2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. So driving home tonight I spend a fair amount of time on a 50mph road. Truck seems to run at about (never realized how goofy our tach markings are) 1800-1900rpm in 5th gear at 50, or drops to around 14-1500 in 6th. Keep in mind I am empty (I know the towing answer) it’s pretty much flat the whole way (definitely use 5th to climb) just curious about the rest of the time. Opinions?

I'm working on diagnosing a P0237 code. I installed a fuel boss and primed the system by cracking the injectors resulting in fuel down the side of the block. Wondering if that could have caused it or I bumped something out of place. I removed the MAP sensor and cleaned it, appeared in good condition. Attempting to follow the steps : Though, my OBDlink mx is unable to read MAP voltage. I'm getting Mass air pressure readings, could the boost on the Quad be at fault? Going to disconnect the harness and see if I can get a voltage reading off the plug with the multimeter tomorrow.

  3. Truck has intermittent power steering, moaning and groaning. Going to start simple with fluid. Any last minute advice on fluid choice? I don’t have a jack to get the front wheels off of the ground, will get one if you guys tell me that is the only way. I have jack stands just no jack. Any and all help is appreciated.

  4. Ok got an egt now need to know 1 best location for probe. 2 if best location is exhaust manifold is it hard to drill and tap? From looking at the post here it seems pre trubo is best.

Yesturday my radio quit working but still has lights on it no dome light and no power to the diagnostics port if checked all the fuses they are all good. I have been told it could be a bad diode in the alt putting out ac noise and iv also been told bad ecm. I do have an issue with with my positive cables on batteries always getting super corroded not long after I clean them. I need some help here before I go dump a pile of money in this thing…

I have been getting a 0234 code since I bought my truck (in July) and realized that the wastegate was stuck closed, and finally decided to fix it. This is supposed to be a pretty straight forward job. Pull the turbo, free the wastegate and reinstall.Mr. Murphy arrived to help me and I learned about his little law. So, I pulled the turbo and the started working on the wastegate with heat, PB Blaster, and a baby ball peen hammer. I patiently tapped heated and squirted for an hour. Then I think, call Mike Nelson for advice. So Mike advised me to remove the back plate (don't know what it's called) that what-cha-ma-call-it that hooks the turbo to the exhaust, so I can acc…

I put a new Certified Transmission in my truck. Its the Road Ripper 2000. It been running and shifting great. I finally put 10,000 miles on it. So I decide to go ahead and drop the pan and change fluid and adjust bands. I did not do a complete flush. Just what came out of the pan. I adjusted the front and rear bands also. After getting it put back together, I took it for a test drive. I noticed that 1 to 2 shift and the 2 to 3 shift is now delayed. When driving it will rev up to about 2400-2500 rpms and hold there for about a second-second and half, then finally shift. It did not shift this high before I did the adjustment. On one of Michaels articles, under g…

  8. My truck has had a random skipping idle with rpms jumping up and down slightly on tach. It skips at any rpm range and very noticeable. I recently upgraded the injection pump because of the computer issues. This didn't help it out at all. I have checked fuel pressure and checked for air in supply to pump. It seemed to have started when i upgraded my injectors to 40hp injectors. I have replaced all seals on injectors and tubes. I did scratch a couple tubes. I did bleed air from every line at head. I don't know if the tubes being scratched would cause this bad of an idle? I can firmly say that from the lift pump to the injection pump is good. Im thinking it is down to connec…

  9. I tried to buy some new engine oil today but, for the first time, I having a hard time finding synthetic 15w-40 diesel engine oil for my '99 Dodge Ram 2500. The truck has 264,000 miles and I've owned it since it was new. I usually run Amsoil 15w-40 Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine Oil or the Mobil 1 equivalent. All the stores now seem to only carry the 5W-40 synthetic oil which I thought was only for the newer diesels. Can I safely use the 5w-40?Thanks. ----- Jim

Have set a code 0122 but the truck is running fine. Researching the TPS and it is not very expensive. What is the difference between a TPS with a harness and one without a wiring harness? Both listed for a 2001 diesel. Now to replace it. I think it is behind the housing with the cables that control the throttle. What needs to be removed to get to it? Last question is should I dive in and replace it and how do I reset the trouble codes?

