This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Hey all,I have had my oil filter head leaking for awhile all over the side of the block, so it is time to pull it off and replace the gaskets. I looked in the FSM for some guidance on what to do, but no luck. Is there anything special I need to be aware of besides draining the coolant? I bought 2 paper gaskets from cummins (the parts guy advised me that is all I should need). I figure the proper torque on the bolts should be 18ftlbs based on the size of the fasteners.Thanks,Chris

    I hate to ask this but I am searched out and don't know what the issue could be. The last couple of times out my truck has developed a weird pulsating, choking, issue while driving. It mostly happens when I am going highway speeds 60-65 and gently get in to the throttle a little more to get up a hill or pass someone. This happens when towing and not towing. If i back out of it it will stop, If I roll into the accelerator more it goes away. It has become a consistent problem. It is the truck in my sig line. So far I 've gone and checked codes.(key trick) Got the 1693 Companion code, had the codes read at autozone and nothing popped up. fuel pressure is consistent at 16 ps…

  3. I have a 2002 Dodge 2500 w/ approx 135000 mi. the injection pump was replaced by a dealer when the truck had 98000 mi. The truck sat idle for about three weeks and when I went to start it the batts were very weak, turned over twice and went dead. I charged the batts, cleaned the terminals, but the engine would just spin. The lift pump is working, and there is fuel in the tank. I also changed the fuel filter and drained the water separator. Still, no start! Help!!!

  4. Hey guys I have to put a vp44 in a friends truck this weekend and he was wondering about a pressure gauge or a light? I told him that a gauge works great but if you are not always looking at it it does you no good, so he dicided on a light. So my question is has anyone made one up themself or do you just buy one from someone? Thanks:thumbup2:

    Solder...found a old spool from Tandy projects. Probably 60"s or 70's. Unknown percentage of mixture. 1st QUESTION...Any certain type of solder for battery cables? 2nd got these things in pic that are 2 ought in size. Are these in pick or do I actually need the type that circle the battery post? And already picked up "military" type battery posts. Any help Thanks

    Last night grabbing mail across the road before going up the drive the truck revved and died. No cel rough running or any weird issues besides an extra second or two of crank time while attempting to start over the last week. At this point it is scheduled to be towed to my mechanic on Friday he can't get to it till next week Wednesday, and I need wheels and the pump will have to be ordered. So how do I diagnose a failed injection pump to help speed things along and order a new one if needs be? Currently I'm in a no start situation with no cel's.

    So being underway with the Ppump swap. i have Scheid Lines and a D&J grid heater delete spacer that is also a 1/2 inch taller and my monster ram hits on my lines and doesn’t go all the way on the spacer. Its almost if I need a 1 inch spacer over stock and it will clear maybe, but I don’t want to be to tall so the hood doesn’t close ? Has anyone ran into this and what have you used to clear everything? (Lines,hood,ect) This is on a 2001.5 24v pic includes is what I’m talking about.

    My cruise control light was always staying on, but the cruise didn't work. After much problem solving, I finally took the 2001 Ram 2500 6 speed diesel to the dealer. Trust me, it wasn't my first choice. Anyway, they are telling me that the PCM doesn't know that I ever had a cruise control equipped truck. The tech claims that part of the PCM hard drive is dead. He wants to replace with new total cost of around $1200. Truck ran fine, so I'm debating how much I even want cruise control. Are there cheaper alternatives? Thanks for all the help!

    I have an 02 24v 6 speed, just did injection pump. Everything is good there. Cracked injectors got fuel to them, closed 3 off truck fired up. Took it for a test drive n everything was great, brought it back to the house, shut it off waited 3 mins and fired it back up nps at all. Shut it off cleaned up tools etc. Went to start it and now it won't start. Lots of fuel to injectors, but keeps saying "no bus" on instrument cluster. My super chips programmer can't even connect to it. Just cranks and cranks but no fire. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Changed the belt out about a year ago because it was older and that one went bad two days ago chewed up on the inside even the two day old belt is already starting to rip a little on the inside edge as well so I decided to look at all pulleys while moving and the damper pulley seems to have too much play can it be bad ? is this a common problem or anyone heard of such a thing before ? the part is a dealer only part so far and its $420 Anywhere else you know of sell them if I do need a new one ? --- Update to the previous post... This is on the 24V

