2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

  1. Just as the title suggests. What tools do you keep in your truck 24/7? My list is ever changing but right now I have: Tarp Ratchet straps Stretch Net Vice Grip Claw Hammer Pry bar Belt tensioner tool (and belt) Small ratchet kit Adjustable wrench Channel lock pliers Screwdrivers Zip ties Tow strap Bottle jack I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have used all of these tools for everything conceivable and some things I never imagined. What do you keep in your truck?

  2. So here recently my trucks been loosing prime/fuel pressure after its been shut off and sits for a few hours, normally overnight. The other day it did in the 4 hours from when I got to work and left for lunch. This really bothered me, so after lunch I crawled all over her and checked all fittings to the fuel system I could get to. With no luck of something loose, I was not happy and dreading it bein internal. Pulled the dipstick and with 2k on this oil change, I was maybe a qt over full. This tells me that Ive got an injector thats leaking down after shut off. Truck runs and drives fine, no extra smoke at idle or drive, nor does it run any hotter. So finally to my …

My 2000 has a non wastegated HX35. I rarely see over 10-12 psi, if I’m loaded heavy I might see 18-19. I’m gonna dig in and see where my issues is (test for boost leaks, adjust the Smarty). Anyone running a true HX35 like this? Was this even available on a 24V auto in 2000? I’ve never seen over 20 psi loaded down at wot. Feel like I’m missing some cheap performance somewhere. Stock injectors. Raptor LP.

Ok guys I have 315-75's on my truck and I believe that my mph is off about 13% so if i am trying to calcuate my correct mpg would i take my total mpg' per tank and multiply by 13%??? :shrug:If i am thinking right this should give me an accurate mpg. Any help is much appreciated.

  5. Soo I've recently picked up a ii silverbullet 64/74 from cousin who decided to bark her one to many times lol, from my research so far I've found rebuild kit for thrust bearings, etc but I'm having a problem trying to find a compressor wheel and turbine for it. Thanks for reading and any help in advance

I completely forgot about this program until tonight when I was perusing the articles on quadzilla. I tried to open it with excel on my pc, but since I haven't paid for it, it won't let me use all the features. Or any of them really. I tried using the online excel program, and it won't even load there, something about Nick.skt (or something like that) won't load. Are any of you still using this, and how do I make it work without paying $99 for the damn license? I have tried a program called LibreOffice, and it will load, but again, the buttons won't work, and it won't load any of the exported tunes I've emailed myself. Thanks again for the help…

hey all, i'm new here. i'm sure i already know the answer to this, but can an edge juice used on a 2007 5.9l be at all converted/reused/reprogrammed to work on my 2001.5?thanks

About 2 years ago I bought a 1999 2500 with a 5.9L 24v Cummins. The PO claimed that he "had a tune put on it" but couldn't be more specific. It definitely makes more power and smoke than the similar stock trucks I've driven and there's no sign of any piggyback tuners on the truck so presumably he used a Smarty tuner or similar. The only other mod that I know of is the Airdog Raptor lift pump that I installed but with a little over 200k who knows what injectors are in it etc. I mostly use this truck as a road trip vehicle both for work and camping and it usually has a small (1800lb) pop-up truck camper on the back. This is a mountainous area with lots of long steep gr…

Hello Guys, This is my first time posting but Ive been a long time lurker. Im about to drop a 24 valve vp44 engine into my 2007 F550 superduty I'll probably start pulling the engines in Febuary. Ive already started to order parts for the swap but I would appreciate any help in pointing me in the right direction When It comes to the Tunner, turbo, injectors.... A little info on the chassis and what it will be doing...The Chassis is a 2007 F550 with a manual ZF-6 transmission 4x4. It is Roll-off truck that I haul dumpsters with and Ive hauled loads up to 10,000 - 12000lbs but the usual is around 8000lbs... Im loc…

  12. ***I see this may not be posted in the correct subforum, probably should be in the Quadzilla vendor area but not sure how to delete and move it, mods?*** Hello all, I've been fiddling with tuning on my truck ever since I did the initial build with DDP 150s and a stage 1 GT3782R turbo I got cheap on eBay and fabbed into the truck. Loved the turbo sound but blew it up recently as it was on borrowed time at 40psi with 150s. I just did another round of work on it (build list below) and am at a loss on where to start with tuning as none of the tunes in the tune library run well at all on the truck. I've read and reread a ton of posts on tuni…

