2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

What causes this? I get it a lot sometimes and none other times.

Drove my truck this morning and just happened to look at the idle speed when I got to work. It was at 822-825. The coolant temp had gotten hot enough to open the tstat. However at the time my temps were showing 180ish. So would this be a reason why it's idling a little higher than normal? Idk why i pay so much attention to my gauges but I guess it's a good and bad thing 😆

  4. so let me begin with this, this all started when i decided to install some DAP 75hp injectors, ( im pretty sure anyway) so awhile back, i posted something about my fuel filter canister leaking which was creating a fuel/air leak, i would surge at first startup. I replaced the canister, all seemed good since then, but i haven't really drove it that much since replacing it, ( I also after i installed the injectors the first time( wrong, i did it backwards and realized it after i got done talking to Mike,) went back through a second time and checked all the o-rings on the injectors, o-rings and crossover tubs, all checked out. still did the same thing after i put it all back …

Hello everyone. I have a question hopefully someone has an answer. I recently purchased a quadzilla for my 2001 24 valve. I purchased a tune from this page and I can’t get it to import onto the quadzilla app. I’m on an iPhone through WiFi. Any suggestions?

  6. Ok, The 2002 I have has 140hp injectors in it. The thing can smoke like a train fired on wet leaves until the turbo spools if I have the sub levels on the Comp over 2. It has good power and adequate fueling at higher RPM as well, and can overload the turbo if I am not careful. Overall the truck has more than enough power, I don't need more. I've lit up the new 285 BFGs on dry pavement while rolling before, much to the wife's dismay. :lmao:What I do want, is to keep the timing of the Comp at 5, while reducing a bit of fuel at higher RPM and a fair amount less at lower RPM. Ideally, I would change to smaller injectors, but since I have a smarty and edge, why not do it …

  7. . Anyone have experience with them? I recently picked up a set of used Industrial Injection Dragon Flow Stage IV (150HP) injectors. The II Dragon Flows are a bit unique in the fact that they have a 10-hole EDM honed nozzle (6 large primary holes / 4 small ancillary holes). The 4 smaller holes are designed for better fuel atomization and control at lower RPM's (less smoke).

Hey guys I'm curious what the symptoms of failure are for my stock sticks. They have 125k on them and my truck seems to surge lightly on idle and almost miss a little bit at hwy speeds. Let's a good puff of blue smoke on startup buts god away almost immediatly please help me! Thanks also if seems like my power kind of went away but I can't say that for sure! Thanks

I have a small leak on injector line #6 rite where it connects to the injector tube. It looks like the threads are leaking a small amout. But enough that when it sits for a bit it usually doesnt start first time. Like it has to prime itself again, but starts no problem an runs fine after that. Im looking to replace the line soon. Just wondering if anyone has tried some thread sealer tape to quick fix the problem?! Just wondering if its worth the time to do the quick fix or if it even works

I found these videos very helpful for understanding the operation of different designs. P-Pump VE-Pump Governor Operation: This is not an automotive governor but instead a marine one. On automotive governors it has basically the same thing, but the governor operates at all RPM's to help maintain speed when load is applied. …

Hey guys, was on the computer last night doing some research on possibly getting some RV275's for some better mpg and ran across a thread that has got me thinking. I bought my truck being told it was stock and I've only done to it what's in my sig. My question is how much smoke does a stock cummins make. I know every truck is different but my truck sends a puff of black smoke out everytime it cranks and smokes through every gear. I'm not blacking out the road by any means but it is noticable. How would I check to see if there is a programmer on my truck without having the programmer. Oh and what does everyone think about the RV275's. I've read they are the best ban…

  12. #1 - I'm not an expert, and don't really have any personnel experience on the subject. #2 - This info is probably not going to be dead on or 100% true, but that's kinda gonna be the point of this thread. I want opinions voiced, and I want to be corrected if I'm wrong. Some of this info is old news to some of you, but I hope it could help some newbs that are wanting to upgrade injectors and/or turbo(s). First I'm going to post roughly how much horsepower a specific size 7 hole injector will add: (I use 7 hole, because it is the most common injector in a 24 valve - 6, 7, and 8 hole can be used on a 24V) 7x.0071 = Stock HO 7x.0075 = Stock SO 7x.0079 = RV275 7x.008 = +60HP/…

Anyone know what type of steel is used on diesel fuel injector tips? Has to be pretty good steel to help stop premature wear. To also fight against dirty fuel wearing out the tip. Another question too is how do they adjust them to get a balanced flow match?

  14. Well first off I would like to thank Cajflynn for the wonderful donation of his used RV275 injectors, which happen to show up in todays mail. i'll get some pics up soon... In the mean time I'm going to gather up a few supplies for installing them. Does anyone know where I can get copper shims and fresh O-rings for these??? Holy Cow!!! I looked up the numbers on the injector and... 0432193635 / 4183 Comes back as either a RV275 or a 300 HP injector... Still much better than stock! http://forum.mopar1973man.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=60&stc=1&d=1260397958 http://forum.mopar1973man.com/attachm…

My first time posting in here. I don’t know if I’m posting in the correct section or not so, my apologies if I’m not. I need some enlightenment from the knowledge you guys have. I’m looking to get around 475-525 hp. I currently have a fass 165, quadzilla adrenaline with comp tunes, all necessary gauges and a S&B intake. The turbo I have my eye on is a Smeding SM-S362-68-14CM. What I’m wondering is what size injectors I’m gonna need to fuel that turbo and keep the EGTs reasonable. Truck is a 2000 24 Valve auto. Thanks. Thinking of this turbo because it’s fairly easy to get here in Canada

So I've been searching the forums and ran into a few topics about some aftermarket injectors will not only give more hp/tq but also increase fuel mileage. One of these injectors are the rv275s. I see they are good for about +40hp/80tq over stock injectors and somehow get better fuel mileage? Are there any other injectors that do the same and how does an injector which can supply more fuel give better MPGs? I am a little lost on the theory of this. If the engine requires "X" amount of fuel at the rpm and load..how does a different injector give better fuel mileage when it is producing the same "X"?? Is it the spray pattern? School me please

I am hopefully putting in DAP 7x.0085 Sacs this week. Truck is stock performance wise. No electronics yet. Will I need anything else along with this? ie boost fooler, elbow? I have never gone the injector first route before but this vehicle has given me a decent $$ hit so I am holding off on electronics. I know the HO pump responds better to injectors than electronics so I figure I should at least get a nice little bump. Worst case Ontario I have new injectors.

  20. Here's my story... You can't swing a dead cat on any cummins forum without hearing about fuel pressure to the dreaded vp44, I get it and after much reading understand the pay a little now or a lot later situation. So After installing a fuel pressure gauge (discovered importance from same forums) I was appalled to find out I had 8psi at idle and approaching 0psi at wot... Son of a.... Ok clam down, what's the next step? Swap out the lift pump, dooh it's in the tank and who likes dropping a fuel tank. I've reading endlessly about airdog etc pumps and think that's what I need but what about my pump being in the tank... And damn they're expensive. So here's what I did and …
