Heat Shield!
I have been running a BHAF for about 125,000 miles (maybe more) and have not had or seen any need for a heat shield. Unless you plan on running with extremely high EGTs (at that point your filter is the least of your worries) you won't need one either.

Hot Battery
One semi I drove had one battery fail by getting real hot and stinking like rotten eggs. With one bad one the other three (yes, there were four in parallel) went dead. I disconnected the one bad one and ran the truck on the other three and when I got back all that was done was put a new battery in and they were still the same 4 years later when I left there. As long as the one battery checked out good I would just replace the hot battery, clean the connections and call it good.

Steering slack? Where to start?
Yes, what you have for movement is normal, and yes, that is what the steering brace is for, and you probably won't have any issue with your gear box since it isn't leaking.

Need a hand sourcing correct parts
Guess I should have known you would be ahead of me on Rock Auto! That is about the only place I can think of unless you have a junk yard around with the correct parts.

Need a hand sourcing correct parts
From what I understand Rock Auto is a place that a lot of guys have gotten parts that fit. If you look at the Rock Auto forum I believe there is a discount code posted there also.

Goerends Trans.
Last I knew Dave had transmissions on his site listed for $3250 for a 'standard' build so you can figure probably about $4k for a good tranny. I got one of his earlier units and it had performed flawlessly for over 100k miles.

Inside VP44?
Next thing that I read about is using two stroke oil in the fuel, but I can imagine that would be a royal PITA for your drivers............. Some pumps have mechanical issues and some have electrical issues. Maybe someone that knows more about the VP pumps will chime in. I know the P7100 trucks a bit better.......
-
Inside VP44?
One question that begs to be asked is do you have fuel pressure gauges in the trucks and what pressures are you seeing?

An unexpected blessing!
Nice looking buck! Deer season here in Mn too, but I didn't buy a license. Between my wife and son they can get a total of 10 deer of either sex, and if I had a license then mine would need to be a buck only, and I am only allowed one (they are registered Indian and I am not). Also their season lasts way longer than mine! However, I learned that if you allow the meat to sit in a cooler for a week or two it will be some of the most tender meat you can get! I have some moose that when cooked on the grill you can cut it with a fork! Oh, the last couple of deer my son got were in my back yard too......

Big Heat Pump Noise Problem.....
OK, just keep us informed!

So, why change the water pump if it is not leaking?
-
Big Heat Pump Noise Problem.....
It may be one big unit, but the comperssor is in a separate compartment from the blower. Is this an air cooled or water cooled system? Air cooled is a lot harder to quiet down.
-
Big Heat Pump Noise Problem.....
First question, what kind of sound is it? Comressor, fan, vibration, etc. That will tell you where to concentrate your efforts. You may be able to wrap it in insulation to quiet it down or maybe you would just need to put more sound deadening isulation in the comp. compartment.

Gauges went crazy!
Check the connections. Time to clean ALL battery connections and see what happens.

Broken Starter Solenoid Wire
It all depends on how easy the wire inside the solenoid is to get to and your ability to solder it.

ABS codes? How do I retreive them?
That is where I like my '96. All I need is a test light to pull my ABS codes. Just touch the popper terminal in the OBD connector and count the blinks of the ABS light.

Loss of Power
If you had a boost leak then chances are your truck would be smoking. With no smoke it would be a lack of fuel. When was the last time you changed your fuel filter and what is your fuel pressure?
