2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

  1. I read the thread on IAT relating to MPG performance during winter weather. I have possibly a similar issue and was wondering if anyone else has experience or if anyone might know what is causing it. Just a piece of mind thing more than anything. Set Up: 02 cummins, 6speed, 102k miles, with Edge EZ and RV275's Symptoms: I have confirmed that during cold weather usually below 50-55 degrees I have a noticeable hesitation around 1400-1600 rpms when I get down on it. My version of a romp does not involve spinning up a $1000 set of michelins so just know that I don't hammer on my stock clutch like that. It usually happens in 5 and 6 gear. Especial…

I have a issue with my Juice I think. I’m not to concerned about it because I’m getting rid of the edge and going back for another Qaudzilla. So i went to check my wire tap and promptly lost the posi tap piece. Ordered a new one and reconnected it and seems rather slow compared to the first time I tapped it?? Any ideas? No codes or anything. Almost seems like a dead pedal but not really. Definitely has more power than without wire tap though so I lm sure it’s getting fuel. Fuel pressure is 18 at idle and 13 15 wot.

  3. I just got rid of my boost elbow and installed a manual boost controller recommended by @kzimmer. It's the best $5.46 I ever spent on this truck. Now when I mash down on the go peddle the boost gauge jumps to 26psi, trans shifts up and boost goes to 28psi. When it shifts to 4th, boost hits 30psi and speedo saying 80. No more boost bleed off. There is a lot more room on the adjustment for more boost so how much more boost can I dial in and still be safe?

Just got my 02 back from an extensive build from a local shop. The more I read about stacking, the dumber I seem to feel. The guy that writes the MM3 tunes for my shop recommended flashing the ecm with the mm3 tunes, and then putting in an Edge comp box through the data link to be able to "full field" the injection pump. Set up in this way, do these two work together? If they do, how can I set things up (things meaning wires lol) so that I can adjust both on the fly? Currently the edge is adjustable on the fly but to change levels with the mm3 I was told I would have to disconnect the edge and use the data link, then reconnect the edge when done. Any help would be greatly…

So while Mike is happy with the power of the quad he is struggling to get good mpg out of the unit, unlike Tyler and myself. Bothersome because we didn't even have to try it just came with the lack of smoke. I think Tyler did 21 on his first try with his firehouse injectors and I did 24.7 without trying with my 100's Mike however is struggling to hit 20. We are all running the same timing map, but different tuning on the canbus fueling. I am however down at nearly sea level now running Mike's tune and I am smoke free so I know Mike's tune is WAY under fueled since he has 50's. I am betting Mike has get away with a starting…

Hi All, I started this thread to share (maybe inspire, feel free to add posts on your own) fellow 2nd gen owners on the refresh of my truck as while its getting older, I think there are simple ways to make it fit better into the modern world. This mindset started when I started considering buying a 4th gen, and while they are awesome I realized that with a little TLC my 2nd gen could fit better into the modern truck world and I could avoid a truck payment! What I have done thus far: 1. New shocks on all four corners (no pics, sorry) 2. Additional lighting upfront (I can get a picture this weekend) 3. Removed, cleaned and remounted the weat…

  8. The wife is letting me spend some money on the truck, so here's what I need. 1. I just rolled over 250k miles, I know the head gaskets have a tendency to let go around now. I was thinking of doing it pre-emptively and tossing in some head studs. Is that wise or should I just wait for it to fail on it's own. What brand of head gasket should I use, I have access to Fel-Pro and Mahle at work or I can go to the local Cummins shop. I would have the head checked and worked over while it's off as well. 2. I know I need injectors, I'm probably still on the original ones. I have noticed my MPG's have dropped a bit in the last year and I am clouding …

  9. Truck: 2001 1 ton Quad Cab 4x4 6 speed HO 24v 5.9 VP44 140k miles So far the only mod is a Diamond Eye 4” stainless exhaust Philosophy of use: Truck is to be a safe and reliable daily driver. Truck will also be used to tow a small camper short and long distances. Reliability, fuel economy, and towing capability with low EGT’s are more important than a large dyno number. Goal: Reliable 24v in the 400-500hp range (Number is less important than a good running truck). Removal of the VP44 for a more reliable system. (non negotiable) Possible recipe: Fuel Boss lift pump VE Fuel Pump w/ dynamic timing …

I've been told by a friend of mine he had a 25 hp loss using a BHAF . Based on research I find that hard to believe. I'm about to put one on my truck this next week and like to know if I should proceed or not.