I have 188,000 on my 2002 VP44. I hear they have a reliability problem that is starting to worry me. My gcw is 18000lb with my 5r. Should i just change it or at least line up a vendor that sells a reliable rebuilt. Any suggestions where to buy one?? Also do the orfices wear out on the injector nozzles that could produce a poor spray pattern? My mileage is going down. Truck is stock with no trick controller ( California). If i do change injectors what would be recommended?

I have a fairly good idea of how the lockup switch works. I am curious though, if you install a switch but don't have the switch on, will the converter lock/unlock like normal? Do you have to control it 100% of the time if you install the switch? I'm not really sure I need or want to do it, these are just questions I keep asking myself every time I see a post related to it.

  13. Hi Guys! 1st want to say a BIG THANK-YOU to all RE the Timbo, new alternator etc! Running well, but low fuel pressure at VP44. So dropped the tank and found the bottom of the "module" screens were clogged. Local Dealer has no parts other than New In-Tank pump system, and recommended gentle cleaning with a soft tooth brush and brake cleaner fluid. While Gently cleaning the the bottom screens, the top one ripped. My wrench guy removed the little spring unit that seemed to fit between the screens. (I think I said that right.) We then put the new float level unit on and after cleaning the bottom screen, re-attached it. But He did not p…

Excuse my haphazard post if this has already by discussed, but I felt that it would be something us guys with older trucks would care about. That being the introduction of CK-4 oil replacing CJ-4. Apparently its an issue for Ford whereby they claim accelerated wear in their engines with this new oil. Anyone have any experience or knowledge of what this new CK-4 classification is all about.....or why it was introduced? I dont care other than I dont want my "older" engine to wear out for sake of environmentalism.

  16. The subject matter has been discussed for years and all diesel enthusiasts/owners know how important it is to maintain proper levels of fuel pressure via the "transfer pump" or Lift Pump for reliable operation. There are many requirements that each owner/operator may wish to achieve in replacing the OE Carter or perhaps making an aftermarket selection. Notably, most have had the rude awakening of a failed VP44 following the failure of the Lift Pump in a too late scenario. The cost of a VP44 compared to the Factory (Carter) Lift Pump is considerable and many of us have learned the hard way. The general consensus among the vast majority is to eliminate the fact…

Well the Ram just ate another ECM. Must be high in protein. The first ECM went with around 3500 miles from new in 2000 when I bought it. The dealer replaced it & never said what happened. The second ECM went wild & through just about every code you could list. I think this was in 2008. Not repairable at the time. The 3rd ECM got replaced with a used one from a 98.5. I got the used ECM & PCM together from a guy in Montana. They would not work in my truck together, So I tried just his ECM & my PCM & the marriage was formed. That work fine up to about 2 years ago. Then the WTS light, fuel pump & grids started doing their thing. Then re…

Hello guys, I've been working on a 2000 5 speed truck for a friend that's got me scratching my head. Truck has just over 300k on it and was cutting out randomly and would shudder and he said it was worse when it was cold. Truck had no error codes, new fuel filter, both batteries and alternator are new. I drove it my Snap on scanner on it watching live data on a graph. I could see the APPS signal going whack when truck would act up. Had another VP truck at the house so "borrowed" good working TPS quick to verify that was the issue. Truck ran great with that factory style TPS with no issues. So I ordered the "commercial grade" APPS sensor from DieselAutoPower.com since they…

I searched the past 45 pages of articles looking before asking. 1999 Dodge Cummins 2500 with fuel leak at #5 cylinder at injection connector tube and injection line nut. The tube had a cracked O-ring so it was replaced with a new tube. On start up no leak, 1 mile down the road no leak, up on the interstate for 6 miles and it's leaking again. Retightened but still leaking. Pulled the line off to check the mating surfaces with also looked good. Still leaking, any ideas? Part 2: This is for me to understand. The tubes pops out easy, no problem getting the removal tool on the tubes. Once in place how does it stay in place and not turn when tightening? First time I change…

  20. I've got my 2001 2500 5-speed 4x4 down with a lift pump problem. Currently the newly replaced (in-line style, original location on engine) pump is primed and working during starting and maintains over 15 psi (that's the my of my gage). If the truck has sat for a few minutes, it will turn on briefly when the ignition is turned on, and it responds to blipping the starter by turning on for 25 seconds. I can hear good fuel flow returning to the tank (which I just cleaned up when replacing the fuel sender). Once I got the fuel circuit bled of air, it started just fine, but as soon as the engine starts, the lift pump shuts off. The injection pump is apparently able …
