2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

i have the AD 150 with a straw. i have been running 17 psi all the time.all the way to empty. just lately i noticed that now it drops pressure when comming to a hard stop at 1/4 tank of fuel. like to 5 or less just for a sec the right back up to 17psi. I did just put a needle valve on the line to the gauge, and it's open a little. can this valve be causing my problem? and is it ok to drop pressure for a sec or two? i going to open the valve full open untill i get fuel tomarrow.

In trying to get my truck setup so it doesn’t smoke like a train, I finally pulled the plug and made an order at DAP and got a Quadzilla. When I bought my truck, the PO had installed an XDP HO Extreme injection pump. My understanding is it’s equivalent to the hot rod VP. Anyways, How should I setup the Quadzilla? More truck info below. 1999 Ram 2500 5 speed NV4500 HO extreme injection pump 100 HP injectors, supposedly BD Diesel Super B Killer turbo. 61/76/14 3.55 gears 315/75r16 tires i also got 150hp injectors set at 320 bar I haven’t installed yet. I assume I’d have to change the timing afterwards. I know…

Compressor Efficiency and More by Khiem Dinh Compressor efficiency is a term thrown around whenever people mention forced induction, but what does it really mean? How does it affect an engine's performance? And what role does air temperature play in all of this? The cool thing about thermodynamics is that we can explain effects with equations. Using basic compressor equations, we'll put some numbers to the affects of air temperature and compressor efficiency on co…

Finally got that damn thing from sucking down my main batteries. I had a good deep cycle laying around so I threw it in (yeah so I have 5 batteries now ) and took the grid heater positive wire and wired it directly to the deep cycle. I put a relay in and hooked it up so that when it is normally closed (not energized) it closes the path of the positive from the main batteries to a wire for the deep cycle positive, that way it will charge any time the grid heater is not on. When the grid heater turns on, it also energizes the relay and opens the charging path so that the battery is connected to the grids and nothing else. After the grids turn off, the relay turns off an…

  7. Hey guys, Two things... I currently have a Raptor 100 on the truck with the full half inch hoses all the way from the tank to the VP. If it dies (not saying "when" because I'm trying to be positive), I eventually want to replace it with a FASS 95.. so I'm curious if I can just buy the pump and not the whole "kit". Does the FASS use the same quick connect fittings? In other words, will it just be a matter of unplugging/unbolting the Raptor and bolting/plugging in the FASS and running the new power lines? Also.. I found a guy not too far away that's selling an older Edge EZ for $200obo - specifically for the 2001 model year (says right on the sticker). I do …

I have a 1998.5 3500 24 valve with an Airdog, fairly new VP44, and Edge chip. I had my nv4500 rebuilt recently and ever since when I'm driving I lose power for a split second before it goes back to normal. The engine does this even in neutral if I ramp up the RPMs slowly or rapidly. Any help would be great.

Will a failing VP44 draw more voltage under load? I discovered last Tuesday that one of my batteries had failed, so I replaced both with 2 brand new batteries. After installing the batteries, the truck starts hard when cold or sitting for 8 hours or more, and runs incredibly rich. This morning I noticed my fuel pressure drop from 18psi to 16psi, and on my way home the pressure would drop from 15psi at idle to 5 under load then come back up to 13ish. FASS said to check my VP44 overflow valve, that it sounds like its returning more fuel than using. I'm assuming the pumps original to the truck and has 160k on it, could it be seals are worn out and leaking fuel past causing…

I tow, and plow and sometimes the truck might idle for a few hours at a time while out on a job. I have DAP 7x.010 SAC injectors that at the time were new body injectors circa 2013 and they have over 200k. I pulled one for a pop test and it was dripping slowly when closed so it's time for a replacement, also the truck is showing tired injectors by idle hazingl more and more with time. I'm hoping to get some expert opinions on the matter to replace. I have a truck built to make power while towing.Quad v2, converter is a little looser stall than stock, I've gone down from a s364 to an s362 that behaves well. SOVP, the rest is pretty normal compone…

I've got 20k on my oil change since the Frantz bypass filter install with paper change every 1,500. Wanting to have a sample tested. What's the procedure for obtaining a sample? I've seen recommendations in the past for testing facilities. But maybe for the discussion of taking a sample and sending it off for testing it would be best to combine them here.

Heydumb question - but curious on ideasOne of the bolts at back of my transfercase is leaking more ATF. Its one of the black hex bolts that holds the tail housing (where rear drive shaft goes into) to the main part of the TC. So what are easy fixes options ?? Was thinking1) New bolt ....... *shrug* might provide a better seal2) Some gasket maker ?? But thinking most will come out when I torque it down ? 3) Some thread tape ?? Seems to be a good seal elsewhere with no leaks .......

Well, finally got the Raptor 150 installed, Vulcan big line kit, and my fuel pressure gauge. Idling and cruising down the highway fuel PSI is at 17, and WOT it drops to 13. Truck runs better and believe it or not it is even quieter!!! Now on with the rest of the mods!!!

  16. Just curious what people are running as a majority. I heard when I owned a 7.3l that the 6637 was the preferred filter to use for two reasons. One, it was cheap and two,it had a metal mesh on OD AND ID. Many of the guys claimed it was les chance of filter getting wet, tearing and getting sucked into the turbo. Bad news. I just picked up the recommended 2790 which is a bigger diameter 10.5" versus 6637 which is 8.5", but it does not have a metal mesh I'd. Just paper on I'd and mesh only on od. Just curious if anyone has seen any problems with the 2790 collapsing. I'd also like to know what cfm each of them flow if anybody knows! Thanks.

I can assume it could have frozen (rusted linkage) or a relax/vaccuum issue. Ideas to check? I'm getting light on the powered dash switch, so its alittle more than a grounding issue. Can I disconnect linkage and action it loose?

Howdy guys, it’s been some time since I was at all active online, but hopped on to see what was new and figured I’d let y’all know my current project. About a year ago I bought the shawty, it’s a 1995 rcsb. did the basic round of mods, maxed 180 pump, injectors, a s362, and a transmission that could hold it. Did 540hp on that setup that setup was a blast to daily drive, but I wanted to play with something new, so I decided to common rail swap it with some pretty good size wirly boiz all this was done in a rush to try and make it to the ATS gauntlet challenge, first fire was a week before the competition. …

  20. I have a 1999 dodge ram 2500 with 5.9. I had purchased a quadzilla tuner and I want to use the fuel pressure monitoring with the programmer. Does anyone know a part number or where I can get a sending unit that will work with this? Also my low fuel pressure warning kit I installed stopped working. I grounded the wire that goes to the pressure switch and it lights so I know the switch is bad. I just need the switch but can only find new kits. thanks
