  1. I had a 92 for 21.5 years. I got tired of lots of things on it like the steering bracket metal fatigue. Not having a cup holder. Tired of the interior and the louder than tolerable constant cab noise. I'll keep my 2001 and my 2002 that have nicer appointments and quieter cab. They are far nicer by comparison even though I don't like not having manual locking hubs. The VP44 is okay too. Easier to change than the VE injection pump.
  2. In a runaway situation isn't it best to stay away from the turbo since it can blow, sending out shrapnell and cause serious injury?
  3. I bought one in 96 just like that one with 76,000 miles for $13,500. Drove it daily for almost 22 years. Except mine didn't have the extended cab. Thanks Dave 110 for posting that up..... brought back memories.
  4. Only reason I brought up the subject is this experience with Leety's new turbo and the danger in having a runaway engine. What would you do if you had an automatic Trans with no way to lug it down?
  5. will440, did they place the bearing seals under a pressure test to theses turbos you saw being built? Thank you in advance Bud. BTW, wish I could metal detect your place alone as you probably got history around your place. Ya never know.......
  6. That is so bad for a rebuilder or manufacturer not to test the oil seals under normal oil pressure range. Think of the damage and danger to you or anyone else. I wouldn't want one from that builder either. Go good name brand and new, although I got a rebuilt one from Pacific fuel injection that was really good for around 400 bucks 3 years ago. It was a stock turbo for my first gen I had. It ran really nice. I requested it be a rebuilt Holset that they themselves did the work. That way I knew who to hit with the hammer if not right.
  7. Okay, I'm glad that you experienced that and know about what to do. If the smoke is oil you would have a very strong oil smell in the white smoke and would have a slightly blueish tint to it. I just called MoparMan and we talked about this...... you said you changed injectors a while ago, but the truck sat for two month as well. So I'm thinking Mike Nelson is correct in saying there is air in the fuel from the injector change. That the possibility is that air was slowly leaking into the fuel system from sitting for awhile. Keep us posted, I'm hoping this is a very simple fix for you
  8. Removing the factory filter mounting would not affect whether or not you got air into the fuel system. I do believe the two bolts holding the filter are also tightening the intake plate on top. Be sure those are tightened the proper amount. If it is a brand new turbo that is a good thing as I have read articles on the need to be wary of who the rebuilder is for turbochargers. That it can be very dangerous if not rebuild correctly. Article also talked about Chinese knock offs that are new, that they can be a problem as well. Leety I'm glad you got it from Dap. I think you need to find out where the turbo is from and who built it, telling them about the problem. I know I could easily be wrong about this as I was hoping MoparMan would mention something about what can happen with a possible air leak taken into the turbo, if that's causing the white smoke. So right now I can only surmise that oil is leaking out of the bearing seal and causing the white smoke. With enough oil leaking it can cause a runaway condition in which the engine cannot be shut down, can over rev and blow the engine. IOW the engine gets fueled by the oil going into the intake. I hope it is something simpler than that though and is not the case. Something this important Mopar1973Man needs to jump in with his expertise here.
  9. Yeah Mikey, you better get extra cup Leety is that a brand new turbo or a rebuild? I'm worried oil may be leaking into the exhaust from the bearing oil causing the white smoke. If oil goes into the intake that could be a very bad deal. Was it idling higher than normal?
  10. Don't drive it just bring it up to full temps at 1100rpm for about 15 mins. If you don't have a high idle kit you can adjust the seat to push the pedal with a stick just enough for 1100 rpm. Watch see if it starts to clear up as it warms. It really shouldn't be doing this white smoke though, without the sweet smell of antifreeze it is often unburned fuel. But why? I want to ask too...... after it's warmed up should the exhaust manifold be retorqued along with the turbo?
  11. Thank you for doing the pics and the write up
  12. I'd be glad to send you some of our receptacles for free John if you like.. Says on the back which way to wire them. Real simple really. After scratching your head getting it hooked up you have to promise you'll still drive on the left side of the road Okay? Mike P.S. I have to wonder if we decided to drive on the right side, back in the day just to be rebellious against the Brits. Have to wonder about that
  13. All rights are reserved by the spaced out hijack diesel club .........
  14. Dripley, did they ask why you bought that Moon Machine?
  15. Dieselfuture started this hijack not me.
  16. What I could never figure out is when I look at the moon with my old transit scope you see all this high detail with craters all over it. It's really cool to see, but why then does the Earth only have a few craters? Not counting the ones around Dripley's place after doing electrical work
  17. How many of you guys ever owned a real POS gasser that screwed over your budget and was not built right so it helped prompt you into buying a Cummins ? I can easily raise two hands on that question.
  18. Now I know where to help myself in the wee hours when your dog tired sleeping....
  19. He aims his rocket launcher at my house when I do. I will have to do this mod. Starting with my work truck. Thanks for the link.
  20. Yep, Bud your right, but did you have to tell everyone . Actually, about a third of the miles 45 mph on some lonely back roads. Rest was on highways and interstate 5 on cruise control. I did top it off too before leaving.
  21. He always does that never waits his turn....... John I know the air conditioning works on the floor and dash vent combo setting also if the bottom knob is on cold. So just to make sure; you say we need to put on Max A/C to close off the outside air is that right? And then turn bottom knob to warm. Thanks in advance.
  22. So you guys are sayin' put the top selector knob on floor and dash vents (next one just above the air conditioning) and then turn the bottom knob all the way to warm? This closes off the outside air to recirculate. Is that right?
  23. I think I have beat all you guys..... I made it from Susanville, Calif. to Beavercreek, Oregon on one tank. Yeah, it's only 485 miles, but That was hauling a 3400 lb slide in camper. Don't ask how I did it .
  24. All he needs to do is pour some of his brand of beer on it and its like twenty years worth the road acids
