10 oz. I've done u joints, carrier bearing, tail shaft bearing all with little to no effect. The vibration feels like it's right under my seat and or towards the rear end. The shifter handle will shake badley when I'm on the highway at 55-70mph. Its intermittent it will some times go away for 30 seconds or some then slowly come back and start shaki…

Hey guys I've been having this issue for a while now and I can not figure it out. My truck has a bad miss when cruising through town and about 35mph in 4th gear rpm is around 1500. It will do it in any gear in the 1400-1800rpm range it's just worse at 35 and 55mph. Its not throwing and codes and I just put in a new IAT and crank sensor neither have changed how it runs. I put a map sensor in it last summer so that's fairly new also. It does it with and without the quadzilla plugged in and ive had a few different injectors in it in the past year and all have done the same thing including the stock injectors so i dont think that could be the problem. Could it be the APPS? An…

  14. I installed the big line kit and a fuel pressure guage. Everything was working fine, but now my fuel pressure guage bobbles back and forth when the truck is running and will stay in the area that the pressure should be. When I shut the truck off it doesnt bobble and slowly drops (wired it on a switch). Could this mean something is wrong with the pump, guage, or what? Any ideas?

Ok so recently changed the front crank seal on my 01 24v and discovered I need a new balancer and a sleeve for the crank but now I have a much bigger issue. Shortly after I replaces that seal a new leak appeared coming from right above the oil feed line for the power steering pump. And its a visible flow no mistaking where the source is. My question is what am I looking at right there? I can see a seem like you would see for a head gasket but I don't think the head reaches down that far. I've heard the kdp horror stories but this doesn't seem to match up with that problem. Thanks in advance for yalls help!

A few months ago I noticed a small amount of oil on the ground and traced it to the vacuum pump/ PS pump are and resealed both pumps. Went a while without seeing any more oil until tonight I pulled the truck into the shop and an hr later noticed a 3 in dia puddle. It looks like it is either coming from vacc pump or front main or timing cover. The front half of he truck is plastered with oil which is very disturbing to me. ( no more rust is a + side lol) Cleaned up things good with brake cleaner and we will see what happens. Any idea why the pump would leak again so soon? Look like it’s possibly coming from where the pump mounts to the gear case. Really hoping I don’t have…

After a year of slight surging and seeing this from my OBDIIscanner I swapped out my apps. I also have completely re done my fuel lines, draw straw, and swapped to a raptor pump. While I was at it I swapped out my alternator since it looked like the original was on the truck. The truck seems to be running great now with no surging.........but now I have another issue! No signal from pcm to the alternator plug so it’s not charging. The ac clutch is also only engaging now at startup, once it kicks off it will not come back on until the next start up. The old alternator was putting out 14v and the ac was working perfect, tried swapping back to the old alternator and no…

Alright only a day before i take my big Camper on her first maiden voyage(with us that is). While in town cashing my check and getting Diesel $100 worth... I felt the clutch pedal was sponge like and pushed to easy compared to normal. shifted the same ran the same. Till i got home pulled in to the drive and started to back up but couldn't get it to go back in gear. Shut the truck off put it in first pushed the clutch in fired the truck back up. Let out the clutch truck rolled forward as normal then stoped repressred the clutch and wouldn't go back in any gear. Let the truck sit and cool for 3 hour's came back and it's back to normal now. A couple of odd problems bore their ugly heads today... I took my truck to get the tires rotated at lunch. After they pulled it out of the bay and handed me the key I couldn't get it to start to save my life. A month or two ago it gave me a fit starting, I pulled the clutch safety switch, cleaned it up and put it back and I haven't had an issues since. So, in the parking lot I reached up and pulled it out, tied the wires together and plugged that back in, but it still didn't start. I could hear a single click at the starter each time I turned the key. So, I am guessing the starter is bad. The guy at Les Schwab crawled under the truck (which is pretty great beca…

So my vp44 is going bad. I am having dead pedal issues and its having idle problems and occasional white smoke at start up. History 98 dodge 24 valve replaced the vp 48 months ago at 180k miles, now has 198k miles. It had no start issues after getting warm and would start after pouring 5 gallons of cold water on it . I did the first replacement myself but could never get the truck to start and run so loaded the truck and took it to the shop and they replaced the vp44 with another one and it ran. The rebuilder diagnosed the first build as bad and paid the shop bill to replace it. That gets us to the present. The truck has following upgrades DP fuel lift pump in s…