I got a turbo from @CSM and I went ahead and got it pulled down to rebuild it. While its apart I figure I would measure out the turbine and compressor wheels. Here is what I got. Compressor Inducer 60mm Exducer 83mm Turbine Exducer 60mm Inducer 69mm From what I found online this is a HX40 compressor wheel. The HX35W is 56mm compressor wheel. So this should be a rather nice boost (pun intended). Waiting for my bearing kit to come.

Have been running 2 cyc oil for 6 months. 128:1 ratio. Was wondering if anyone has had any problems that can be related to the use of the 2 cyc oil? Was over on the Dodge Diesel Forum and found some info that was a bit confusing to me. Plan to keep using it and hope for the best.

  13. I'm asking this in light of the recent fuel price spikes. I don't mind paying extra for fuel because I didn't buy a 3500 dually for milage but, out of curiosity if a person were looking for mainly mpg gains would the quad investment be worth it? Last I looked they are fetching about $700 new. That would be a large investment for some people (me included at the moment). Thoughts? Thanks!

So having owned my ‘99 for a little over two months and towing my tractor a few times I think I have decided to see if I can upgrade some things to get some more power. I am as I think that would satisfy my needs. Looking at 7X.009 SAC injectors, a turbo, gauges, and a tuner of some kind to manage smoke and heat. Need some recommendations on a turbo and tuner. Thinking about this Turbo as a direct replacement. For the tuner: either an Edge Comp or the Quadzilla Iquad. Really don’t have the experience to create my own tunes and need more knowledge of diesel theory to be able to get the most out of a tuner so leaning towards somethin…

The info in my signature is up to date, with that in mind, I have an issue with the engine stumbling. No matter if I'm in the 0 setting or 3 setting it will stumble on acceleration from around 55 mph. When if you slam the throttle. In the stock setting it doesn't do it as bad. Feels like a miss. Now if I place the quad in 4 or 5, it will stumble until it kicks the wire tap in and then you can feel the miss ever so slightly. There are no codes, I have changed out the injector lines all 6 and torqued them down 28lbft. I was thinking it was the old lines, maybe they were just over torqued, no luck. This issue is really prevalent when towing. Now with no codes, could it still…

For all of you that are looking to help you Cummins Turbo Diesel breathe better well there is several different kits, filters, etc. on the market. I'm not going to bend your arm to follow my lead but I will explain why I made this choice.First off there are filters like K & N on the market that are washable and re-useable. Well I'm going to suggest you forget using these filters. When you wash a filter your going to put wear on the media and eventually open holes up in the media to allow passage of dirt. Another problem is most people over oil the filters and the turbo sucks oil in on the compressor wheel. If there is a dirt leak you will see a dirt compressor wheel a…

  17. Ok gentlemen, my 200F dodge stat came in and i swapped it into the truck. This experiment is based on comparisons of the 200F Mopar stat to the 195 Napa one. I decided to take the plunge in this, and will post up pictures later from my phone showing the two T-stats. The Mopar one is definitely looks Cummins to me, and is very beefy to start with. My Mopar one cost roughly 60 bucks out the door at the stealership, im sure one can find one cheaper elsewhere. I'll also grab a part number, but there is another thread somewhere on CF that lists it. Its a 6 series though. I decided that since no one else will play with this monster i should be the first. This is in refere…

  18. I pulled an 18 foot trailer with 2 razors and other miscellaneous stuff today on a 80% highway about an hour each way. I was running 70-75 most of the time. Until the hills if they were 6 or 7% grade I would lose speed sometimes down to 60mph. Now if I pushed the go pedal nothing happened untill it kicked down and was screaming and starting to haul a$$. Now my brothers 99 with a built trans, 100 horse injectors and an edge ez. Don't have this issue. He just mashes a little and rolls on. Is it normal or something a tuner could help? Or am I asking for more than I should be? I ain't saying it was horrible just that it started to lose speed when I didn't expect it to. No lo…

I was originally looking for some RV injectors when I came across DAPs website. Their prices are good. Was wondering what the difference was between the DAP brand and the aftermarket ones are other than 1 requires a core and the other does not. Should I keep my stock injectors? I am probably going to go with 75hp injectors Any info or recommendations would be great. Thanks

Hey guys I'm back! Crazy year, didn't have much money here lately but started a new job and I'm back! Anyways, I received the Quadzilla for my 01 a year ago for my birthday and I was super excited because for once I'll have custom tunes and I will be able to get out of the <15mpg that I had been getting with my Smarty S03.... Boy was I wrong..... Year later, mileage still sucks. NEVER got above 15mpg, no matter if I ran a tune of my own, or one of Mike's, Me's, nor Drips tunes. I'm at a loss from where to go from here. With my S03 I got 18mpg ONE TIME so I know its possible, but I've never been able to break that mid 15mpg mark. All I have done motor wise is 100hp DAP…
