  1. The whole thought of something like this happening is quite frightening. But when it all comes down to it, who is going to execute? I would hope the good members of our armed forces are not going to simply pull the trigger on civilians just because they were ordered to do so.....Keep in mind these are the same people who give their life to fight for THIS very country and the core values and the freedoms for which we stand. They all have family and friends here, in their HOME country.
  2. Big Piney.....just across the way from Boulder....
  3. Can I ask what part of Colorado your in? I grew up in Laramie, my mother and brother and sister are still out there. Ive also got family around Wheatland, Douglas, and Cheyenne and an aunt down in Ft Collins.
  4. Hey Mike, what are the laws for carrying while in your vehicle? Ohio is open carry but the second you step in your vehicle it now bwcomes a concealed weapon, big no no. It just seems like a lot of hassle to stay on the legal side and open carry, more convenient (for me) to keep a ccw permit... - - - Updated - - - Hey Mike, what are the laws for carrying while in your vehicle? 5. Took my caliper in for exchange and was talking with the guy at the counter. He quietly conceded they have been seeing some higher than normal warranty claims on the HD pickup calipers. For the most part Im a NAPA loyalist the only other options are Autozone and Advanced Auto 30 miles away. The guys at NAPA are more knowledgeable and I like supporting small town buisiness. But this has got me thinking about going another route. Maybe time to go with caliper upgrade now that Im running 4th gen wheels... The plot thickens too. While under my truck I noticed my lower ball joint has quite a bit of play in it. really surprises me as the truck drives straight as could be with no tire wear. Im starting to get the feeling Im peddling backwards today
  6. City driving......live nowhere near one, 95% country road and highway drivingTailgating people.......never in my life, I always give plenty of room between me and the next carHeavy braking.....strike 3 I always slow gradually unless in an emergency Im a very cautious and frugal driver. It has nothing to do with my driving skills and with the larger tire deal I know people who run larger sizes with zero issues. Actually I put close to 100k miles on my 00 with 285s and had zero brake issues. My brake fluid was changed out and completely flushed as well as my rubber hoses changed out the first time I had a caliper failure, less than 20k miles ago. Now I understand an exhaust brake would take the stress off the service brakes, but these braking systems were designed to stop the truck with no exhaust brake so thats not a factor in my situation, either. My trailer brakes work very well so there is no time Im taxing my brakes more than I should be.
  7. Had just left the house on a 300 mile round trip. Got about 8 miles down the road travelling 55 mph when all the sudden the steering wheel started shaking. It got worse by the second, so I immediately began slowing down to pull off to the side of the road. As I slowed, I started smelling a very strong brake smell, and by the time I got to a stop the smoke was rolling over top of the hood . This is the second time this has happened to me in the past year. I replaced my original rotors almost 2 years ago as they were due for replacement and while I was in there put new Napa calipers on. They lasted 8 months before the left front siezed up on me. Luckily I was only going up the road to my dads and didnt go far enough to cause any damage. Fast forward to a year later, same caliper freezes up. I couldnt even push the piston back in with a large c clamp, with either caliper. Somethings not right here, and Im quickly losing faith in their calipers. Yes theyre lifetime warranty but calipers are relatively cheap compared to the havoc that can be caused when one locks up. It warped the hell out of my $250 dollar set of rotors, and with my luck may have cooked the grease in the wheel bearing. And Im not dealing with slip on rotors either, so its a job in itself just to get them off. Im slightly frustrated at the moment.
  8. I dont want to speak for anybody, but I do believe Mike has never said running 1/2" lines is a MUST. Hes merely recommended it.Heat sink has been studied countless hours by certified bosch rebuilders and its been concluded long ago that is the number 1 killer of the vp. Now theres not many ways to keep them cool as they are attached to the engine and becoming hot is inevitable. They performed many tests over the years and could not come up with a viable and cost effective solution other than adding more volume. This isnt something that one person came up with overnight, its been studied and tested tirelessly over the years. The failure rate of the vp has dropped drastically since they were new, now what other contributing factors are there other than the fact that nearly everyone (yourself included) is running higher volume pumps. I can think of one, that being upgraded materials in the ip itself to prevent mechanical failures, but thats not the majority cause of failure. Are 1/2" lines a necessity? No theyre not, but it does make sense to me to increase the size enough to increase the volume to minimize pressure drop which will in turn allow me to dial my lp back a notch or 2 which can only prolong its life. Bottom line, if you feel the stock lines are adequate for your needs, than stick with them.
