Billavista & other good reference material
Consider this a good tech reference, I have found it really useful for some of the odder items that I have needed to find over the years for different projects and whatnot. Not really directly Cummins or Ram related, but great stuff anyway. Billavista is a wizard from Canada and RCAF officer who has spent the past 20 years or so posting this stuff on Pirate4x4. Now, he has his own site. Below are my favorite and most useful articles that you guys might like to peruse. When the guy says Bible, he means it. His articles are very very through and have lots of great pictures. Would You Invest in My Truck or A Newer Truck
You and I can start a self help group when I get back to the springs in 5-6 weeks or so. Though, I really love my truck and the body style... I just wish it had a true 4 doors.

He351ve stand alone Arduino controller code for 2nd Gen Cummins
Here at little rock, my truck is darn fast. It spools like it has twins and pulls clean until I overload my injectors. In CO over Christmas, it felt like a dog until it got spooled. I still like my tight converter, but it takes a lot of care to get off the line without smoke at altitude. I doubt I will ever upgrade to twins with a good cam, but I'd like to.

Curious what others think of installing a blocking diode to prevent AC Noise
I would like to add that typically this is measured at idle. I found with my bad alternator would get worse readings at higher rpm and on very hot days.

Would You Invest in My Truck or A Newer Truck
It isn't always that we don't value our time, but some of us bought a second gen when we should have bought a third gen and now are kind of stuck in the decision. I have a paid for truck that runs well enough, but requires work and I can't afford a new truck. The third gens are great, but I don't think buying a 10 year old truck again is the answer to my problems. I did that with this one, and look where it got me. If I could buy a new 07, I would. If I could order a 2016 for the prices of an original 07, I would. If I didn't need a 3/4 ton truck, I would sell this one and buy a Tacoma. However, I need a heavy duty truck for the towing.

If you want to, you can keep it and fix the mechanical issues. However I'd expect less reliability in the future than you have enjoyed thus far as parts wear out. Not to say it wouldn't be reliable, but there would be more frequent tweaks on various parts. You likely need new ball joints as well as new hub bearings before too long. I'd also expect a transmission refresh wouldn't be amiss if it is all stock. The seats will need done by an upholstery shop, mopar doesn't have skins or foam any more. The plastic bumper parts are also tough to find. The rest can be had easily and installed with swear words proportional to the amount of rust. The upside of keeping it is saving the money. The downside is cost plus the work. 3rd gens are getting old as well and I don't have the cash for a low mileage 3rd or a new 50,000 truck. I've decided to stay with my 2nd gen for the time being. Personally, if it were me, I'd add up the parts and labor to fix it all the right way and compare to the cost to replace with something newer. Then consider your budget and allowance for driving an older truck.

HELP!! bad alternator or APPS??
I've had good luck sofar with Mechman, but they are spendy. You can check out the article on them. I would call them and request the 170A alternator I have and would also check, clean, and dielectric grease the wires I replaced with the big line kit if you don't replace them.

Call mechman. The smaller 170 amp alternator I got was cheaper than their 210 or whatever. Also, diodes of any flavor won't help in this DC system. Diodes would still allow half of the wave to make it through and you would be putting a ton of resistance in the system where it shouldn't be. I used mechman. But I think moparmans ideas are also very good. I kept my old alternator as a spare and will likely rebuild it myself.

Gov't back at it giving away everything...
I like your thoughts. I would have voted for Barry Goldwater, or Ike Eisenhower, in spite of Eisenhowers allowance of evolution into the Fact column rather than the theory and process of which it was originally presented. Frankly though, I read about this stuff extensively, and enjoy following the discussion here and elsewhere(arfcom). However, I cannot find the time or patience to become whipped up about it all, as I feel a bit ineffective beyond the abilities I have to vote and pray for our great and fading country. It pains me. If you really want to talk about reform, let us pray and push for an open and full disclosure of all financial contributions and gains of all sitting senators and congressmen normally submitted to the IRS by normal individuals, with the addition of all insider information and who is providing such insider information to the public eye. I would be amiss if not to include their spouses, and I do not believe that this is out of place or unconstitutional in given the word unreasonable when it applies to search and seizure. Corruption, especially in Government is a cancer that we cannot afford socially, legally, practically or fiscally. I do not think that the United States is going anywhere soon. Yet I feel that we need large reforms and changes that point back to our founding core values, morals, and honor. We have always failed to live up to the standards we set for ourselves, but we can do better.

