2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. I recently fried my second ECM. It died in the same way as the last one. Stumbled will cruising around town and then died completely. It felt like the lift pump failed but the VP44 kept trying for a bit and then it stopped too. After getting it towed home I could get both the Fass lift pump and the injection pump to run (and the truck to idle) by bypassing the ecm but got no voltage signals from ecm to either lift pump or injection pump when trying to start the truck with e dry thing wired normally. After reading the article here by IBM mobile about proper lift pump wiring, I believe the ecm failed because the relay that was used in the lift pump wiring didn’t…

I feel special today for having a reason to post in the 24V section, but I digress. Friend bought a 01 2500 2wd auto and it has about 310k on it. The injection pump and injectors had been replaced just before they bought it. $3000 and had a "bottom end knock" which turned out to be a cracked flex plate. So, the fuel pump went out on him and he replaced the in tank unit and the block mounted pump. Ran fine for several days and then it stutters and dies. He bleeds up to the injection pump and it fires off. Makes it about 3 blocks and does the same. Won't fire back up. (He is one of the duller knifes in the drawer but learns his lesson. Hard to get a…

I think i used to have a link to a chart or somethings listing the amounts and types of fluid for the whole truck. Dana 60 in the front 80 in the rear. Thanks for the help-Jordan-

Is anyone using a front axle disconnect that gets rid of the vacuum actuator like the kit from 4x4 posi-lock? Just looking for some feedback before I buy. Thanks

My left front axle is leaking on my 4x4. Is this a fix for the faint of heart? As I understand the left is a lot harder than the right. Any idea what a shop would charge? Should I plan on other things while stuff is off?

Hi all, my passenger side front axle seal was leaking when I bought my truck so I had a local place change it out. I looked into doing it myself but it wasn't cost effective duke to needing a special tool. Anyway about 7 months later it started getting wet there again. Not near as bad as the first time but still wet. I took it back and they changed it again, but couldn't tell me why it failed. They claimed it looked fine. Anyway it still hasn't totally dried out and its been a month or so. It wasn't wet enough to be able to be able to prove its still leaking though. Now I just went on a 600 mile round trip home and before I left I topped off the front diff because I…

I'm currently in the project of replacing u-joints and bearings on the front axles. How do I get the bearing housing off? (Of course I have already taken the four bolts out.. And the axle nut.) I have taken a solid hammer to it, including a chisel and 5 pound hammer. Any tips or tricks that you guys would recommend? Thanks in advance!

I put a new Certified Transmission in my truck. Its the Road Ripper 2000. It been running and shifting great. I finally put 10,000 miles on it. So I decide to go ahead and drop the pan and change fluid and adjust bands. I did not do a complete flush. Just what came out of the pan. I adjusted the front and rear bands also. After getting it put back together, I took it for a test drive. I noticed that 1 to 2 shift and the 2 to 3 shift is now delayed. When driving it will rev up to about 2400-2500 rpms and hold there for about a second-second and half, then finally shift. It did not shift this high before I did the adjustment. On one of Michaels articles, under g…

Hi guys. I'm in the middle of doing a shift kit and I noticed my frond band is pretty low. I've read that you can pull the band out and put a new one in without pulling the transmission. Can anyone confirm? Maybe give me a part number? I need to put truck back together by Wednesday. Heres what my band looks like.

Anybody know where to get dust shields for a 1999 3500? None of the auto parts stores carry them. Also checked Dorman, Summit, and Amazon. No luck. I'd think somebody has to offer them.

Howdy! I'm having some brake drag coming from the calipers in my truck. Here's a little background on how I got here: Worn out ball joints started me down the rabbit hole of a front end rebuild. I've got new ball joints, hub bearings, rotors, brake pads, track bar and steering box brace. The good news is it drives about like it should tho new TREs are in the near-ish future. That should finish things up and make it all good under there. I changed the pads and rotors because they were old and thin and the truck had started pulling to the left under moderate braking. Hard braking was straight as an arrow. Go figure... After I installed all this new hardware and …

I drove the ol Dodge some today, cause it hasn't gotten driven much lately. Maybe 20 mins on back roads. I may have done a little "fun" driving but not much. I am not hard on it at all. Anyway I am pulling back into the driveway and I catch a wif of hot break. Both of the front breaks are hot enough I can feel heat coming from um. I replaced rotors, pads, and calipers about 10,000 miles ago. It didn't pull left or right while stopping. I think I'll drive it around again tmw and see what it does. But what do ya think it might be? Master cylinder? Flexible break lines? Or just because it sat for a little while??

Ive done dozens of them but decided to buy the gould kit to have the tooling and it actually comes with two seal kits. I actually learned a couple tricks from the dvd that i didnt know before. Any oil resistant rtv will work. Ive used grey, black, red and blue. Never had any leak

  20. First, my question. I have her all torn down to the point where I just have to remove the timing cover. Fingers crossed no grooves on crank. 222K on the clock. I bought a cummins seal at the dealer. Says cummins on the part. Question..... which way is OUT? Logic tells me this side should face INWARD towards the crank: And this side OUTWARD facing away from the crank: Reasoning, the second picture has a rotational marker. when facing you it is clockwise. when facing the front of the truck, the crank turns clockwise. Why am I asking? bc the plastic alignment piece is conical (cone sha…
