2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Well, last week I changes injectors to a stock size set I bought in hopes of gaining some mileage. They did not yield any better mileage so I put the old ones back in. When I removed them the first time the truck ran great, idled right at 800 and had balls. I pulled the injectors apart and noticed the pintle in #1 was really stuck in the nozzle. I wasnt sure if the pintles from stock injectors were the same size as bigger injectors so I measured them with a micrometor and they seemed the same so I swapped one out with the sticky one. The truck fired up pretty quickly but is idleing at 1100 rpm. What did I do wrong? --- Update to the previous post... Resset the a…

I changed the injectors yesterday, it was my first time doing that. For the most part everything went well, usless you count me dropping a screw driver twice in between the intercoooler and radiator. While I was in there I adjusted the valve lash and that went pretty well. I took a picture of my cross over tubes, as this is the first time pulling them, I didn't know if this was normal. The o rings were all still in place but you can see how they had deformed and created a mess above their groove. Everyone of them were like this. The o rings themselves were all still in tact but in pretty bad shape, not sure how much longer they would have gone before I would hav…

  3. Install some DAP 7x.009 injectors. Everything went smooth and took my time checking everything. Tightened everything to spec's. Bled the system after installing and she cranked right up. Nothing leaks but now after sitting over night I have to crank on it a good minute or so to get it started. Before I couldn't hardly get my hand on the key and it would be running. At first I thought it may be some air in the system still seeking higher ground but after a couple weeks Im starting to wonder if maybe it's something else. I cleaned everything good and also put new orings on the crossovers. Any ideas on what else I should look for. Also have fass lift pump 17 at idle and…

I need some help! I just installed 7x.011 DFI injectors, I currently have a quadzilla with custom tunes as well. After I installed the injectors I’m getting a surging only when I press the clutch in to come bring the truck to a stop. Idles just fine no issues, no white smoke no ungodly knocking sounds. Idk what the issue is. I reset the apps after injector install since I unplugged it to install them. This surge happened with and Edge EZ as well. Can anyone help me narrow down the issue? Also no CEL codes. I should add this is 2000 Dodge Ram 3500 has approx. 181k miles.

I finally pulled the trigger. My injectors are stock original as far as I know with 165k on them. Been noticing the idle creeping up a bit more lately, 0% engine load at idle and doesn't feel as crisp as it used to. So, called @dieselautopowerand talked to Jacob, explained what I have, how I use the truck and future plans. After a great conversation placed an order for a set of 7x0.009 VCO injectors. Looking forward to installing them to see the difference.

  6. Started by CSM,

I bought my truck with some unknown "140 hp" injectors. I've always run hot (400f idle) and attributed it to cheap 5 hole tips. As it turns out, the truck ran amazingly well for not having a crush washer under the no. 4 jnjector! I bought a turbo and injector set and these new injectors mademail a new truck out of it. Turbo should go in this next weekend. Moral of the story? Injectors are still easy to install, and still make a world of difference. If I ever pick up another truck I am changing the injectors or having themy pop tested immediately.

Yeah, it's me again with more newbie questions... Installing my new RV275 injectors, before I bugger something up wanted to ask a question/get confirmation. My FSM says to push new injectors in by hand, and (in bold) NOT to use any additional tools to force them in. The install videos I've watched also say the same thing and show them popping right in. Well, that's not working, even with minimal additional mechanical help. Yes, all the injector tubes are out. Yes, I did put oil on the the new 'O' rings and the new copper washers are well seated and not slipping off. Yes the old copper washers are out as well. I double checked the receipt from Diesel Auto Power and i…

  8. Hey guys, ill try to keep this short. I got some 7x.009 dfi injectors last month. After installing these, my truck has a rough idle when engine temps are hot. I had these sent to chris at dfi and the injectors are all pop tested and flow at 300 bar. My install was good all new orings and copper washers no scoring on crossover tubes When i had my stock injectors in i had no rough idle at all, no hard starts, and no fuel leaks. Truck has had raptor 150 since ive owned it 19 psi idle 15-16 wide open. No check engine lights since ive owned the truck. But when i bought truck last september it has 8psi idle with factory pumpWhich is now leading me to believe that because im…

Hi guys So I think its time for some new injectors, truck has a pretty decent knock than sounds like all the injector knock videos on you tube. The stock ones have 253000 miles on them so I'm sure the pop pressure is pretty low. From my reading on here it sounds like maybe 100-150k mile per set give or take. So my question is. With a mostly stock truck would you guys recommend RV 275s or the DAP 7V.008 50 HP set or something completely different. Some day I would like to add some HP but nothing too crazy for the time being anyway. They are pretty similar in cost so looking for advise/experiences for other users. 98.5 Standard Cab with lots o…