  9. You probably wont find anything from the FSM that says anything about return flow, when the vp trucks first came out it was stated by Dodge (and initially believed) that 5-7 psi as all that was needed for the vp. Thousands of failed vp's later, everybody lost faith and started doing their own tests. The vps are a different animal and cant really be compared to other fuel systems. Some injection pumps dont even require a lp so saying "this engine only needs x amount" is really comparing apples to oranges. My truck currently has the stock fuel lines, and Im running an AD FRRp pump. I do notice the pressure pulls down about 3 to maybe 4 psi under heavy loads, so Ive adjusted the pump up the same amount to compensate to ensure it doesnt drop below 14 psi. So by turning up my pump Im running it harder to compensate. The use of larger lines does seem to make sense, even if its to put less of a strain on the lp and to keep the vp cool. Not to mention Fuel lines are much cheaper than pumps
  10. I hear what your saying but also keep in mind that John Martin was an engineer at Lubrizol for many years. Lubrizol makes many of the additives that are found in todays oils. While I dont know John personally, I have been in the plant in one of Lubrizols plants in nearby Painesville, OH many times over the years installing various boilers and piping systems and I can tell you theyve got quite the facility to test the products they make. Im guessing the reason he can claim which oils are benificial and which ones arent is because he is very familiar with all the additives found in oils. He is making his observations once he determines which additives are in each brand because hes already spent countless hours and years determining which additive provides the most wear protection, which is the best detergent, etc etc. Now Ill be the first to admit, I know nothing about oil other than what I have read over the years. But personally knowing a little bit of the companies background, I would consider this a pretty good source of information. Just my opinion, no disrespect meant
  11. Im not familiar with Hammerite but as long as it is automotive paint it should look fine. Keep in mind prep work is every bit as important as the paint job itself, take your time removing the clear coat, repair any rust you have, and use the reccommended primer, reducer and spray methods. Otherwise it will most likely come out with an orange peel look. Now if its not automotive paint it will still do the job but may not lay out as flat and smooth.
  12. I will be needing a dampener in the near future, I would like to upgrade to a fluid damper but I dont know if I could justify the cost? Its more of a question than a statement because Ive never been in a truck with one on it. What I do know is that my oem dampener has lasted 13 years and still looks to be in fair condition, so Im not against buying another. I would definitely be interested in a price quote though!
  13. They did a blind test on those oils, so I highly doubt it was biased. As for the Valvoline Blue not being highly thought of, if Cummins has spent thousands of hours helping develop and testing a product and stands behind it, its good enough for me
  14. I was recently told by a trans builder that 2nd gear lockup is hard on converters and he did not recomend I modify my vb. Does yours slip under moderate loads or only heavy loads?
  15. Ive seen some guys pin their rear axle to prevent it from hopping, is that not legal in the stock classes?
  16. According to my Dodge Ram Registry I have which lists all changes from every model year, 95 was the last year of the RH trans. In 96 they bumped horsepower ratings up to 180 HP and went to the RE trans. Logically thinking, the plug would have to be different because one is electronically controlled and one is not, but I dont have anything to confirm that...
  17. I dont really have any good advice (as usual) but if it were my truck I would probably go through the other things Dean wanted you to look at with the OD switch and whatever else, if after that its still not right I would probably swap the pcm. If youve been through everything else..... Ive always had faith in him and hes never led me astray, but with that being said he also had my truck in front of him not on the other end of a phone several hundred miles away....thats a game changer...If you dont mind me asking, whats the going rate on a used pcm?
  18. Hmm, did he explain why he thinks it makes a difference?
  19. I wonder if the parts dept at the dealership would be able to decipher the difference?
  20. Bummer......so it appears as though you may be in the market for another pcm, unless he knows of a way around it?
  21. FYI, we are eastern time zone in case your calling later in the evening
  22. Thats good to hear, Rick. Dean is about as good as they come when it comes to an automatic transmission. I hope he can help you get it sorted out, sounds like hes got you off to a good start already! please keep us posted!By the way, its really got me baffled how you were able to get a hold of him the first night you tried! It takes me days sometimes Im gonna have to work on him about this.....
  23. Cool lookin project! I love the simplicity of the early 12 valves, we had them in an air compressor and our small 27ton crane. Difference in mileage from 4.10s to 3.55 in my 2nd gen (Ive had both) is right around 2 mpg depending on how you drive. Love to see some pics!
  24. Page says unavailable :think:How hot do you let er get before you back off the skinny pedal?
