This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Okay I've got something going on with my truck and I'm in need of ideas. My truck sounds different (more tinney rattle) in the top end, less power, less boost higher EGT's. I pulled the valve cover off and re-torqued everything. I was worried something vibrated loose. Everything was tight. I did start the truck while the valve cover was off, and I could hear what was I think was the injectors. Not sure what they are suppose to sound like? I haven't changed a thing with any settings in the Quad tuning. I'm running the edge tune, (I can post them if anyone wants to look them over). Only thing that I found was the set screw on the boost elbow backed out and was gone.…

  2. drove home yesterday, 350 miles with no issues, everything normal. i knew i had run the tank pretty low but should have had a couple of gallons left. went to my son's house this am and backed down his driveway. while ideling the engine appearred to run out of gas. with a low tank and steep down hill grade i could not see it being something else. we got back later with 5 gallons of fuel, put it in the truck and bumped the starter. fuel pump ran but no fuel pressure. i figured the slope was enough that the fuel wasnot deep enough to get to the pmp. went back and got 5 more, no change. went back and got 5 more no change. we pulled the truck out of the drive way and got it po…

  3. Hey! ok so ple ase help me here I just bought a 98.5 cummins about a month ago and it has this issue that I just cant seem to tackle and its super frustrating! if I have ac on just cruzing along in overdrive (48+ mph) it jumps in and out of overdrive! but as soon as I turn the ac off.. no problem! it runs great.... turn it back on it goes right back into this cycle of going in and out of overdrive. when I first got it the ac worked but the fan didn't work so when I took it home and got to lookn at it closer I noticed a wire going to the + battery turminal and it had a blown fuse right there too.. replaced the fuse and fan works great now...... just tonight I put a APP…

  4. I need some help with my 2001 Cummins. I have recently had some dead pedal issues with my truck and took my truck in to a diesel specialist and had him test my injector pump. My injector pump is fine according to him but he found that my waste gate was stuck on my stock turbo. While trying to free the gate, he noticed my turbo was cracked so I purchased a new after market turbo.Last year I replaced the stock exhaust to a 4" exhaust, added a new lift pump (Raptor) and all of my guages. So, while pulling my 5th wheel last weekend, I noticed some funny shifting patterns and sort of dead pedal syndrome. My friend told me his father in law had issues with his Superchip, I a…

a couple of months ago i made a trip from south carolina to long island new york to pick up a 32ft camper. after returning from my trip i notice that my truck seems to have lost power and the turbo does not seem to spool up like it did before the trip. was wondering how much boost should my turbo be putting out and what i need to check to make sure that my truck is performing properly.

  6. Just as the title states it is just a momentary burp. Very repeatable. Doesn't matter if the engine is cold, hot, etc. According to the Edge Attitude monitor it is not related to throttle position (as the percent of throttle in which it occurs can be different and it still happens.) You can feel a slight lag in the truck then it picks up again. It is fine before or after. It happens about 80% of the time. Some clues that may help...it didn't happen before my hard starting problem appeared. However about a year before the hard starting appeared my check engine light came on and it was diagnosed as a crank position sensor code. The code went away and therefore the …

Newby here. Sorry if I posted in the wrong area. Just got this truck so the super chip is going in the trash. Ok I have full gauges. New vp new lp new apps. I have no white tag to set volts to first off. So how do I know what to set it to? Second it revs like a monster in neutral with 13psi. Wot it's at 11psi idol its 18psi. Pulls hard till about 20psi of boost or 2200 rpm. Then sometimes it does it at 10psi and 1400rpm. Sounds great till then. If you ease in to it it wont change anything. And I can't get the chip to connect to ecm. I get a code but only after I run the truck.shut it off code goes away.

  8. This is my first time reaching out to a forum for help. So please be patient with me. My 2001 Dodge has me stumped. Sorry about being long winded. My truck right now so underpowered it is unusable. 2 years ago noticed a significant loss of power. The truck threw the VP44 code. I bought a remanufactured VP44 from alligator performance in ID & changed out the lift pump. I put on about 100 miles and everything appears normal. I then loaned my tuck to a friend to tow some stuff about 800 miles. During his trip, he received a stellar deal on some fuel from Mexico. From looking at the fuel filters I guessing it was mud mixed with a little diesel. After suspect…

Yesterday I was coming home from a trip to the hunting property. Truck was running fine and then I hit a railroad track at 60 mph, when all of a sudden the engine got loud (valves seemed to clanked louder than norma) and I lost some throttle power. I never lost total power, just the majority. I could press the pedal 2/3 of the way down but didn't have much power. If I floored it, it downshifted hard and threw the rams up, but I didn't want to run it like that so I didn't do it but once. Other than hitting the rr track pretty hard, the only thing out of the ordinary was I filled up with fuel a few hours prior. I had a quarter tank prior to refueling (water in fuel po…

  10. Hello everyone. Iam in the middle of driving from Idaho to North Dakota and am having issues in Glendive, MT. I turned off o!f the interstate and slowed to ~15 mph before merging on to a different highway. My truck accelerated fine and at ~45 mph a check engine light came on and I lost all of my accelerator function. I am 770+ miles into the trip and everything else has been fine until now. It is about 10 degrees out so i am afraid to shut off and attempt a restart/check codes via key trick in fear of freezing to a pop sickle overnight. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!P.s. I am running anti-gel in the fuel so plugged filter shouldn't be an i…

