2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. So, right now, I have the stock HX35 and stock sticks. Edge Juice w/Attitude on 3x3 (Drive-mode). I have a set of 155hp BD Pulse-XXX sticks in the garage. My perfect-world scenario would be go to twins, but that's not in the checkbook right now. So, I'm looking at possibly going to either HX40, Silver Bullet, or Super B, or something along those lines, provided they're large enough to air the 155 sticks. I'm not scared to buy a used turbo, either, provided it's from someone I can trust (forum friend, etc.) as the > $1000 price tags are not an option for me. I still need to install my dual-disc clutch, and I need to do tire, brakes, and a radiato…

  2. Thinking of upgrading my Edge W/Attitude. Mine is one of the early models with the small square boxes in the screen. Edge is offering me a fairly good deal on upgrading the unit to a CS or CTS unit but other than a newer easier to see display am wondering what if anything it does differently. Anyone have one of the newer models and know the difference? Thx, FT

  3. Recently I became the owner of a 26' gooseneck flatbed trailer. Its awesome having such a piece of equipment. I can haul multiple pallets of pellets home from the store at once, haul the tractor around for side jobs etc. The heaviest load I have towed is 4 tons of pellets for our pellet stoves in our home. 8K pounds plus my truck that weighs 7100 plus the trailer I'm guessing is around 2,500 or so. Just rounding up to 18K pounds...my truck did "OK" up the grades. Steepest grade to pull going home was 5% for 2 miles. Started out at 65mph at the bottom and was barely doing 35 at the top. If I go with twin turbos it would purely and solely be for the added power for …

Just browsing YouTube and came across some differential cover development videos from Banks. With the amount of damaged differentials I've rebuilt and replaced over the years that had fancy heatsink differential covers. I've long suspected that the aftermarket covers effected the oil flow within the housing which causes lubrication issues for the pinion bearings and wheel ends. Moral of the story for me is the after market aluminum heatsink differential covers are R.I.C.E. (Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements) and do nothing positive for performance so those who have them are no different than the Honda Civic boy that has the park bench spoiler on the trunk th…

  5. Found this kind of filter on ebay for 6 bucks apiece, just wondering if it might fit our motors??? Says it will fit the ISB, thats what these are just dont know if they are exactly the same..

  6. Well, the Cardone unit I put in 18 months ago is leaking like a sieve. The output shaft is loose. I noticed it was pretty wet when dismantling the front end last week. After disconnecting the pitman arm link, I can wiggle the shaft about 1/4 inch, and fluid is pouring out. Anyone recommend a GOOD rebuilder? In the Rockauto site, the "Lares Corp" unit has a little 'heart', meaning it's popular. (cheapest too) Should I try that one? They offer ATSCO, Cardone, ACdelco, and Mopar rebuilt.

I'm asked frequently why I consistently "tinker" with my truck even though it's running good, no maintenance issues to address usually, just want to flip the hood and stare in amazement sometimes. But, this time I spotted something while I was installing a BHAF this morning. An exhaust manifold bolt was backing out on the bottom rear cylinder. Had I not "tinkered" with the truck this morning I would not have spotted this and possibly lost the bolt all together. I tightened this one down and checked the others. The upper bolt on the same cylinder was about half a turn loose, the rest were good. Glad I caught that!

First a little background. After my last trip of about 1200 miles I decided to upgrade my lift pump because the old (new) carter was misbehaving (again). I replace the original carter before last years 7000 mile trip, fuel filter also. Worked flawless as far as carters do. Ran about 7-9lbs FP until about 300 miles from home. Pressure went to '0' for about 10 seconds while entering the freeway and then returned to normal. When I got home I changed the fuel filter and then all was well. This year the carter went to '0' again for about a minute or so up in Sandpoint, Idaho and then came back up to 6-9 lbs. Made it back home ok and changed out the carter to a fuel b…

I had to visit one of the more sketchy towns nearby today...where the majority of residents have teardrop tattoos, the property values are tanked and everybody is illegally packing. I wanted to get in and out as soon as possible so on the way out I juiced up the TST and spun up the turbos up to around 55-60PSI and was sucking up pavement at a rapid rate. Shortly thereafter BOOOOOOM...I heard and felt a hell of a percussion in the truck. It sounded like a 12 gauge was fired right outside my window...and given my location was a distinct possibility. I just knew that I was today's victim of another shooting in that town. I finally unpuckered enough to notice …

Boy was I wrong! Was going to change front pinion seal real quick but turns out at least one of the pinion bearings is junk. I don't have the time or the money for this. Plus I gotta work outside in the mud. I hate to have someone else do the work, I could try to find a good used diff. Sure miss my old shop.

