Excessive Black Smoke on Acceleration
It's like reading a flight manual. Impressed.

MPG's Reports
19.5 mpg from Fort Collins to Durango, very very slow average speed and unloaded with no a/c... :banghead:17.3 on the way back via the high way at 65-75 mph. I think the tonneau cover helps the mpg a bit.

Fuel System Upgrade and Gauge Install
Great 1st post... Must be something in the water up there in Idaho. Must be drinking only pure grain alcohol and pure rainwater.

What truck to purchase
Considering what Mike posted, and my personal experience I write the following opinion. The 3rd gen is by far more of a comfortable, quiet, and female friendly truck. Purely stock, its also more of a truck than a 2nd gen. However, considering longevity, the 2nd gen in the 12V and 24V are both excellent engines and trucks which are surpassed by none. The only downside of a 2nd gen is that the newest ones (which Mike and I own examples of) are 11 years old at the youngest and likely abused by some punk kid with a smoke fetish. At this point, a 2nd gen is a labor of love in addition to a good truck, as many of the mechanics are not trained on an 11 year old truck and no longer have the diagnostic tools to properly service it. The 3rd gens are similar to a lesser extent, and require a special attention by the owner to find and keep a good working relationship with a quality 3rd Gen Cummins mechanic or to learn the stuff himself. I guess in short, I chose a 2nd gen. My dad chose a 3rd gen (with the expectation of filling it with grandchildren from my wife and I). My work, which doesn't have any interest except for moving crap from point A to point B, bought a fleet of all new cheap-o Ford pickups and keeps them for 4-6 years before writing them off and buying new. In my crazed, and warped oilfield / Air Force mind... :lmao2:Run fast, run far, buy a miata for a hobby car, a diesel VW for a daily driver, a gasser half ton for hauling the dog, and pack a tent... avoid campers! avoid commitment! and when you die, will your tools to the person you hate the most! (CSM may or may not have been drinking tonight)

COMPUTER
AH! that and auto spell makes sense. The answer, if that is the OP's question, is most decidedly, NO. The VP44 computers, as described by Mr. Nelson, are calibrated to the pump itself and not usually replaceable without being re-calibrated. Some local shops have mentioned putting a new computer on a failed pump to save a few bucks, but personally, I'd much rather spend the additional $300-400 and get a whole re-manufactured pump.

Do you mean this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GBU-44/B_Viper_Strike I am confused, Ed.

Excessive Black Smoke on Acceleration
I'd start and check for boost leaks with a small PVC plug with a Schrader valve or air chuck threaded into it, and regulated down to 40psi or so.

- Hello from SmartyResource
Welcome! Any word on the UDC for the 2nd gen trucks?- Pics of me towing things
Great looking truck with a very nice looking load! That stuff would be pretty $$$ down here.- Concealed Carry......................Finally
I hate Illinois Nazis! I am happy to see you guys getting some positive news for once. My usual CCW is either this IWB or a fullsize 1911 OWB.- Help choosing gauges
Big +1 on the mechanical EV (not EV2) fuel gauge. I had a mouse eat through my wiring the other day and the mechanical gauge was still accurate.- Need to be schooled in Big rig driving...
I love detroits. I don't know why, but I do. We were phasing out the 6V71s when I started in oil & gas, and those trucks lugged around the leakiest noisiest 12 and 16V71s ever.- s03 pm3 comp stack question
I was under the impression you ment Edge Comp also. Punctuation, minimal abbreviations, and sentence structure is your friend when it comes to forums.- s03 pm3 comp stack question
The Comp adds timing + fuel. Smarty gives you the option of timing + fuel, or just fuel.Stacking them adds the fueling and keeps the Comp timing.Read the back of the Smarty. It should have the info you seek on which CATCHER levels don't add timing. From what I understand, you can't separate the timing & fuel on the comp, so you are stuck with the comp timing.- ECM Discussion....
I unwrapped the wires and all my problems went away. It looked neat and orderly, but electronically, it was anything but!- ECM Discussion....
I didnt know that. That could suck. The Air Dog solenoid was wrapped tightly with other wires. Basically that made a transformer and every time the solenoid would cycle it would make a 13-20V measurable spike in the whole electrical system.- ECM Discussion....
When I had to replace my ECM, I opted for a new Mopar part. It really was a no brainer, as they had a 2 year unconditional warranty on it and at the time I had a Chrysler mechanic buddy who flashed it for me for $20. If my ECM goes out again, I will still likely put in a new Chrysler part. In my opinion, the biggest killer of ECMs is electrical noise and spikes. Making sure your alternators diodes are good and making sure you don't have any solenoids, relays, or other switches backfeeding into your system are key. I went through 3-4 Edge Juice modules, an ECM, a radio, and a VP44 computer thanks to a bad relay putting 20+ V spikes into the system when my Air Dog cycled. In short, there should be minimal AC voltage in your system when measuring with a multimeter. Personally, I am comfortable with .2 V or less, though MoparMan has a standard he found (likely from the service manual!)- Rough Day Yesterday
Prayers sent.- Need a vendor for both Isspro EV and EV2 gauges
Most of the guys don't sell EV gauges any more, and thanks to a mouse, I need a new EV fuel pressure gauge and an EV2 pyro. DAP doesn't seem to carry EV1s anymore so they are out. It's more than fubar'ed wiring, the pyro is toast and the fuel pressure is in pieces. I was trying to jury rig it to get the trip done and ended up breaking the bourdon tube and housing on the fuel pressure gauge while removing the compression fitting nut.I was going to go with Vulcan, as they had the best prices and actually carried the EV line of gauges still. However, their shopping cart won't let me check out and seems to be having issues. Genos still carries EVs, but their prices are crazy... I could go full EV2 for less than they want for their EVs.Thanks!- Made a flag pole for my truck!
Much better. 'Murica.- Made a flag pole for my truck!
Nice. But... White flag + diesel + stacks... hmmm...- recentering steering wheel?
Point taken, but I haven't had a good track record with OEM track bars. I should look at the other items, but haven't yet.- recentering steering wheel?
Tight steering in a RAM? I wouldn't know how to drive it. In all seriousness, great deal. This is something I need to work on I am starting with a 3rd gen trackbar and going from there. I think most of my front end components are still good. - - - Updated - - - Question: Vacuum issues and brakes? Was the 96 not hydroboost? - Hello from SmartyResource
