2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Last night while going down highway going 70 - 75 my truck started to skip / surge. Watching the tach it would jump a bit 200 - 300 rpm, and felt like the trans was slipping or maybe the TC was. Any ideas on what it could be. A solenoid?

I am looking for someone wanting to swap ecm's. I have an 02 manual ecm 235hp and I'm looking for someone with an 02 auto ecm that wants to swap. I can confirm the anti stall feature is present and functioning as that is the reason I am looking to swap. Trying to stop this thing in gear is like trying to stop a freight train (Allison 6 speed with extra low stall). It's never had a Smarty hooked up to it, completely stock. Pm me if you're interested.

I took the time today to check the fluid level on the side which seemed almost full. then i took off the shifter and what level should the fluid be at cause it looked about 10 quart's low lol Cause i could see way down there is it suppose to be all the way up to the shifter base?? Cause I have no idea i put a quart in it and i couldn't even tell i had put any in it. So any info would be great

Just put in a rebuilt NV4500 with a 1.375" input shaft, and fully splined output shaft. The guy who rebuilt it told me to use 50w full synthetic which I did, 1 gallon of Lucas 50w full synthetic was used. Drove it around town around 150 miles breaking in the new clutch, no issues, drove it this morning from Clovis NM to Lubbock Texas, it's a straight shot but some of the town the road runs through slows down to 30mph, no issues down shifting. There are also a few lights on this road that I had to stop at from 75, again no issues. Driving back to Clovis about an hour into the drive I went to pull off to a gas station and get a drink and it did not want to come …

Seems to be sensor or computer related. Had a 10k machine on leaving a stop light she shudders my eyes go wide and I pull the shifter to first no change. At this point I think it's just slipping with a very light foot I get the load moving with minimal slipping. Ounce going I get 1upshift then lock and I stand on her roaling coal. Hunkered down and accelerating with no slipping. It didnt hit me yet I was starting in second. Get where I'm going check fluid its good shut truck off . Go to lunch later no trailer truck sluggish to move then I realized it's in 2nd. Just for kicks I shut it off rolling to stop light turns green issues gone. Ever si…

I put ow40 synthetic oil in for winter and now when I first start it up the oil pressure gauge doesn't move for at least 5 seconds, truck fires rite up instantly but I don't like the oil pressure issue. I haven't owed this truck long but it always had instant oil pressure

  7. So i am in need of some advice on my transmission. It grinds going into 6th gear. I can live with it for now because if I allow the rpms to drop to around 1,000 when i shift it will shift smooth. But I am not the type to leave something like that lingering over my head. I have changed the fluid which helped the tranny a lot. I couldn't even get it in reverse before i changed the fluid. I put the mopar fluid in.I guess I have a bad syncro from what I have read. Does that require a complete rebuild? Should I have it rebuilt when I have someone tear into it? Does anyone know a transmision guy in the Northern Kentucky area? Just trying to get my ducks in a row so I can start …

So it's been this way for a while, but recently seems to have become more noticable. I live off the freeway, so in the morning on my way to work, I am accelerating up the freeway on ramp, usually mildly, and it's like I hit dead spots in acceleration, adding more go pedal will accelerate, but unless I romp into it more aggressively, I'll hit those dead spots until I'm up to speed. Now I notice it even If the truck is warm and on flat ground from light to light. Other thing that may go with it ... If I'm driving say 55-60 in fifth around 2k rpm and going slightly downhill, I'll use the motor to slow me down, but I keep slight pressure on the pedal to k…

I need some help, I recently acquired a wiring harness from a manual for my manual conversion and I need to see where the neutral safety switch plugs in under the dash. Could someone take a few pics and post them up of the mechanism that fits onto the slave cylinder shaft and where it plugs in at?

  10. Hey fellas,I'm new in town here but I love this forum so far!!! I'm having issues with my 01 5 speed starting after it has ran for a while. The vp is only about 5 months old and the raptor 100 and the power puck went on when the vp did. It always starts perfect cold and it runs great all the time. I hasn't not started yet but it will turn over several times before it starts after it's warm. I had some water in the fuel issues a few days ago and I thought this may have caused it. I drained the separator and it straightened up for a couple of days and now it's back to the same old trick. I plan on checking the water separator again but the weather has been nasty here f…

  11. I am fixing to replace my tappet cover gasket as it has decided it wants to leak quite a bit. Before it was a 1 maybe 2 drops on the ground total and now the side of my block is black and it leaves a bigger puddle of oil than what i would like too on the ground. Not very much still and oil level is checked to make sure its safe! But, I want to know if I can purchase this 12v tappet cover off ebay and bolt it right up with a new gasket? Or will it not work? I Want the extra vent and c ant jar loose of $300 for a billet one.