  10. I've got an 01 2500, 4x4, quad cab. I just had the inj, pump replaced at 175k miles. Stock rebuilt as far as I know. the truck has an K&N air cleaner and 4 inch exhaust. I pull a 31 foot travel trailer and usually gross out anywhere from 18 to 19 thousand pounds. Other than that looong split between 3rd and 4th (it's a 5 speed), I really enjoy the truck. I hear a lot of info about upgrades and the power and fuel mileage increases they give you. I.m getting ready to head cross country ( ore to N.C) and wondering,"will they really help?) Right now it gets an average of 18mpg by itself and 11 to 14 with the trailer(9 to 10 in a strong head wind) Thanks. This is my first…

Every new day brings a new discovery!! So today I destupided (it's the blond streaks I can't help it) and learned from this site, that I was exiting the turn key switch 3x trick do dump codes too soon, as a result I was missing out on all the fun of getting the 2nd code. I pulled 2 codes from the PCM I got a P1693 and from the ECU I got a P0230. Mind you, I was unable to pull these codes with any ODB2 scan tool. I've tried 3 different ones. I still can't pull either of those codes with and ODB2 scan tool, even with the connector disconnected. I followed these instructions and when I took off the connector, and I was super…

Not sure wether I want to go with FASS or AirDog lift pump, but with either one do you have to drop the fuel tank or pull the bed?

I decided to rebuild my 2nd gen. I'd bought a rust free box and set of doors 2 years ago to be installed. That was all I planned on. Then last Feb I was on the DOR site. I ordered a few parts, extreme 3" lift, long arms, bolt in steering, steering brace, traction bars, Carli rear springs with axle flip and airbags, fox 2.5's coil overs up front, fox bump stops front and rear. I'd already collected and installed a few fueling and air upgrades, EJWA hot unlock, fass 95, Crazy Carl's tunnel ram intake, 3.5" intercooler piping, air horn, BHAF, Magnaflow stacks etc. Then I ordered a few more parts, II VP, Crazy Carl's twin kit with a 62/68/12 and a S475/96/1.10…

  15. Hi everybody, I'm a new member here, but have been lurking for some time learning as much as I can. My first truck was a lifted 01 f350 with the 7.3 psd. It had an exhaust leak and possibly bad injectors, and was lifted way high with 38's. Not my style truck, and was more than I felt comfortable tackling myself (I was 20). I found an immaculate 02 cummins with 115k miles, totally unmolested with a paint matched canopy and bed rug. I was in love from the first time I saw it on craigslist. Went and bought it the next day with a small loan. Fast forward about 2 years today, still have it and love it. It now has 140k on the clock and I have done oil changes and fuel fil…

Hello, new member, 1st post. Long time dodge CTD owner. Have lurked on many of the Diesel forums but never joined one. This one seems more laid back and relaxed then some I read info on. I just picked up my 3rd 24v 2nd gen truck a few weeks ago. It's a stone stock 98.5 24v, just had a reman IP pump put on it less then 4,000 miles before I bought it. I bought a 1999 brand new in the fall of 1998, I could write a novel about that trucks healthy appetite for lift & IP pumps and my experiences with cummins and dodge about it. But that is not a new story. No one had an aftermarket fix for those trucks back in the day when they were brand new, like a AD/Fass. …

So 2 days after a long road trip I noticed a new noise that sounds like its coming out of the exhaust. Between about 1100-1200rpm I get a loud tick/tat that I can clearly hear over my exhaust. It happens in all gears and only really makes the noise when I'm on the throttle, can't hear anything at idle. My only thought is my exhaust valves are out of adjustment going to adjust then tomorrow to see if it fixes it, but not sure:shrug: Any thoughts please let me know.

  19. Ok Long story short, is still very long: I had my NV4500 transmission go down a few weeks back, in Casper WY. took is to Thomas Crawford auto repair. I had a very good experience . But now I've got issues. History: Took about week to get one sent to the shop in Wy, from Midwest transmission in zumbrota MN which isn't far from where I live. The repair shop and I decided to upgrade to the 1 3/8th input shaft, plus all the other updates that Midwest Transmission and gear, does to these trans when rebuilding them. For the clutch, I opted for the SBDD and new hydrolics. Hoped this would work better with my towing needs. Finally , The installer p…

Let me start by saying the tranny is new along with new valair clutch and hydraulics in a 99 ram 3500 with NV4500. Had local shop install everything and all was good for about 3 weeks. Now for some reason the tranny has issues with 3rd and 4th gears. There are times I shift through all 5 gears with just a little forcing but there are times it'll hang in 3rd are 4th gear. Before the major issues I noticed at times from a stop I would have to cycle to fourth before I could get into 2nd. I am at loss because it work so smoothly for the first couple of weeks. I have spoke to the tranny builders and Valair and of course each of them blames the other's product. The truck…
