4th gear hunt back again
Dave, I just went through this with my oem starter. Pull your alternator off and then take the back apart, and look at the diod bridge, and then look at your brushs, if they are worn replace them, my alternator had good diodes, but the brush pack had almost a 1/4 inch gap between the two in height, the one pack was still touching but barely.

Exhaust brake with auto transmission.
bare minimum would be a good triple disk tc, a billet flexplate, and input shaft, andf a good shift kit/valve body, preferabally one with lock up in all forward gears. this will give you the braking power and the reliability to know you won't break anything important, and breaking either the flexplate or the input shaft usually results in a junk trans

Looking To Be Educated On Vw Purchase.
If you do buy, get all of the maintenance record, these cars will run but are maintenance hogs, and stay on top of the timing belt/chain. i have an 03 vw Passat 1.8T, and while i just bought the car it has been in our family for a few years, and it is a manual , has about 240K on the clock now.

AirDog help in subzero temps
Mike, i have learned from my veggie therm fuel heater experiment that my fuel temper never rose, so i would think that those heaters wouldn't cause to much trouble when your looking at the fuel flow rate, besides if they put it on the first filter you got to remember that 70% goes back to the tank for heat.

Kinda off by about 50 Miles, move the pointer about 20 miles north of Atlantic City, Bass River Or Tuckerton would be More accurate.None the less very good indeed.

Arrrrrrrrrr mike!
When the truck first starts up, the way it is parked the back is facing into the sun i have a good visible blue smoke, and then it goes from blue to white(ish) to nothing, but the noise i hear is not evident on any other 2nd gen truck i have driven in. It is not as bad as my buddy who had a bad hp line, (complete dead cylinder), but at the same time mine sounds like a banging of quarters together when it is running. thus far, i have been through 2 vp-44's and 3 sets of injectors. Now here is the f-ed up part. As per mike i decided to clean my cross over tubes, and lines, because i did agree and i don't think mike knew how bad they really were. well anyways this blue smoke and the sever timing knock (which got worse) didn't happen till after i cleaned them. Now all but 1 injector line is snug, line to cylinder 4, seem to be buried into the head, like literally it is about flush with the head, unlike the rest of my nuts which have 3-5 threads on them. So with a good compression check, and sanding down my lines and tubes created a worse knock, so im hoping that it is either a bad line (or lines), or cross over tubes. If you wanted to say that when i listen to the truck it (the engine), lacks a hollow sound, and instead sounds out of sync. A poor mans compression test by pulling the FCPM relay provided next to nothing for evidence, but i suspected i heard some pinging, but still im not sure what i hear since this noise does come and go with temperature at times (before i parked the truck). this however becomes very noticeable above 15lbs of boost when towing.I currently am going to pick up some lines from a guy up north to swap onto my truck in hopes that this will solve or at least point me in a direction.EDIT: i forgot to mention that during my compression test my vp-44 kept spitting diesel fuel out, almost a gallon total by the time i was done with all 3 tests.

Arrrrrrrrrr mike!
now that my compression test is done i am unsure what to do, keep it or flip it?

Truck died when I put it in gear.
Interesting indeed, even with the dead cylinder i have no the truck doesn't stall, and it didn't last week when it was 25f out. How much lower is your stall speed on that tc? my was 500-600 lower even dtt was not sure when i asked them.

My Veteran's Day.
So I took my Uncle out today for lunch, While we were walking into the diner, I was helping him I had another guy behind me and I motioned to move and he waved me off. He even helped hold the door open so I could open the inner door for my uncle. Now my uncle was wearing his WWII hat(he took it off inside), and we sat down and were eating lunch when several people came up and thanked him for his service. The first guy came up with his daughter, and they thanked my Uncle for his service, and he asked where my Uncle served. And with that he said that his father was in Market Garden, with the 101st. About 15 mins later another gentlemen came up (the one that helped me with the doors), and he thanked my Uncle as well, and then asked if I was his grandson and my uncle said "na my Nephew", and with that I got a handshake. So when we were ready to leave, my Uncle said for me to get the waitress's attention and I motioned to come over and he asked for the check, and she replied, "Sir, the gentlemen who came over paid your bill for you", and my uncle teared up, and I could tell he wanted to cry. He said that he has never had that happen and was in complete shock. He was still in shock 5 mins later when we went to leave. He asked me what I thought, and I replied that I liked it, and it showed that there are still nice people in this world.

