2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. INSTALLING PROTECTIVE LIFT PUMP RELAY The life pump is powered through the ECM via pin #15 and #35. Every time the lift pump is energized the power drawn through the ECM causes heat. After a few thousands cycles of start/stops this heating up and cooling down cause’s degradation in the solder joints and failure. Another possible cause of ECM failure is higher than normal amperage load by either a larger capacity lift pump or a failing pump. As a lift pump starts to go bad (wear internally) the AMP load is increased to overcome the resistance. This added power draw can cause the ECM circuit board to overheat and solder joints to open. The lift pump power routed…

I may have posted here before. I have had this issue for sometime and have read that is a concern and also read that it's not a problem unless fp drops. My fuel pressure mostly runs at around 18ps and down to 14 psi at WOT when towing a heavy load. I noticed yesterday that while unloaded, I drove to round trip 5 hours and let truck sit for about 4 hours. Then when I got in it to leave to go home from work, my fuel pressure was bouncing up a lot. It will run at 18 psi or and it just so happen when cruising in 5th gear, the fp would drift up and down from about 24-25psi back down to 18psi. It did this a bunch of times and slowly settled out the longer truck ran …

  3. Hey guys. I got a pretty loud knock happening with the old Cummins and could use some help identifying it. My alternator went out on a business trip this week. In an attempt to limp the truck to the next town I ran it dead. I had a new alternator put in it and got it all charged back up. When I fired it back up it was smoking a lot I had a miss and knocked real bad. I put about 20 miles on it and the miss/smoke went away but the knock is still there. It changes up and down with engine speed. I have checked under the hood or tools left over belt issues and anything obvious. Boost fuel pressure and exhaust temp are all normal. No check engine light but I w…

  4. Alright, first off and for most thank you for any and all reply I receive So I have done a fair bit of Googleing and searching around, and have come up with nothing. Called cummins, called blue chip diesel, and haven't found a single person who has had the same issue happen. I have a 5 speed 99 dodge 4x4 2500 exsb, ts mvp fuel boost Pyro gauge, bhaf, s366, 150 injectors, pusher intake. When I start the truck at any time it INSTANTLY revs to 3000 ish rpm, then drops to 1000. When I push on the accelerator it will only Rev to 1800 or so, and that's it. Sounds awful and produces and incredible amount of white smoke (as in my cul-de-sac is filled as soon as the truck finish…

Hi all, I have searched and searched for this info and I don't believe I have the answer. I need help. Short version: I need to replace stud and flange nut that hold my VP44 on. What sizes are they? How do I find them? Long version: I have been slower than molasses working on my VP44 replacement as I am not dependent on my truck for a living any longer. I went out to try and finish up. I lost one of the flange nuts that hold the pump to the mount. No big deal, I'll take an original to the parts store and get another. Well, it has turned into an ordeal. They tried it and said it was a 3/8" x 16tpi. Ok, order in 2, please. The…

  6. I got confirmation on the likely death of my VP44 and have been lining up funds to buy parts. I also had leaking transmission lines so was going to put in the 47RE cooler line replacement kit, but it is out of stock. How do I find out what the eta is on it coming back into stock?

I have a 2001 dodge reg cab 2wd with the auto tranny only bought about a month ago. It shifts great in the first few gears but the last 2 seems to hold till about 2000rpm and then shift pretty hard. I have checked the alt and am only about .024 ac volts. I am going to clean the grounds anywhere I see them. Fluid still looks brand new, but may replace and put new filter on. Any suggestions or has any one had same type of issues. Thanks to everyone so far for being helpful.

  8. My truck runs rough at idle, any throttle position, unloaded, under load, doesn't matter. Now it is NOT a cylinder misfire. However, it does seem to sound consistent when i enable 6 cylinder high idle. You can hear it and feel it in the truck during high idle (you can even see it in the mirrors. I have tried to take a video but it doesn't really show up well because the truck is just so loud. Now in 6 cylinder high idle (at 1200) rpms the "miss" is Consistent but about once every second or so. How can this be?! The whole fuel system seems to check out. Fuel pressure is all normal. Still have great fuel economy and power. There is usually a heavy lope when cold, then clear…

Hey guys, I have 50 hp injectors and the quad installed but not wire tapped because the transmission has not been upgraded yet. I've been running the quad on level 2 most of the time with occasional level 3. I have never seen the boost on the quadzilla app go above 22 psi and am showing 1 psi at 55 mph. I did a leak check and found a couple of small leaks at the lower boots which i tightened. Seat of the pants says the truck is putting out more power but the MAP reading seems low to me. I do not have a boost gage on the truck to compare with the quadzilla reading. My question: Is the boost readings that I am getting fo…

  13. I replaced all cables on my 98.5 with a set from http://www.custombatterycables.com/ . Very pleased with how the new ones turned out. Trying to think of what I should do with my old set. The terminals are shot, they have lost their clamping power, but I know that can be fixed with new terminals being put on. Maybe theres a member out there who may need a set. Only one terminal had a very very minor amount of corrosion which I cleaned off. When it comes to scrapping any insulated wire, do you get more if you take the insulation off? I have never scrapped insulated wire.

Have a 2001 24 valve auto trans 25000 miles. Died on road, towed to shop, checked codes-none. Lift pump not working, put pressure gauge on and 0 psi. Remove pump and benched test pump inop.Replaced pump, bleed system and have 12 psi started up. Will run fine, actually very smooth till warms up and then hunts and stalls. Can restart and hold throttle but if left to idle will stall. Let cool down and starts fine and repeats when warmed up. Has 12 psi to pump when stalls, put clear line to see if air entering pump ok. Ended up changing VP44 pump, injectors and distribution tubes, changed Tee fitting on return with compression and real brass ferules. …

  15. Good morning Cummins World, yesterday i had an blow out on my 2000 cummins and yes to give most praises to the all time high I'm doing great and made it out ok so I'm very grateful for that... Now i have to get my baby fixed because there is nothing like riding in a 2nd generation. Well my question is does anyone know if the blades on the cooling fan are replaceable withput having to take of the whole assembly.....Two of my blades are bent and the one that is bent the most ended up slicing my radiator so i don't thnek that is repairable. But i would like to know does anyone have any information on the cooling fan. I'm stuck in the middle of knowing where to ge…

I am running a airtex lift pump and have my pressure gauge hooked up at banjo bolt coming off the injector pump. I was looking and Vulcan they sell a big line kit with a tee that I can mount the pressure solenoid. Just doing a 1/2 inch line from the fuel filter housing to the injector pump- would that be beneficial at all since the rest of my lines are all still factory. What are yalls opinion on this.

  18. I have been feeling the need to do a write up on this for sometime now. The more and more I learn about how tuners work for our trucks the more I feel like there is a serious amount of misinformation out there that REALLY needs to be corrected. What you guys pay your hard earned money for should return results beyond what some guy's distance friend thinks is awesome. This is not meant to explain the deep in's and outs, rather a rough idea of how things work and why some setups are good and others are not. First let me explain how our trucks work on a basic level when you push the pedal down. IE: How does the VP44 know when and how to fuel? Info taken from vp44 CAN …

While changiing the oil and adding a relay for the lift pump yesterday, I finally found the small coolant leak I've been trying to find for a while. The right side of the water pump is leaking slightly at the block so I guess it's time for a new one. PO must have gotten a cheapo unit because it only has around 20k mile on it. Anyway my question is, where should I get one and should I get a new or reman. I haven't had a NAPA close enough but one just openned in the area. I have been using the zone. Is NAPA quality what it used to be or are they just like all the other parts stores? Would value some input on where to get one. Thaks in advance. L8tr …
