2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

As of lately my truck has become hard to start. It requires about two ten second cranks to fire but then runs great. I have checked for fuel leaks and tightness of fuel components. I installed a lift pump and new lines 9 months ago. Also the tach doesn't match the speed you are driving. At light acceleration the rpms will jump all the way to 2k and on the highway at 60 mph it usually stays around 2700 rpm. I am not sure if it would be the crank sensor since I have no codes. The hard starting just happened out of the blue a couple weeks ago. Any help would great.

Need some opinions on gauges. Before I joined this forum I put Glow shift gauges and a 3 gauge pillar pod on my 02 After reading many of the members comments I was sorry that I got them.I've nothing but trouble with them, Thermocouples going bad, sensor going, out irratic fuel pressure readings.I've been seriously thinking about chucking the them and getting ISSPRO or Auto meter mechanical gauges to re place them.Any reason I should think about electronic gauges.DAP has a special on ISSPRO gauges ?

I have the Haines manual and the downloaded factory service manual for this 1999 Ram 3500. The two publications contradict each other on the setting of the nut for the rear wheel bearings. the factory manual states to back off the nut 1/8 of a turn after torquing to 120-140 ft lbs and the Haines manual says to back off 1/3 of a turn. I went with the factory manual and backed off 1/8 of a turn. One hub runs warmer that the other. Any advice. Thanks

  4. Hauled some cattle home yesterday with the new flatbed. Had to shorten up the gooseneck post on the trailer. The ball is sitting about 4-5 inches taller than the original one. I sure don't miss the rattling of a self-destructing box! Anyhow, I'm going 'full out' on this, (installing a new brake controller too) This truck came with a controller, which for the life of me, couldn't make it work. Sooo, out it came. (8 years ago) I have an eye on a couple models to install. So, when I wired up the flatbed and trailer harness, I went ahead and hooked up the light blue wire for the brake actuator circuit. Back half of truck is now done. Where do I look for the fro…

I'm assuming I'll need valve seals. Any way to do it without removing head or injectors? If I could figure out where tdc is for each cylinder valves should not fall in. Lol. #6 hard to do?

How much play in the rear wheel bearings on my 99 3500 2wd Dana 80 would it take to create the vibration I have been working to eliminate for a while?

Getting ready to install new billet torque converter in the old 47re. Just wanting some tips on what else should be replaced while I have it out. Rear main, front pump seal kit? If anyone knows of a good brand pump seal kit let me know. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Also, what's the best filter?

I have a 1999 24v cummins. I'm probably the 4th owner, possibly 5th. A previous owner had installed exhaust mods, fass DDRP v02, Edge Juice with attitude. I'm not sure of any other modifications. The DDRP went out on me the other day on my way home. I limped truck home. After sitting over night and trying to start the next day, truck was showing 0 fuel psi anywhere and i couldnt hear the lift pump at all. I was limited by funds, but replaced the lift pump with a napa one (airtex i think is the brand - not ideal, i know) Truck then was showing 21psi at the top of the filter cap, but 0 psi leaving the filter cap. My edge, which i believe checks psi at the VP44 s…

so a few days ago i went to start my truck after work (sat 10 hours) and when i started it, it took 3-4 cranks instead of normal, ran rough for the first few rotations, then bright blue smoke was coming out of the exhaust. it has done this every time ive started it since. any ideas whats causing it? i need this fixed asap, vacation trip coming up soon! also on a side note, my fuel pressure gauge has a mind of its own. between 20 and 30 psi. bounces occasionally, spikes, doesnt alter whether i floor it or at idle

Hello Guru's. I need to change the filter on my airdog 100. The last time I did it I remember losing lots of fuel. What do you guys do ? I was thinking of clamping the hoses. Have any of you ball valves on the hoses to keep from losing fuel ?

My transmission (47re) was shifting hard for a little while, and then I lost overdrive. I replaced the filter and solenoids on the trans and the hard shifting stopped but I still don't have overdrive. I replaced the APPS sensor less than 10k ago. I have read on here about a band being to tight or lose, but I don't know what this band is or if its slang. Please help, and thanks for the time.

Ok, so I keep hearing about #1 and #2 diesel. Also certain stations are containing 5-20% bio diesel fuel. If I am out running around at any particular day of the year what do I need to look for in fuel when it comes to any of this? I know there is a summer and winter blend but do not know the difference. What do I need to watch out for at the pumps? Sorry for the noob question, I just want to be on the right path and this way I can pick my fuel stations to fill up at when I need to or at least know what I am looking at when I fill up anywhere.

Well I've gone and done it. I went and installed a muffler. But this muffler I was happy to install. It a 3" in and 3" out with straight pipe through it. Designed much like a glass pack but not. Best part NAPA has them in stock for super cheap price. NAPA - Muffler - EXH 21468 http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Result.aspx?Ntt%3d21468%26Ntk%3dKeyword%26Nty%3d1%26Dn%3d0%26D%3d21468%26Dk%3d1%26Dp%3d3%26N%3d0 It really quiet after all the years of straight pipe it super quiet. People are going to wonder if I sold my truck.

For some time now I have not been able to switch the Transfer case into N and therefore no 4l either. I have 2wd and 4h. This happened due to my dumbness. Last year when I swapped my tranny I caused this. I had the truck up on jack stands and the truck was idling and I was going between P R N D to make sure the tranny was working. Now I made the mistake of testing the transfer case with the wheels off the ground so even in P the rear wheels were moving slowly. once I kicked it out of N iin the transfer case It grinded but finally went into 4l. I then tried to go back to N in the Tcase and it grinded again and when into N. After that I put the rear of the…

At this point this is more a place holder that will be moved to a article if we can get stuff working with the Torque app that communicates with the ecm via a cheapo bluetooth obd2 adapter. Out of the box the app doesn't read much of anything. You get RPMS, load, coolant temp maybe. Very basic stuff, however you do have the ablity to enter custom PID's and have the app read values manually. Figure if we could read tranny temp, oil pressure, boost values etc it would be a VERY cheap way for some of the guys to get at least some of the gauges they need. MAP PID: p0102 from what I can see? so firstly, has anyone done this work yet? No point in…

Well, got my diagnosis from the trans shop today, the 47re needs a full rebuild. They want to charge me 1500-2000 for a stock rebuild and 2500-3000 for an updated rebuild. Considering I could buy a waranteed reman for that or do a 5 spd swap, I think I'll be going elsewhere. I'm looking at Shift Rite (out of Kankakee IL) or Smart Parts. Both have warantees and seem comparable. Any words on which is better? Shift Rite is a couple hour drive away so I can bring my broken trans in and make sure it passes core inspection, then leave with my new trans and save shipping cost, so I like that idea. Any other brands out there in the $1500 range I should look at? …

Mulcher flashed my ecm last summer and it must have included the high idle update. Temps have been near 20* last couple of nights and the high idle came one after a minute or so of starting. Running about 1,300 rpm. It's running on 6 cylinder high. I do not have the idle fooler mod.