I got my shot to install another Raptor pump. They seem to getting worse all the time now. The base frame bracket is now a composite plastic of some sort. Can't even tight up the bolt enough to set the lock washers. It seem to start bowing really faster and looking like you could break the corners off. The since its plastic they had to make it thicker now. So now the plates don't fit behind the existing fuel line line with old school steel plates. You've got to lever the steel lines up to get the plastic plate behind it. Oh make sure to pull one holder bolt so you can. Then with all the quick connect fittings. The 2 fittings right at the pump are wiggle loose right out of…

Ok... Here you go ISX... My thoughts on dynamic timing is looking at something really simple. Like lets say you take your P-pump and set oh let say 16* BTDC and now the rest of the summer its great. bUt now you desided to come to Idaho this winter to visit me and the weather was -20*F. Chances are your truck will have a tough time starting because of the initial timing is too advanced. But why is that a 24V starts easy? Well I think it comes back to the IAT sensor and the ECM making a initial dynamic change at start up time to allow for starting then as the IAT starts to warm up with the ECT then the timing is re-adjusted to suit the conditions. But my grey area is the f…

  13. I'm looking to get a used programmer for my 00 24v 47RE. I'm not looking for much horsepower and can't afford stacking chips, so I'm looking for one cheapo/used one to give me fuel economy. I wouldn't mind a bit of horse or a bit of smoke or whatever, but I'm really just looking for mileage, as trans improvements have yet to come. So far, been looking at Edge EZ, Diablo Powerpuck (with which I'll need a boost fooler, I guess), Superchips Flashpaq, or a Quazilla even though they're discontinued. So I guess my question is: I don't want to endanger anything with a "pressure box" but on economy setting, am I really doing any harm? If not, which of these is best for mo…

I work in the oilfield, and was helping one of the mechanics fix one of our coil tubing wet kits, namely the hydraulics cooler and fan. It got me thinking about transmission coolers, which led me to think about using one for a fuel cooler, fan and all. Would it be a waste? I also read about FedEx(I think) had problems with their fleet trucks breaking down because of their vp pumps, so they used heat sinks and apparently the problems dropped dramatically. Anyone hear about this? Just thinking too much again about how I can prolong the life of my pump, different ideas, etc.

  15. I have someone on the internet wanting to sell me a complete NV 5 speed gearbox out of a 1999 3500.I do not need (at this time) an extra gearbox but what he does have is a Gear Vendors overdrive attached to the rear end of the gearbox. Have been looking at a GV overdrive for a while now and simply cannot afford the $3000 price. EDIT This $3000 is for a new GV overdrive unit, not the used transmission!Any comments on if it would be worth looking at a 5 speed tranny even if it did have the GV overdrive with it? Personally I like the 6 speed box but would really love another high gear to lower my RPM's on the highway. If I did this could either swap the 6 for the 5 speed wit…

Hello, I am getting ready to install Fuel Pressure, EGT, and a Boost Gauges in my truck. My question is about thread sealant on the treads of fittings and senders. I am going to install a tapped banjo bolt on top of my filter housing and a needle valve will be installed in that. I don't see a lot of recommendations for Teflon tape and I am not sure if I can get a good seal without adding something to prevent leaking. Does anyone have any suggestions? For the EGT gauge I was planning on using an anti-seize on the treads of the sensor. How about for the boost sensor? Is anything recommended for that connection? Thanks for your help.

I've gathered parts I need for low fuel pressure gauge. Some parts from Geno's, some Vulcan, some local store. Have a mixed metals in fittings... I have NPT, alum and brass metals. Some with flare some without. Thread locker question... Teflon tape? pipe dope? Removable thread locker? What is your favorite thread locker.

Thanks to this forum, I have heard about the thee cylinder high for very cold days. However, I have never experienced this occurrence until last week during an overnight low of 20 degrees at my property near Baker City, OR. I fired up the truck, turned on the exhaust brake, and went inside. A couple of minutes later I heard the engine slowly increase in RPM. Then all of a sudden it started making such a wild clatter that I thought I was going to have to shoot it and put it out of its misery. After thinking about this for a couple of minutes, I realized that this must be the three cylinder high idle feature. I touched the throttle and the engine went back to a norma…

Yesterday I heard a 2nd get start in a parking lot. Very throaty and the turbo spool up was also very obvious at start and idle. Is this possible with just exhaust work or is this a turbo upgrade too?

I need a little help. I started my truck the other day and when I went to give it some throttle the rpm jumped rapidly and stops at about 1100- 1200 rpm and won't go any higher. Let off the throttle it idles normal. So I shut the truck off and started it again and everything was back to normal. It has done that several time since then and is getting harder to get the throttle to function normally. I have had to disconnect the batteries on two occasions and restart the truck several time to get it functioning correctly. Would this be indicating a bad apps?