Ok guys got my vacuum pump resealed, no more oil being pushed out the CCV, and got my vacuum lines replace so my heater works on all positions. Fixed the banjo bolt leak on the back of the head, and T fitting leak on the return line. But I still have a bad problem until the truck is fully warm it has no power still, and if the outside temp is below 40 it loses power bad. And still have a hard starting issue has to crank for around 20 seconds and then until it sets for about 3 hours itll stat back instantly. New batteries, cranks fast, new fuel filters, fass DRRP lift pump. 15psi fuel pressure idle, 9 WOT. Any ideas would help I'm thinking my VP44 is shitting the bed it's …

Gents,Have been slowly upgrading my 2500 Cummins and getting it the way it should be. With everyone's assistance it now has a full set of gauges and a Raptor LP and drawstraw. Using a Edge/Attitude but its pretty much there just for the gauges. The wire to the VP44 is not even hooked up so running at level 1. Had the truck for a year or so and know it pretty well. Was getting 23-24 mpg on the overhead gauge in town, and 26-27 on the highway. No towing, running 60-65 or so, usually not faster. Did some work over in SoCal recently so filled up on the Arizona side of the border ($2.72!) and headed home. Did 670 miles before filling up again and it took 27 gallons. Overhead d…

On my way home from town I set the cruise and the truck started bucking and jerking on cruise control. Cancel cruise control throttles fine, Set cruise again bucking and jerking. So I pull over unplug the field lead and drive home. No issues at all. Pull out my Fluke DVM and measure at the BATT terminal of the alternator and was getting 0.244 not a typo... So of to the part store again to get another alternator under warranty.

I have a weird problem. I have lost about 10psi of boost, usually around 35psi now im only seeing 25-27psi.... the weird thing is there is less smoke. I dont know what is going on. My lower left IC boot had a small hole in it (not all the way through) i filled it with silicone a while back, i have checked the Edge to MAP connection and its all good. Any ideas what could be going on? The boost seems to be higher in the morning and evenings when the air is cooler.... mid day on level 6 feels and looks like level 4....????Thanks in advance!

Changed fuel filter cracked line bled system tightened line started truck fuel pressure came up then 3 seconds later it went to zero shut truck off. Checked for air lock then voltage and founds 2 volts output from ECM called air dog they instructed me to wire to 12v switched and this is common. Tried that all issues resolved for now.... Had to leave for a trip so I decided to run it hooked as such truck performed as expected that was a week ago. My issue is this does that mean the ECM is failing is there a way to find out I have never had one sign of ECM issues until now Second is I often use the trucks radio when parked in ACC. and the fuel pump continues to…

On our way home from a road trip today, cruised for about an hour and a half at 70mph. We got off the highway and go to take off from the stop, and it takes off in second gear and would not shift. I pull over and check the fluid, it looks fine, smells fine. I take off, and now it does not have first gear, but seems to shift/run fine in all other gears. I did notice a week ago that it would hunt @ 45 mph alittle. Thinking maybe the govn solenoid in the trans has gone out...I think I might change the oil and filter, been @ 50k since it was done. And change the two solenoids in the trans, and cross my fingers....Any other ideas?

When I left work today, truck worked fine. I came to a stop after exiting the interstate and when I went to go the truck seemed real sluggish. Everything felt fine once I was rolling, but moving from a dead stop the truck would smoke and slowly start rolling. Once I got closer to home I realized I had no first gear, even if I put the selector in low, it still starts in 2nd. The transmission was rebuilt by a reputable shop back in August, has maybe 10k miles and supposed to be good for 650hp. I'm not rough on my truck and haven't even towed with it yet. It does have a 3 year 100k mile warranty so I'm not worried about getting it fixed. I am curious if there is anyth…

98 1/2 2500 2wd 5.9L auto. Normally, turning ignition switch to run position and waiting for the WTS to go out, starts a prime cycle on the lift pump that I can hear, lasts a few seconds and turning key to start position starts this truck immediately, I mean in like half a crank. Lately, I have had intermittent issues where the WTS lights normally and goes out, but I never hear any lift pump prime and the truck has an extended crank time of 5-10 secs before it starts. Once it starts, it runs great, fuel pressure great. But the problem is intermittent. It will work normally for a week or so, and then exhibit this problem..... I know Mike said in previous posts that a miss…

So ever since I had the drop in fuel pressure which I have not mechanically tested yet my fuel economy has steadily went down since then. Have not had the chance to hand calculate yet but lie o meter says it went from 16.8 to 14.3. I picked up a tester today so I’ll be able to rest idle pressure soon. Where do I hook up the tester? The pressure went went down and then back up to 17 18 at idle and 12 13 wot. Used to be 19 20 at idle and 15 16 wot before the drop.

I have an 02 2500 6 SPD manual tranny. Bone stock except cold air intake. Recently truck seems to be losing fuel prime and I can find nowhere it is going. Truck sits overnight and fuel filter housing will be empty causing very hard start problems. When I do get it started seems to idle fine. When I drive it sounds like turbo is not coming in until upper rpm range. Truck will barely pull itself up even the smallest of hills. Lift pump is new (one mounted on engine) and seems to be working fine fills filter housing in under 10 seconds. No DTC codes. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