So I bought my first truck, a 99 Dodge Ram 2500 Turbo Diesel, last July. A couple months later I started having what I found out was called a "dead peddle" issue. It started losing power & not accelerating as I'd press the throttle down. After the rpm dropped so much I'd get the power back & it would start screaming up the road (as I had the throttle pushed down signicantly). As it started getting cold I noticed it got worse. I'd lose power after driving up the road a few hundred feet & wouldn't really get it back until the truck warmed up. Some have said it only affected it w/in a certain range but mine did it no matrer what, even if I had it floored. I star…

well, everytime I start talking good about my truck, she let me down again. Started smelling antifreeze, and saw a drip underneath drivers side, thought the petcock might be leaking but further looking I found a pin hole, but anyway, Does any one have any recommendations on a replacement, the only one available around here is ORielys for about 230. bucks, Just don't want to short myself on a cheap radiator since I do some towing and all,

So I’ve been having A/C issues for a while now and haven’t had the chance to really track it down. It’s got to be leaking somewhere as I’ve had a shop charge the system, add frion and such, and within a couple weeks it was back to blowing like warm air at best. Had to use one those cheapie Walmart cans to boost it back up over a weekend trip with the fam, knowing I’d need the cold air and that it’d leak in less then a week. I’ll be home in a few weeks and want to start tackling this (along with heater core swap) but before I start buying parts, are there any places prone to leaks I can check right off the bat? If worse comes to worse I’ll drop it at a shop an…

  16. I am currently experiencing fuel pressure drops when letting off of the throttle, however when under normal throttle my PSI is running between 15 and 20 PSI. I have the Fuel Boss that has a check valve on the return line and a month ago I cleaned this out and installed a new ISSPRO mechanical gauge with a snubber as I was having similar issues. My fuel pressure was good for a length of time, fluctuated from 18 to 20. Right now it will be at 19 under normal throttle, but when idling it drops all the way down to 8 and my engine begins to stumble as it is starving for fuel. Obviously an issue. My question is, can the return line banjo with the check valve on the VP44 fail an…

So I was having an issue with my tranny not locking up the torque inverter in od or with my switch! But was shifting fine and not slipping at all no other issues! So I bought all new electronics for the vb and a new boost valve spring retainer to have all the parts when I dropped vb! So I dropped the vb today The spring retainer wasn't broken but replaced with hd unit anyways! replaced all the electronics. and cleaned(not dirty at all) But the big FU is when I was lowering the vb two pieces fell off the top off it onto my head! http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t283/74toyotafj/brokenband2.jpg http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t283/74toyotafj/brokenband1.jpg They look li…

  18. So my steering has s*cked for a long time, and the other night I took it to a mechanic I feel is pretty good and knowledgeable. He checked my truck all over in the front to see what was making it wander so bad. Poped the tie rods off, checked balls joints for play and sticking, drivers side perfect, no sticking, pass side a bit up and down but no sticking. Trak bar, universal joints in the axles, tie rod, etc all good. I have the steering brace, etc. His conclusion (he drove it also), steering box was really tight feeling and a very very small bit of play in the shaft. Bearing up in the column had no play he said.. He could find nothing else wrong so he thinks put a…

All, A while back it was requested that when I get my trans redone, I let everybody know how it runs... Since ATS is such a strongly debated company in particular. I went with the Stage 2 trans, and 1400 - 1500 RPM stall 5 star converter. I've had this a couple days, so all I have is reviews on basic customer service and how it drives. First off, it drives great. The low stall is a bit of a compromise, as I could probably be a bit higher, 1800 - 2000 RPM and I would be a bit faster and have a bit faster spool. However, I like the fact that I can grunt around town without having to rev. The kickdown is goodand seems to mesh well with my engines pow…

I have been running stock since I damaged my original motor a few years ago. I have not kept up with the latest trends. I run around with a lot of weight as a welding truck, 10k the last time I checked. I am putting my 50hp injectors in this motor soon. I almost want to stay with just inj. but I dont know whats out there, I have read some on the smarty. I do pull heavy sometimes, 20-28k. Any info would be great, Thanks