Ok, so I finally got my truck back on the road after having to get another injection pump. Hopefully nothing else major goes wrong. At this point, I've replaced every major thing that could go wrong (minus the pcm and ecm). But I digress. My latest problem is whenever I drive the truck, if I don't have the tuner set on a higher level, it bucks, sputters, and blows white smoke. I'm 95% sure it's tuning related. I'm getting great fuel pressure and flow, and my injectors have all new tips (I rebuilt and pop tested them myself at school), and seals. I'm not sure if my specs are in my profile, but here they are again: FASS 150gph pum…

So I was doing some checking on my boost pressure and was see what the turbo would produce. I’m producing around 43lbs according to the manual gauge and 37 acorrding to the quad at wot. I then clamped the waste gate line and there was no increase. The turbo is maybe a month old now. So my questions are, with the stock injectors is that all I’m going to see if I’m not put out enough fuel? My next question is by crimping the waste gate off shouldnt I see more boost? I talked with bd diesel today and the guy said that with the turbo I have the optimal operating range is is 37-45 lbs. last question for now is, is there something wrong with the turbo if I can’t produce any mor…

  15. First off what are the benefits, if any, is there to a turbo blanket? I havent looked at all to see if there was a previous thread on turbo blankets but I was wanting to know if they're a good investment for $25 off amazon. Every kid in the country with a Honda Civic thats turbocharged has one so I didnt know if it actually helped or was just for looks. If it does help though, would it help performance to have one AND MoparMan's BHAF shield thingy he made out of a License plate or whatever its made out of? Anything helps as always. Thanks!!!

Does anyone have good knowledge of what the turbo angles should be? As best as I could estimate on my truck with the current turbo installed (due to rust, certain components will be destroyed upon removal - and I don't have a spare vehicle right now) it seems: the exhaust manifold mounting flange is 48 degrees (measured from horizontal). EDIT: May be closer to 50 degrees based on my truck, after removing turbo for better measurement. The compressor outlet is "around" 20 degrees from horizontal. EDIT: I'd say I would up more around 25 degrees or a little steeper to keep everything very well aligned and no stress on the rubber boot. I would l…

  17. The author of this article is a turbo engineer for Garrett. I'm submitting it because it is an informative read and therefore is beneficial to the community. Enjoy. Compressor Efficiency and More by Khiem Dinh Compressor efficiency is a term thrown around whenever people mention forced induction, but what does it really mean? How does it affect an engine's performance? And what role does air temperature play in all of this? The cool thing about thermodynamics is that we can explain effects with equations. Using basic compressor equations, we'll put some numbers to the affects of air temperature and compressor efficiency on co…

I've been researching for awhile and I am more lost then when I started... My HX35 is mashed potatoes and it's time to throw it in the scrap pile. I've been looking at the Smeding Diesel Borg Warner "drop in" turbos because I've heard good things for the price. My truck has a FASS150, 150hp injectors, Quad ADR, 103# springs, a 5" pipe on it and it's a 5speed. I use it for work and moderate towing, I won't be taking it to the strip anytime soon, if ever. Turbo config I'm leaning towards is a 362/68/14, think that will fit the bill? They also offer a 362/65/14 and 366/68/14, 366/73/14 which I've determined is most likely too laggy. Just need some incite, ideas, opinio…

Last fall I “upgraded” the stock hx35 on my truck to a Calibrated Power Stealth 64 Hx35. This turbo is the same basic frame as a stock hx35 so I can still use my Jacobs exhaust brake. Calibrated power makes their own 11 blade billet compressor, compressor cover. They also make their own turbine wheel which is larger to match the larger compressor wheel, and use a 9cm turbine housing. I think this tight turbine housing is what is causing my issues. I have been battling egt problems with the truck since I put the turbo on. I’ve upgraded injectors after finding posts discussing the effects of too small of an injector with out enough fuel causing high egts. I have updated the…
