2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

  1. Just bought a 2001 2500 24v auto with 103,000. Everything was fine until one day my lock up was going in and out rapidly in drive and overdrive. Looked up a similar symptoms on the internet and a lot of people suggest moving a passenger side ground wire out from the wire loom that runs above the alternator and under the bracket. I moved the wire and reset my apps with the pedal procedure. I've only put 200 miles on so far but everything is back to BETTER than normal. Just curious if there's any other common problems associated with the haywire of the locking and unlocking of the torque convertor.

  2. Ok guys lets talk water meth injection. I know the old go too mixture is the blue washer fluid. I used some M5 race fuel in my setup, cut about 50/50 with purple washer fluid. Anyone else dabble with a differnt mix? I do notice quite a bump in boost when I'm spraying....

Recently my egts have been dropping down to 100-110 at idle. They drop really fast. They used to have a hard time getting down to 300 before I installed injectors. Not sure if this is normal. Even after pulling into a gas station they are down where before I would have to wait a bit or let the timer do the shutdown. Not sure if I have a bad probe or this is normal or something else. Seems strange to me and thinking something is wrong.

Yet another topic that needs to be written up into an article for those of us unlucky enough to have emissions tests. please add any tips or correct anything I put in. Up until this point I have had a pretty much stock truck. I turned the box off and passed without issues. In el paso county Colorado Springs we are required to pass a couple of tests. Snap test at 35mph and 55mph I think with opacity of %30 or less. ( what does %30 opacity actually look like) A snap test means that the person will go from idle to %100 throttle and watch for smoke output. What I wanted to do is put together some things you can do to help pass with your diesel. in my c…

So I need a little help with a fuel pressure gauge install. I am looking to get a Isspro electric gague and a Vulcan line kit. I know I need a snubber as well. But how do I go about hooking it up to my vp44 test port? Snubber first or after the Vulcan line? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

My 2002 HO cummins had a catch can off the oil breather on the front of the engine. I was sick of forgetting to empty it, then dripping all over my driveway, or spilling when changing. I just extending the hose down past my axle. It coated everything down stream of it with crud, but it seemed to work (only dripped a little). Last summer I nearly overheated when towing and I'm blaming the problem on oil vapor getting sucked into the radiator (I read this happens with the stock setup). I've looked at the different options available to get rid of the crankcase vapor and I want to try an evacuation system. I like this because the vapors stay vapors and exit with the exhaust,…

Ok I feel like an idiot I have almost every gauge known to man in my truck but I wanted to put some on the a pillar so I thought just go buy and a pillar pod right. I did and it was suposed to be cut to fit and basicly glued to the old one I sent it back thinking I could find a better mount with no avail does any one know of a pod that just replaces the stock one and clips in where the stock one did is this possible or am I asking to much

HELP! lol Seriously though. I tried the ME#### "Large injector emissions tune" and she still smokes a bit too much free revving off idle on PL1 Truck must go through the stupid diesel snap test which involves them putting a probe in the exhaust and then proceeding to put the pedal to the metal from idle till it reaches 2k RPM, then letting off till it settles back at idle, and repeating 5 more times (basically no load free-revving it. they don't dyno them here). If at any point it blows out more than 30% opacity it fails. Half the time they won't let the driver do the snap test, they get in and do it...so being lighter on…

I am hopefully putting in DAP 7x.0085 Sacs this week. Truck is stock performance wise. No electronics yet. Will I need anything else along with this? ie boost fooler, elbow? I have never gone the injector first route before but this vehicle has given me a decent $$ hit so I am holding off on electronics. I know the HO pump responds better to injectors than electronics so I figure I should at least get a nice little bump. Worst case Ontario I have new injectors.

  13. The previous owner of my truck ran straight tap water for who knows how long before I bought it which caused the cooling system to be contaminated with rust. I've been dealing with the issue off and on since buying the truck in 2011 and finally got around to taking care of it I was doing some research on eliminating rust from the cooling system when I came across a product called Thermocure by Evapo-Rust. It has some really good reviews on Summit Racing and looked promising so I ordered up a quart $26 shipped. I removed the thermostat and flushed the cooling system everyday for a couple days using tap water until the Thermocure arrived. I drained t…

I replaced my steering shaft a couple years ago with a Dorman part. The truck was my daily at the time and I needed it back on the road right away. While I have little faith in Dorman would upgrading to Borgeson shaft improve my steering feel any? I already have a Red head box and HD 3rd gen T-style steering. I still have a little play left in the steering which I'm wondering if it's caused by the cheap shaft twisting.

  15. alright i just got a edge drag comp box and im not quite sure how all of the power levels work and wat they will all do for timing and fueling. Can someone please explain to me wat each level does? Thanks Jason

Hoping to hear from some of you gear heads out there who have experience with both the edge comp box and quadzilla adrenaline, honestly my head's hurting thinking about Which if any tuner I'm going to get for my truck. My plan was to get a gauge setup and go from there, if I take my local Cummins gurus advise there's really no choice but to get the edge monitor for my gauges then comp box. He says as far as not being glitchy and durable, like 15yrs durable then it's edge, but then I'm seeing a lot of y'all have quadzilla's and seem to like them? How long have you had them? Trouble free? I like the idea of the quad having gauges and killing two birds, but then read that th…

I've searched around and failed to find a thread comparing the two subject injectors (or similar). Both are listed as 100 HP injectors, which interests me a great deal. With an unknown auto transmission (I have done the Moses Ludel recommended in-frame upgrades for solenoids, servos, pistons, etc) and - for now - HY35 turbo I don't see the need to spend the extra $85 for 7x.010s. The true benefit I see to that size is that so many of you fellows with Quadzillas run them. Some of my trips are very long, some if my trips are very short - is there a benefit to smaller, but a larger number of holes? I only have 18k pound license plates, so heavy towing isn't reall…

My Banks system seems to be causing me some problems. Enough that I have removed it and am seeing some improvements in performance. The system came with an EGT and boost gauge both connected thru the Ottomind tuner. They neither one work now since I have removed the tuner. I will be driving back home in about 2 weeks and must travel thru the Blue Ridge to get home and I would like to at least get the EGT working. Would any of yall have an idea of how to wire the gauge to the thermo couple so it works?

Hi everyone , New to this forum , Took a long time to register wow . Anyhow I have been through all the CTD forums and I have to say this one has been the most friendly and informative over the others . With all that said here I go , I have a 2002 CTD 2500 4wd that I custom ordered with every bell and whistle that was available in 02 . The truck only has 91000 original babied miles , light towing once in a while . My current mods are as follows . Quadzilla tuner , MBRP single into duel 4in exhaust , Air Dog II , Banks High Rise intake , and just this past weekend I installed a new Suncoast stage III trans with billet triple disk TC , OUCH that one hurt the…
