Vehicle Accident: Roll over
Summer is here... Please people slow down. I'm listening to the fire radio yesterday while cutting firewood. Riggins EMS was paged out to a roll over vehicle accident. Seem like everyone is in a hurry and passing with on coming traffic which now becomes a game of chicken and loser ends up in the ditch rolled over. I was lucky a few days ago as well coming home driving my typical ol' slow self I'm glad I was because the same thing happen to me I had a semi-truck passing in my lane force me off the shoulder of the road. Please people be safe and slow down there is nothing in the world that require high speed.

So how about 1,821 feet at Riggins, ID? Or even lower yet at 1,581 feet at Whitebird. Even my place is barely 2,800 feet. Elevation this is low. MPG fooler is just setting the IAT to 143*F so even turning it off I'm seeing true number but on warm days I can float as high as 120-130*F when I was noticing the smoke. But now with colder temps I'm down to 80-90*F IAT's. Still fooler on or off the smoke level still high. Actually a little secret if you turn over to 6 Cylinder mode its a smoke switch. Dropping the IAT colder and ECT colder produces a healthy cloud. (Just letting you all know I've played and looking for other causes). This is not it. As for another odd thing noticed yesterday hauling back with firewood. I've got 8 miles of full time exhaust brake usage and about another 6 of part time exhaust brake usage from my cutting hole to the highway. By the time I get to the steep part of the grade and the EGT's are really low 200 or so. I start to notice a haze of blue smoke only when the exhaust brake is used. Then once I hit the highway I see one poof of blue and then it turns black and gone never to seen again. This has me thinking injectors for some reason.- So What's in Your Tool Box for yer Long Haul Travels?
I went into Harbor Freight and picked up the mini's and the standard blade fuses. Each is like 60 piece assortment of all common fuses for $9 buck I think. Still carry the factory tire jack works really good. Used it many time including trying to get unstuck from a mud hole. Fan belt I left at home on the shelf. That part of the inspection process and dealt with accordingly. The only thing part wise I carry is the fuel filter for the sole reason you never know if it might just get you some time bad fuel or gelling issues in the winter. But all these years I've never had to use it. Brand new fleetguard filter 3 micron for the AirDog. I look at from a different light. If the truck going to fail me it most likely going to fail with part required that are not carried. So I look at the safety factor more so. So OK the truck died, no cellphone signal, no radio signal, etc. Your on your own walking. Grab the SAR's bag typically have my pistol on me. If MoparMom is with me then grab the other MRE and water and get walking. If I'm on the highway I can most likely flag down help. But if I'm off in the backwoods time to do the heel-toe express.- Firewood Hauling: My Big Load
Trailer tires aren't inflated to max either. Load Range C's with max pressure of 50 PSI but only 40 PSI in the tires. I figure I'm right close to 7k total trailer weight. Roughly figuring 2 cords (2,200 pounds per cord) plus 1,800 pounds dry trailer weight. Right at 6,200 pounds. I'm not driving it to Grangeville or Council to scale it...- Edge Comp: Dropped from 5x3 to 5x2
Even with the colder weather I'm still seeing smoke on 5x3 and 5x2 is a bit cleaner but not always. I'm starting to wonder if something about the fuel has changed.- Firewood Hauling: My Big Load
Like right now I've got my desktop computer shut down and pulled out the laptop a really nasty thunderstorm just rolled threw here. Several bolt made contact with the ground. So now if I wait till later I will be too busy with working wildland fires, if that doesn't happen then it gets so hot and dry the forestry bans firewood cutting because of fire danger. So I always get out after the thaw while the weather is cool and wet and get the job done. I can split the wood at home during the early morning hours and late evening not have to kill myself in 100*F weather. Yes it gets hot here seen plenty of 100*F here and better than 110*F in Riggins, ID.- Firewood Hauling: My Big Load
Don't I wish... I burnt about 9 cords of wood this last winter. I'm aiming for about 10-15 cords split and stacked. I don't gain access to the wood till at least late May and its closed up by snow as early as mid October. So I rather be up there like today light off and on rain showers (nearly snowing) with temps as high as 38-43*F. return to the canyon floor its like low 70's today in Riggins, ID. MoparMom was worried about us today being the rain storm she had it dumped buckets and only seen a light shower at lunch time. Lasted only about 30 minutes and back to work.- Firewood Hauling: My Big Load
Already broke in well. As for wood yes its all Alpine Fir this load. We've got our eyes on a huge spruce tree back another 20-30 feet more in the same spot. I get a bit of red fir now and then but don't favor it much being its a dirty wood and I tend to clean the chimney more. Firewood is the only form of heat here no electric heaters and no propane. All I can say is coming down a 12% grade about it in 2nd gear and the exhaust brake a rattling. She was heavy. Go Big or Go Home... I just went home BIG!- So What's in Your Tool Box for yer Long Haul Travels?
