Towing Mileage
Thanks everyone. It is interesting to see what everyone gets. I am not too far off. I also recently changed and went back to a stock profile tire (and will be removing my levelling kit) and I found the truck to be much more drivable than it was with 34.5s or whatever they were. I can turn the wheel easier, the power steering has oomph again... its nice.

Towing Mileage
So, I recently drove from Oklahoma to Colorado only a month later move back across the country from home in Colorado to Arkansas. It's only temporary for work but hey, I burned a lot a fuel and got to play with my truck. Below is the truck and trailer combo, a 28' cargo trailer bought from some great folks in Tulsa. More info on that in the Garage Section. I was quite heavy (for me) on the way to Colorado... somewhere north of 22,000 lbs total. Heading to Arkansas on the second leg I dropped quite a bit of weight and was under 20,000 lbs. I fought 50 knot winds on the way to Colorado and ended up getting 8-9 combined MPG for that leg due to fighting winds. However, on the leg to Arkansas i averaged 11-12mpg with only light winds while crossing Oklahoma. The truck pulled fine, the ATS trans did good held a steady 140-150 during cruise, the new Industrial single turbo kept EGTs in check except for the short time at 98F when the intercooler just didn't do the job and I had to drop down into 3rd for a while as EGT passed 1250F. I did end up removing the edge comp and just cruising on the Smarty as it seemed like for my truck it drove better that way. Nothing against the Edge, but it worked. My question to you all is what kind of mileage are you getting and what speeds/weights are you running? Due to time constraints I ran 65 rather than 55 for most of my trips.

Andrew, All I can surmise from this, is that for some odd reason folks in Virginia just... well... they want YOU out of Virginia!

Super awesome. I would like to chat with you about this sometime. I've had a few labs but never did anything but hunt with them.

best towing turbo for 100 ddp injectors
Annescott. If you have a quazilla, it wouldn't hurt to try it on a low setting to try to get some timing. I thought there were some tunes around somewhere for it. I thought somebody on here was collecting them.

Lets see who you are!
I only saw ND in the winter. Kinda reminded me of the old rebel base on Hoth.

best towing turbo for 100 ddp injectors
How much smoke are we talking here? It is hard to define without pictures but I get smoke off the line with my setup when towing. It just happens. However, if I am empty and roll into the throttle right I don't have to smoke. I think the programmer would help, depending on what boost numbers you are seeing. I would also check your turbo boots for any boost leaks... They can be very hard to find and quite insidious. What kind of boost are you seeing?

Welcome. Tell us about the rest of the truck. Manual, auto, fuel system, programmers, timing box, gauges, etc. Also, how heavy are you planning on towing? what are your goals for towing? Economy? Drivability? Blazing power to fly up hills... but hopefully not down them. I like my 62, but I would like twins. I didn't hate a stock HX when I had one, or my 35/40 hybrid though, it was just a lot hotter EGT.

Re-Thinking the Boost Controller.
I would be interested to see how it reacts with steady load and enough fuel to ride the 22psi boost you have set. I am betting it either works well or it will oscillate a little bit.

Fuel additive
I wonder if they want to sponsor the site and have a sales presence here.

I'll post it unless some one ims me.

Performance Tuners
I'm going to have a comp for sale shortly. I just bought a tst.

Re-Thinking the Boost Controller.
I need more scales on your chart. Haha. Can you add boost to the right side? Where are you calling the open at 17psi?
-
Performance Tuners
If could find a used tst I'd buy one. I rarely use the compas it is due to wanting to use the smarty for timing.
-
Performance Tuners
I run a comp and smarty. I prefer the smarty alone unless I am going to hot rod. It isn't just 60hp depending on the turbo and injectors.

Double overdrive thoughts
Gear vendors units are very strong for pulling. They aren't to be used as an engine brake due to their conical clutch. They are self contained and take about 1 hp to run the pump. Use non synthetic lube btw. As for straining the trans? Yes, it strains it just like a higher gear would... HOWEVER! the unit allows you to split gears and essentially have a 8, 10, or 12 speed that is quite reliable and will put less strain on the drive train when driven right. The units also have a speedo cable/sensor built in and a good controller unit. I wish I had one in my truck. I will probably put one in my barracuda at some point.

Low Smoke Passing Power
Thats a big turbo. It will be tough to keep the smoke down at low RPMs. You will be able to do what you are looking for at speed, but you will need fuel to do it. Honestly, I would call some of the vendors and start asking questions. I am betting they will tell you to go with a 100-150 hp 7 hole injector and you will need a programmer/fuel box to get that whole kit to work decently. I think you will end up with a rather peaky power curve.

That's correct. The typical wear is on the thrust surface. How was the thrust surface?

Teardown and Rebuild
After doing some searching, it seems like thrust bearing failure on manual transmission trucks isn't unheard of. I was reading on CF that there is a new style of thrust bearing that's improved.

new aluminum prop shaft.
The longer they are the less side load. The short beds run a single, so I think that eliminatea my theory on wear.