    Hey guys for the first time since ive owned my Dodge im flushing the trans fluid, filter change, and adding a ATS deep pan, while in there a good friend of mine mentioned a small upgrade kit that we found called the DTT Pan Off Upgrade Kit part number DTTPOSTG2960347VR. Was curious if anybody has any intel on if it helps or is worth it or should I just install a Shift kit

    Put my 2001, 47re with 2nd gear lock up to the test this past weekend. My rig with 5r weighs 17,600 lb. I navigated parts of the 6% Grapevine canyon on I-5. The trans worked flawlessly. On grades I would lock into 2nd push her up to 2000 rpm and flip the torque converter lockup switch. The oil would heat to 210f while pushing up to 2000rpm. After lockup trans oil cooled to 180, eng temp, and stay there. The grade and load took all the 235hp at 2700rpm I had with skinny pedal flat on the floor. Going down same grades decelerating, I had the same result. Just love that mod. Strongly endorse the 2nd gear lock up mod.-

    Having a drivability problem (98.5/24V/4sd auto/4x4/4.10 gear) I’m losing about 200 rpms at speed. Feels like its losing torque converter lock up at about 70 mph. Lock up is obvious and strong at 45 mph but at 70 the rpms will fluctuate between 2100 and 2400 with no change in speed. Changed out the tcc solenoid/over drive solenoid, governor solenoid and governor pressure sensor no change. Installed manual tcc switch, sitting still, truck in drive flipped the switch and killed the engine but no change in lock up at speed. Some lose in fuel economy, about 1mpg. Took it to a transmission shop they said they couldn’t find anything wrong, computer commands lock up at the right…

    i bought a 98 3500 a few months back and engine oil pressure runs about 70 psi at start up and drops to about 60 psi or a little more when warm. is this normal? i know good oil pressure is good but is this too much? thanks

    Long time lurker, first time poster. Bear with me fellas. I purchased a 2002 with a flatbed for 3k (thought I was getting a decent deal) with wore out tires, an overcharging problem and a relatively bad oil leak. I knew I was going to have to dump some coin into the truck but now the frustration is getting to me. The first weeks I had the truck I didn't do much besides clean it, the guy I bought it from abused the truck to death and didn't fix much of anything. The guy would unplug the alternator, drive to work, plug the alternator in at lunch and let it charge for a bit and then unplug it and drive home. Who knows how long he did this for. …

    Hi everyone I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 and I am at a loss. This all started as a simple lift pump install and I put a fass 150 on and it went south from there and replaced the pcm and checked all the pdc fuses and relays. The only code i get is the p0232 and I’ve checked the voltage on the fuel shut off and I got nothing. I’ve replaced the fuel relay and I’ve noticed if you barely even touch it it starts clicking there and at the vp44. I bypassed the lift pump and the vp before and it ran fine so I don’t think it’s my vp. I’m just tired of running from one thing to another. Anything helps thanks in advance. Also got the p0230 code once but hasn’t came back

  17. oil leak coming from behind plastic cover. I suspect stamped-metal side cover is leaking. Any thoughts? Can i buy gasket at NAPA(cummins part number?) or need to special order from dealer?I thank you in advance for your feedback

    Details on truck in question are in my sig. Video starts from 25mph up to about 70mph. WOT the whole way, and let off right at 3,000rpm... Seems like a big drop for an AD165 on a stock truck.... Cruising around town, and on the highway it holds 15-17psi

  19. Okay guys I'm new to the forum here and I need some help. I have a 1999 24v and on my way to work the other day my truck died on me and completely shut off in the middle of the road. It didnt have any weird symptoms before this happened it just died and now will not restart. Any ideas as to what this could be or where I could begin trouble shooting this?

    Hey, anyone have an opinion on a good "all round" chip for my 02 Ram? I don't want a tuner or the ability to adjust on the fly or anything like that, I just want good fuel milage and maybe a bit more torque and HP if that is a by product. There seems to be so many and prices are all over the place with them. I have been kind of looking at the Quadzilla Max Mileage. Anyone had any expierience with that particular product? I know there are plenty of different manufacturers but I like the USB update feature.
