Finally someone found the DOT laws on gravity fed tanks. Thanks to Pcarlson15 over on CF. http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/98-5-02-non-powertrain/2210985-cutting-up-bed.html#post25696489 GRAVITY FEEDING IS ILLEGAL Here are some laws (regulations) which pertain to gravity feed fuel tanks, and why they are illegal. 1. 49 CFR CH.III (393.65) 6d; Gravity or syphon feeding is prohibited. 2. 49 CFR CH.III (393.67) 7.4.5.; Fuel withdrawal fittings. The fittings through which fuel is withdrawn from a tank must be located above the normal level of fuel in the tank when the tank is full. In other words, the fuel must come from the top of the tank and n…

Well every project I take on appears to give me headaches...I'm beyond stressed . I cannot get any of my injectors to budge (I've tried 1,2,3,4). I can rotate them in their slots but they will not lift up. All my strength and they will not move up a millimeter. I also cannot get my number five fuel line to disconnect from the crossover tube. I'll add pictures later but some of the nuts on the fuel lines are corroded which I suspect the issue to be with that (weird because it was California truck for 17 years). The corrosion spread to the threads on some of the fuel tubes but I'm replacing them anyway. My only other option would be to just button every…

  4. Good afternoon! I'm brand new to the forums here, and brand new to the diesel world. This site looks like the best community of 2nd gen Cummins addicts I could find anywhere, so I am honored to join and learn from you, and hopefully one day contribute to helping others as well. Hopefully this is an appropriate place for an introduction, I really enjoy reading the intros from some of you and learning about how your trucks are setup, and their history, so here's a shortened version of mine: I bought this 2001.5 from a family member who bought it brand new. He purposefully waited until the 2001.5 version to get the disc brakes in back. It has always been met…

  5. Okay guys I'm new to the forum here and I need some help. I have a 1999 24v and on my way to work the other day my truck died on me and completely shut off in the middle of the road. It didnt have any weird symptoms before this happened it just died and now will not restart. Any ideas as to what this could be or where I could begin trouble shooting this?

Long story short. I plug in block heater GFI outlet breaker trips. I don't see any breaks in the wiring. So is my cord from the block heater bad? Is the block heater bad? or both? It was all working up until this week. I used the same outlet and extension cord with some power tools and they all worked fine.

  7. Hey guys, Have a few questions about my truck. This site is awesome by the way. Very helpful for us backyard mechanics. I own a 2nd gen 24 valve with a VP. Since buying the truck last year I've restored the truck cosmeticly and mechanically. I've come to the point in my project, where I'd like to do some top end modifications. Namely removing the head and rebuilding it. The main question I have ( any other information would be greatly appreciated ) is.. what is the procedure for removing push rods? My concern is that I understand that at the bottom side of the pushrods, there are tappets. I'm picturing in my mind, once I pull up on the pushro…

Ok. Quadzilla is installed and now I'm chasing the problem that I think started when I had the Hamilton cam put in. The truck shudders, like it's in some kind of harmonic, when: * Towing uphill (under load - it will do it when not towing but it's barely noticeable) * 4th gear in TC lockup (I have a switch to force lockup and it makes no difference if forced into lockup) * Starts at 1800 RPM, about 21# Boost, IQuad says 18 timing If forced into third and TC lockup problem seems to go away (but RPM boosts to about 2200) I've tried increasing ans decreasing timing at the 1500 and 2000 mark. It seems less if I set the ti…

Hey guys just wondering if the drain valve is rebuildable? Mine is leaking out the top. I did notice that the top cover was loose and tightening it helped a little but it still leaks. Can I just get some o rings for it? Thanks in advance d

  10. Anyone know any tricks to tell if the injection pumps been changed? I can see the mounting bolts have had a wrench on them but can see a bar code tag on the side. Also the lift pump on the block (truck is entirely stock) does not look anything like the one that was on my 2002 when I bought it. It's kind of made with square shapes instead of a hocky Puck shape with, like the Carter with lines coming out the top.????? It's a weird looking lift pump. Anyone have an idea? Could be I'm looking at the wrong thing too! Me like this after buying truck Won't be driving it till it gets big lines and a good lift pump. Need to set it up right Michael …

Hey guys, My truck has suddenly felt like it has lost a crazy amount of power. It is not as noticeable until the torque converter locks in overdrive and the truck feels like a turd. Also, when the truck is warm and idling in park it has an intermittent miss/popping sound, which goes away when put into gear. This sound has occurred for about 2 years now, so I haven't thought much of it. Would you guys think this would be the injectors finally wearing out or the VP getting ready to die? I have no codes. Shift points have also gotten noticeably longer, as it will ride 3rd gear forever now. I have pressure tested my Airdog 150 and everything comes out as spec since…

Finally giving into adding 2 stroke oil. Are there any 2 or 3 or even 5 gallon reservoir/container (with measurements) that gets mounted somewhere and if you put in 30 gallon of fuel, you can open a drain valve on reservoir and gravity feed into tank? Used to mix 2 stroke oil for outboard motors about 3 times a week. Gets messy sometimes no matter who well you plan it out.

  14. I've seen to run across another normally simple task that is giving me headaches Are there any tips or tricks to removing the crankcase vent on the timing cover? My vehicle has the plug (12) and not the actual vent (20) with the puke bottle. Being thin, it is quite difficult to grab onto and it just wont move at all. I see there is an o-ring that goes along with it. Are these notorious for being difficult to remove?

So I've been noticing that here and there my truck will put out a good amount of white smoke when starting up cold. This morning it did it for maybe a minute, tops, but went away after that. The truck had sat since Friday through some 30ish degree weather and I plugged it in on a timer so it'd be on a few hours this morning. Also used grid heaters and still had smoke. It doesn't do this any other time through out the day, but it also doesn't do it on every cold start in the morning so sort of weird and inconsistent. What do you think? Anything to worry about or sound normal?

  17. Hey! ok so ple ase help me here I just bought a 98.5 cummins about a month ago and it has this issue that I just cant seem to tackle and its super frustrating! if I have ac on just cruzing along in overdrive (48+ mph) it jumps in and out of overdrive! but as soon as I turn the ac off.. no problem! it runs great.... turn it back on it goes right back into this cycle of going in and out of overdrive. when I first got it the ac worked but the fan didn't work so when I took it home and got to lookn at it closer I noticed a wire going to the + battery turminal and it had a blown fuse right there too.. replaced the fuse and fan works great now...... just tonight I put a APP…

Hey guys - I could use some help. I've done a ton of mods to this truck and I have two issues - plus I suspect I should be getting a lot more performance. 1. Very difficult to start in cold weather. If I don't have the block heater plugged in I get a ton of white smoke and it's very hard to start until the temp reading hits about 50. This is with the Edge set on level zero. Once it hits a certain temperature boom! It's like a light switch and it runs great though it still smokes (whitish) while the extra fuel burns off. Floor pedal does nothing until it runs, Edge says APP is reporting correct positioning. I can hear the grid heater go 'clu…

Thank you. Your message about wiring a relay in the circuit for the lift pump saved my ecm. Yesterday I lost fuel pressure and the auto reset breaker got so hot it stuck in the on position. I couldn't hold it in my hand. I can't imagine what this would have done to the ECM. IMHO all should wire a relay in the circuit to the lift pump. Thanks again.

What are yalls opinions on opti lube I have been using it and seems to smooth out idle and motor seems to run better than with just the 2 stroke oil I have run in the past. It is little expensive but has better lubricity results from past studies
