So I've been noticing that here and there my truck will put out a good amount of white smoke when starting up cold. This morning it did it for maybe a minute, tops, but went away after that. The truck had sat since Friday through some 30ish degree weather and I plugged it in on a timer so it'd be on a few hours this morning. Also used grid heaters and still had smoke. It doesn't do this any other time through out the day, but it also doesn't do it on every cold start in the morning so sort of weird and inconsistent. What do you think? Anything to worry about or sound normal?

Well thinking my VP44 died during injector install. Background; Truck 2001 Dodge 2500 5.9 with 302K miles, DS Power puck, and FASS DDRP-02 that delivers 17.5 psi at idle and 15 psi at WOT. I replaced my tappet cover gasket about two months ago and needed to remove the VP44 at the time, looked at the data plate, and thought I took a picture of it, but didn't. It looked to be the original VP44, didn't notice and rebuild information. Restart went as expected bleed the system, cranked several time fired and ran fine. Then about a couple weeks ago, I decided to install a set of Bosch RV275 injectors. Install went as expected, torqued hold down bolts to 89 i…

  3. I have a 1998.5 3500 5.9 Vin 6 24v CTD, have put in a remain VP44 from O'Reillys, a new lift pump that puts about about 16 psi WOT, DAP 100HP injectors, and have done a block test and still cannot manage to figure out why i have white smoke at WOT. It blows a puff of white on a cold morning but after reaching OT my programmer kicks on and it'll be black for a while then it seems as if randomly it'll turn white, then if i turn my programmer off it still smokes white. I have no idea from here. Any ideas?

Working on a friends tail light problem. Get it fixed and the next day he starts for home and gets white smoke missing then dies. I am thinking the connector to the rear and also fuel pump in tank could be problem. This morning changed the fuel filter. Cracked the fuel line at the VP and hit the key. Tank in pump ran with pressure and fuel squirting from loose fitting. Has had eng light on for 6 months. Checked code using key sw. Got only P 1693 then P end code. Nothing else. Did it again got same thing?? I have a code reader. will it do any better? This is a farm truck running farm diesel from a bulk tank. No gauges! 3 prior VPs. Maybe 70,000 on this one. 475,000 on tr…

But the temp has been colder the last few days. Thanks for any and all help!

  6. I need some advice from someone smarter than myself on what may cause my issue. I am getting white smoke under acceleration until the truck gets to operating temp then it goes away completely and I can't make it smoke. No smoke whatsoever at idle just a puff of black just as it starts. I just recently replaced a head gasket so EVERYTHING has been taken off my truck recently and I'm not sure where to begin to start if I have a connection that may be fouled up. One thing I do need to do after reading some of Mopar's articles on injector and fuel line reinstalling after the change and I have realized I need to first take the tubes back out and clean the tips of them as well …

Greetings. New subscriber, so maybe point me in the right direction please. Very intermittent throttle drop out out at 1800 RPM's (randomly every other month), check engine light: Code was MAPP sensor, TPS replaced 8 years ago with upgraded sensor and pigtail. Truck starts with no problems and runs fine, but then any push on accelerator produces clouds of white smoke and rough running sound. When beginning to drive there is low power and it doesn't run "right". After 5-10 minutes easy driving everything seems normal and it runs good with good boost (42#+ if I hammer on it). I am taking it to the shop on Wed April 27 to have new MAPP sensor installed and …

  12. I am looking for a good quality magnetic oil pan drain plug for my wife's 2001. I have one of the Geno's Garage magnetic oil drain plugs on my truck which is a very good plug but the magnet is kinda weak. It does OK. Does anyone know of any other good quality magnetic oil pan drain plugs? I ordered one from Power **** Racing on ebay. The magnet is really strong but the plug is not the right size and is junk. Any recommendations appreciated. Thanks!

  14. You are never going to believe it, the vp44 CAN be "rebuilt" in your shop/garage/lean-to!! Since my pump went out I have been feverishly searching for a cheap fix or the at least the cheapest rebuild I could possibly find……how does about $40.00 sound?!?! I have researched this in depth and found the common problems that cause vp44 failure, most of them are manufacturing process related (burrs left on metal components, pump case wearing through due to lack of lubrication, and parts seizing due to improper lubrication) Once the components have worn down they seize and of course the pump stops working, the less common failure is the electrical pack solders become weak and lo…

Well, this morning after changing my fuel filters i was in the process of jumping power from the battery to the plug for my raptor to bleed the air out of the system when i had a brain fart and grabbed the plug for my deleted fuel heater instead. There was a spark and immediately put the CEL on. So i grabbed my smarty and checked the codes...p0222 idle validation...p0113 IAT sensor voltage high p0118 ECT sensor voltage highp0238 MAP sensor highp01693 companion code I figured i just blew those sensors so i went and picked up a new ect, map, and iat sensor and installed them, cleared the codes with my smarty and lo and behold those codes pop back up again. So in desperatio…

I've been reading that the Cummins engines in our trucks, when idling in cold weather, get buildup in the cylinders from an incomplete fuel burn; causing all kinds of mayhem in the motor. I was curious as to what's different with these engines? I ask this since all the other diesel engines I'm around on a daily basis (pulp truck , skidder, excavator, ect) will run all day long, with lots of idling in that time span, and yet it doesn't seem to bother them any? Looking for some clarification.

  18. Here you go gang... I got done with the manifold gasket job on the 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 a while back and knew I needed to change coolant. The coolant was like 4 years old being I only drove the truck like 3-4K a year. So why change coolant when the truck just sits. Well here is my thermostat housing... As you'll see the housing is starting to rot away from the pH imbalance of the coolant and it attacking the metals. So needless to say I got the cooling system on the 1996 Dodge 1500 flushed out and fresh coolant and tap water back in the radiator. Call me crazy but it works fine...

I'm asked frequently why I consistently "tinker" with my truck even though it's running good, no maintenance issues to address usually, just want to flip the hood and stare in amazement sometimes. But, this time I spotted something while I was installing a BHAF this morning. The lower exhaust manifold bolt on the rear cylinder was backing out! I grabbed the tools and tightened her up and checked the rest. The upper bolt on the rear cylinder was about half a turn loose as well. All the others were fine. Glad I caught that!