Here is my setup... Backseat tray. Backseat tray has first aid kit, drinking water, MRE, fire extinguisher, fuses, fuel filter, toilet paper, kleenex. Behind my driver side the back pack is my Search & Rescue bag with more clothes (jacket, gloves, beenie, socks, etc.) fire starter, water, MRE, more first aid, etc. Then the bed of the truck In the bed is my socket set, 1 gallon of engine oil, 2 cycle oil, jumper cables, ratchet straps and few rags. I normally don't carry any parts. I tend to do monthly inspections and deal with issues when first detected and repair them promptly. I've never been towed nor had a failure that left me on the side of the road yet. Ps: Forgive me it's dirty I just got back from the woods hauling firewood.- Towing Tips
Just yanked home a nice heavy load of firewood on my BigTex trailer. I'm used to hauling heavy I tend to favor my 4th gear (1:1 Ratio) more so like Diesel4Life suggest to lock out overdrive which is the same 1:1 ratio as well on the Auto if I'm not mistaken. Biggest thing is not to be in a hurry taken your time slow down. Stopping large loads might take considerable distance compared to a empty pickup. http://forum.mopar1973man.com/index.php?/topic/8657-firewood-hauling-my-big-load/- Firewood Hauling: My Big Load
Well Gang... I spent Father's Day with a friend in the woods cutting firewood for 2 days. I figure I share a picture of my haul. This is 2 full trees this load. Yesterday we did 4 smaller trees for a full load. But this is the heaviest load.- No crank
Double check the starter solenoid fuse I just had mine crack just a week ago. http://forum.mopar1973man.com/index.php?/topic/8638-failed-to-start/?hl=start- Fuel pressure dropping/ rough starts
Congrads Mitch!!! As for the FASS in the power window fuse you could... I really don't lke stacking like that. (Personal thing). As for the alternator just have it bench tested before leaving the store and verify the AC volts are below 0.1 volts.- How much you Guys payin' for Insurance?
I'm also running full coverage on the truck but I'll have to ask MoparMom about the insurance payments I can't remember right now. CRS moment...- Edge Comp: Dropped from 5x3 to 5x2
Like here today its high of 53*F and raining. But yesterday its 90-95*F. A whole 0.0046 lbm/ft3 difference I really doubt the air density difference. I get more change in air density in elevation that I do in temperature.- OMG! Truck suddenly lurches to right
New Meadows ITD mixes salt with the road gravel. Usually truck in few tons of salt and mix with the gravel. This why they have a big shelter covering the road gravel to prevent rain and snow from rinsing the salt out. Rarely use liquid de-icer. Even that isn't liked much up here since the liquid deicer eats brass and copper wiring parts.- OMG! Truck suddenly lurches to right
Every winter here I see 90-95% humidity with tons of salt laid on the highway. It's the difference of washing the truck. I typically rinse my truck weekly to knock the mud off and rinse the salt off everything. If I'm lazy I'll place a sprinkler out under the truck and turn on the hose. This works really good on getting most of it off without getting wet in the cold of the winter.- Edge Comp: Dropped from 5x3 to 5x2
When I did the calculation on this back in the winter time the difference is like 2-3 PSI difference from 0*F to 100*F so the change in 02 isn't that much. No different that going from sea level to about 5,000 feet. I'll see about find my air density calculator again.- OMG! Truck suddenly lurches to right
Wow! My truck looks factory fresh to that. I've got barely even some surface rust specs starting om my truck with all the winters and salt covered highways and mud.- Edge Comp: Dropped from 5x3 to 5x2
Like all winter 5x3 the injectors barely hazed but now 5x2 its a light haze and 5x3 lays down a good strong black cloud. Just really odd...- Edge Comp: Dropped from 5x3 to 5x2
Yea. As of today I had to drop my sub-level again. Getting to smokey as summer time started coming on and noticing more and more smoke as I would be towing and/or launching with a heavy foot. I'm wondering if others have notices anything like this with warmer weather? No ill-effect to MPG's at all but the smoke level is slightly higher now than was during the winter time. I'm also wondering is the injectors changing for like a break in process and flowing more?- New Injectors
Hey at least 12V you can change like spark plugs on a in-line 6 cylinder. 24V is bit more messy and trouble.- Poor ac cooling as ambient temperature increases
Hua? It's replaceable. The whole tube has to be replaced. I'm also 2002 Dodge truck and the tube from RockAuto or Autozone is cheap like $30 bucks. Just release both ends and replace.- Truck Pic: My Tow Team
Matter of fact I got off the phone late last night and have to head to Grangeville, ID and drive it home today. Then the Fire Chief and crew have to start out fitting this truck for fire service. Lots to do. But I do love that Big 400 Cummins lots of power and pulls mountain roads like nothing. Crap... You know... We kind of killed the thread and topic. But good ol' BS'ing of diesel trucks though... - Edge Comp: Dropped from 5x3 to 5x2