I'd still take Ted over anybody else there. At least he says he supports the constitution... Unlike the rest.

Time to Protect Ourselves
I like my Aimpont CompM3 a lot and it is pretty much indestructible. They are expensive, but the best value scopes out there that I would totally trust are the Vortex brand glass. I like their illuminated reticles, ffp, and zero stop system available on some models. Millet is another option that isn't bad at all and MUCH cheaper. Millet has an illuminated reticle and my dad has had two on some rifles for a while... However, they are chinese scopes and some may not be as good as others. For a long range scope, I would get it mounted, zeroed, and then at different magnification levels, test the accuracy of the turrets. I would keep the point of aim on the center of the target and click up and over x mils, shoot, down and right, shoot, etc. and then recheck that it returned to zero after shooting the square.

All i want for Christmas..
Well, I actually looked up the charts and I don't feel comfortable with the little plane I have access to for fun flying. I would want something with some power for the mountains and weather. I guess we will just have to drive at some point.

It is a shame Riggins closed their airport back in the 60s... I'd fly up there. hahaha!

Curious what others think of installing a blocking diode to prevent AC Noise
It won't stop a spike. If you have AC of some waveform coming out of your alternator, a single diode will make it a half wave. A half wave is still AC. Beyond that, the minor voltage ripples are bad but the big occasional voltage spikes and harmonics are the worst. A single diode wouldn't stop these. I've thought about this a lot. In my opinion, there isn't an easy, cheap, or safe way to fix this except doing it right with quality components. You can go look at a bridge rectifier and compare how it works to what you are trying to do. You can also look at band pass, high pass, and low pass filters. Capacitors are typically used for low pass filters. The amount of capacitance we would need to properly damp out all noise is actually quite dangerous. The one tool I do want though, is a cheap series of AC current warning lights that lights up at .01 .05 and .1 and 1 VAC sequentially. However, I haven't figured out how to do that yet. To add to this, I don't think an inexpensive sensor will help either. Some sort of a transformer would be required to make it work and would require consistent frequency to work. Even some cheaper multimeters don't pick up the AC that we have. It took me borrowing and later buying a nice Fluke meter to get accurate VAC peak numbers from my broken alternator and other AC issue.

2008 turbo speed sensor error
I think they pioneered that technology in the turbo encabulator, but haven't done it since due to cost.

General message to all
Happy New Year to all as well! 2015 was a very difficult year for me that I will never forget, full of trial and triumph. 2016 will likely be similar.

Why I like old guns...
Gun projects that have been about 3 years in the making: casting and loading my own bullets for 45-70 and 44 mag to feed these two... The 45-70 gets a healthy charge of 63 grains of black powder behind a 405 grain lead slug. The 44 will use the Keith designed lead semi wadcutter. Slow going, but I finally got to shoot the trapdoor rifle for the first time over Christmas. I love shooting black powder. Something about the big WHOomP! and the smack of the big slug hitting the target like a rambling freight train makes me smile. Bannerman rebuild 1884 Springfield Trapdoor. The primary service rifle used from post Civil War to just prior to WW1. I found this pretty cheap on the used rack about 3 years ago. By far my favorite service rifle, followed by the M1917 and M1 Garand. 2005 production large frame Ruger Vaquero

Fuel leak by my injector pump
It is an old truck. A good old truck, but it is an old truck. No getting around that. It will take maintenance and some patience to run old equipment.

Random ABS light and weird braking performance
I get to do similar. I replaced a hub bearing before christmas, and during the trip ended up destroying the cable from the passenger wheel hub since the rotor dust shield was damaged and I didn't reinstall it. I thought I had the cable clear of the rotor, but I didn't. I have a new shield on order and thankfully I kept the OEM sensor.

Why I like old guns...
I love shooting steel, but that is legit. I've been hit by .22 LR shards bouncing back. The key is to have your plates angled slightly down, not up or square. Most commercial designs take this into account, but some home made plate targets don't do it correctly.

Hello & Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays
Awesome camper and truck. I love the old stuff. Though, it looks like our has the drag coefficient of a strip mall!

Teardown and Rebuild
When I build a bumper next year, I'm planning on fitting temporary tube steps into the structure to make it easy to work on.

Larry, Thanks for the donation and support to the site and community. We have been focusing on a few other things prior to bringing the classifieds back as classifieds have never been a hopping thing around here, even when they were up. There are better places to find parts on the net, but there is NOT a better place to find tech information for your truck! What parts are you looking for? I am certain we can help find places to spend your money.