Truck died when I put it in gear.
and you know how bad my problems were. im seriously thinking it is injector design, because the 7 hole vco injectors i have the holes are way smaller then the old 5 hole injectors, and im thinking that the fact it is smaller means better atomization and thus better burn

Arrrrrrrrrr mike!
So i finally got a hold of someone who was able to find me compression tools, and ordered them from snapon online. So they should arrive tomorrow, and im hoping to god that everything checks out good.:banghead:

Truck died when I put it in gear.
guys, i have not had any stalling issues since i swapped my 60HP injectors out for 100's. the difference is that the old 60's were 5 hole, and the new 100's are 7, and wow i've started right up down to 20F thus far and had no issues.IMO it's 100% injectors for me, and my built auto has a 550(or 600 according to dtt) lower stall as well.

How do I Turn off the A/C??
IIRC mike says that the 3rd gens don't cycle the compressor, or maybe it didn't have a lower pressure shut off switch? Now im wondering. because my 2nd gen the truck has a low pressure shut off, maybe that is what mike meant.
-
How do I Turn off the A/C??
the a/c will turn off on its own, unlike the 3rd gen trucks. its nothing to worry about if you keep after it.

you have to think realistic.i keep trans fluid(my trans takes dextron 3, so it works for both the transfer case and the tranny, a quart of 15w40 motor oil, spare fuel filters, a spare serpentine belt, and adjustable wrenches. that is it.I also keep a 3/8's two headed barbed fitting because my t-fitting for my fp gauge did crack once and almost left me stranded, so i keep one now for that reason. I also keep some hose clamps and tubing as well. Why? because 99% of what you will deal with is solved by that stuff if not odds are you won't have the parts to fix it.I have an ability to meguiver fixes to stuff, adjustable wrenches can do alot, everything from bleeding injector lines, to removing and fixing trailer hubs. ive never snapped a serpintine belt, but keep one just because loosing your belt will screw you up in more then one way.I have oil leaks out of my transfer case and rear diff, ive replaced the transfer case seal but it still leaks, oh well, better to keep fluid handy.I agree with moparman you can't start lugging around enough equipment to replace your truck with because then you will have no faith, and frankly new trucks aren't that much more reliable anyways.

The 200 vs 190 thermostat expierment thread.
Well guys an update. The cause was injector failure. Injector number 6 was popping of way to late due to a sticking pintle, and no5 was not far behind. I pulled them apart carefully and cleaned them all out and reassembled, but the knock is worse now then before, or its because i moved the injector 6 to the no1 spot.Either way i'll be calling jacob eventually but since i pulled the cummins off insurance for the time being it most likely will be off the road for a few months.this should allow me to put away more money so i can eventually restore the beast. However what we should all take from this is that even with failing injectors i still managed to pull better mpg with just the t-stat alone, which should speak volumes for its self.I will resume this study come fall once the truck has been redone. phase one is the back frame which i hope should go over with little issue at all.

2nd post. Big problems.
load test the alternator. but even a bad alternator should still allow you to jump start the motor, If you can get the engine to run then you know its an electrical issue. im wondering if the thing even crank, are you sure its not a battery issue, my dakota had a shot battery, held 12v but when you went to crank nothing worked, the thing couldn't even get the starter to run. and yea gauges all died.
-
The 200 vs 190 thermostat expierment thread.
Well the cummins has some engine issues, bad enough that i am not sure what caused the failure, but i'll keep you all posted. So far its isolated to injector failure, but im not ruling out anything else until i can run some tests to verify the integrity of the cylinders.darn injectors only got 40,000 on them at the most. She cranks, and runs but knocks obnouxly loud, and this included intermittent oil pressure loss, as well as what im not sure is yet either diesel or maybe power steering fluid in the oil. Not sure.

The C.A.T. is outta the bag!
blow a tire out on the drivers side with that thing loaded down and tell me how much fun it is:lmao: IMO dully's are come and gone according to my dad, but i think that if your primary use is for towing then its well worth grabbing a dully just for the safety use. and besides parking for my truck isn't to bad, even with the lift on the 99 i still fit in most parking garages, and when you do its worth going farther up or park on a corner so you have room to get in and out. I know they don't look cool, but for load stability your better off. if not check ebay you never know. there is a nice 97, 3500 12v for under 10 grand with only 12,000 miles on it.
-
The C.A.T. is outta the bag!
not to bad, but my advice is to go dully, since srw trucks that pin weight in the 3,500 and up category scare me.but don't be dissuaded, some airbags, and a good suspension set up should take care of that.I've rolled the scales into the > 6,000lbs pin weight on my truck's rear axle, haha, that 5th wheel was a narly ride that was.

This is what it looks like when I go to work...
Caj this looks great! How many guys do you have working for you now? I would agree, but there is nothing wrong with hearing a vp truck grunt as it is hauling a big boat up a hill.
