Finally put a Bhaf on the truck, but now with straight pipe 4” (outlet currently under the truck, no tip), no silencer ring (does the ring create any congestion?) and a bhaf, it is just getting too loud.  Contemplating whether I need just a muffler, just a resonator, a combo resonator/turbo (Jones/aeroturbine) or a separate resonator (under the cab) and a big muffler further back.

 

thoughts/experience?

   No, some people like the turbo sound with the ring left out.

Why not start with just a resonator and if still to loud add a muffler. 

Went through a similar process as you before. Sold that truck but new owner put a 30in fte resonator on it and it’s perfect.

Like my HX35/40 hybrid there is no ring to silence the turbo noise. No option for it either. If you upgrade turbos you'll lose the silencer ring for sure. That was a Dodge only thing. Pulling grade where boost starts to climb it sound like a turboprop getting down the runway. You could make a BHAF muffler to help silence some of that noise.

I'm running a Diamond Eye 4 inch exhaust on my truck with the supplied muffler. Cruising state is just fine fairly quiet in the cab. Towing, drone gets to be an issue now with 4-inch pipe which I've never had with 3-inch exhaust. Wide Open Throttle she still talks quite loudly. I've got the muffler in the stock location is it made it simple for all the hardware to hook up.

Although I dont have one, I have read a lot of good results from the FTE resonator and it will be the way I go when I get to that point.

This will be tough in California.

I may start with this and be prepared to add a muffler.

 

I wonder if allot of my noise is due to in muffling under the truck.  I should probably get some sort of tip to get it out from under there.

Several of the posts I have read are from folks that use the resonator on it is own. All I have read is the key to the install is to put it as far forward in the system as possible. I would attach mine directly to the down pipe.

That could be part of the issue especially if it discharges directly under the bed and not at least to the side as in the stock configuration. I have a 5" tip on mine discharging to the side behind the rear wheel. Very much like stock though it does protrude a bit further, a couple inches maybe. I am running a 4" Banks system with flow thru muffler.

As in 15" diameter? Thats more like a bucket than a tip. Though I have seen some big ones. Or are speaking of length?  

Look at the Donaldson catalog for resonators and/or mufflers. I find they to be much cheaper as they are industrial, but they work great and last a long time. 

I second the FTE Resonator. I have a 4" TBE as well, and my resonator is farther up the pipe, and I have some steel attached to my pipe and it deadens the noise considerably.

The nice thing about the FTE resonator is it still gives you performance, and flow.

Second thoughts maybe to adjust valves.

I generally get mine online. Both times I've bought them ryder fleet products has had the best price.

That's definitely helping with the volume increase, it's like an echo chamber under there.  I ran my truck that way for 2 days before I got my stacks on and I felt the stacks were quieter than the belly dump.

Any opinions on FTE vs aeroturbine/Jones?  Seems they market the Aeroturbine/Jones as both a resonator and muffler, seems like with FTE it would be both resonator and a muffler.  I didn't get a chance to measure from downpipe to axle bend how much space I have under there.  

I can't speak for aeroturbine/jones but the FTE has a nice sound to it with just resonator alone. I didn't do the install but I believe my cousin mentioned that he couldn't get it to attach directly to the downpipe so I think there's one small pipe between the resonator and downpipe.

FTE sounds great with a 5/6 speed.  I seem to have good control in regards to how loud you want it to be (accelerator pedal).  Windows up all i hear is motor/road noise.  Make sure to mount it right off of the downpipe.

Aeroturbine is straight through, loud as hell, ran on my hemi, had to replace it with a flownaster to quiet things down.

 

I’m currently running a 5” with straight through muffler and FTE resonator, sounds good. FTE eliminates drone and has spiral internals.

I started with a M085171 40" Donaldson. It's a straight thru design that sounds great, but the exhaust brake whistle was too loud so I added an OEM resonator from a mega-cab truck. Same tone, just less exhaust brake noise. 

 

When it came time to replace the OEM exhaust I wanted a different Donaldson and went with the M090544. It's longer, but I like it a lot better. There is less volume, but more deeper tones, and the exhaust brake is quiet. It's flow rating is more inline with where I spend most of my time so it does a better job deadening the sounds. 

 

The problem I found with most the popular "diesel" filters is they lack the proper flow ratings.

I ran the same (no tailpipe) for quite some time, and had the same experience as you.  Installed the tailpipe and it made a world of difference (quieting) in the truck.  


Eventually went to 5" Diamond Eye w/muffler and reduction of noise in cab got even better.  Still sounds killer too.
