Fuel leak
Who is that?

P1689
What did you say you had for fuel pressure? Try to stay between 15 and 19 if you can. I say 15 even though 14 is okay, but in testing both of my trucks I'm finding variations with fuel pressure gauges, so to be safe........ Also don't get in a hurry buying an ECM just yet wait to try some more things as a new ECM could present even more problems.

Tree damage
Thats too bad, I'm glad you got out of the way. The insurance may total the RV, but if their offer is good enough you can buy it back and get it repaired... be money ahead sometimes.

Screeching noise
On my 02 I had a screech after letting it sit for a few weeks. Didn't know what it was so I changed the water pump, idler pulley wheel and bearing and put on a new belt. All is well now.
-
blew a belt, now oil leak.
So Killer have you looked over this plastic access cap and tube first?

Fuel leak
Dipley, I thought I remember that you got back there once and changed the sealing washers. Is that correct?

blew a belt, now oil leak.
Do third gens have the plastic oil breather up front covering the injection pump gear? I'm thinking this plastic cover, if located there, is far more likely to have an oil leak or crack than anything else.

Filling oil filter when changing oil?
Thanksalot Dipley I would plug in the block heater because even in my temps where I don't need it much I see quicker oil pressures at start up even in + 28 degrees.

Spicer ball joints
So you know for sure its not the unitized bearings that have the play?

Spicer ball joints
I'm sorry you are going thru this. Are you sure they are wearing that much? Dieselfuture says even new ones have a bit of play in them. He knows..... he changed his for no reason he found out

Track bar
Mine was clunking noise from the lower axle end so a guy at source automotive used a large cordless impact wrench and just tightened up the bolt located there and clunk went away.

Fuel leak
I have two of these trucks and often wondered how I would get to that Tee if it ever leaked. I often think about making a plank scaffold that allows me to lay belly down over the engine. Maybe getting some 2x10's or 12's with four step ladders used for support. I would hate the thought of someone doing all this though and find it did not work out at all. Maybe something simpler perhaps Hang glider harness and bag attached to the shop above

CR Injector failures and upset owners
That is a sad state of affairs and hope people own up to their causing it. I began to be suspect of Wix a couple years ago for no reason other than I saw they were made in one of the third world countries. Can't remember, but the reason I looked was because the quality seemed to be more light weight or cheap for some reason when picked out of the box. Now even more thankful your sharing this experience. While becoming friends with the pump guy at my local Chevron, he told me that the owner never fills the underground diesel tank full and tries to slowly get rid of whats on the bottom of the tank. Went on to say that I should not be filling up there anymore. I don't know how true that was, but my clear filter bowl used to have some sediment and little bits of water I had to drain off about every two weeks.

Stock Carter Fuel Lift/Transfer Pump...Replacement Quesiton
Yes you have to prime the system. I usually bump the starter a few times having two of the injection lines loosened, just a little, to help refill the factory filter and let the air out. When you see fuel weeping out of the loosened H/P lines re tighten them and crank over till it starts. Rough running at first it will smooth out as long as there are no other leaks in the fuel system. Side note; even with a big line kit installed on my truck, the carter pump could only marginally keep up with the requirements of the VP44 injection pump. Also, I avoided driving my truck till I got a fuel pressure gauge installed.

CR Injector failures and upset owners
It's very cool that you guys seeing these things first hand are able to share with us on this forum. Thankyou. 04Mach1, did you determine the source of the metal fragments or shavings in the fuel system? Also do you know who built the turbos?

Filling oil filter when changing oil?
Yeah, last time I heard, Gov't testing lab found feathers melting with a heat gun test

I hate to spill the beans, but did you guys know Dripley drinks synthetic beer !?

CR Injector failures and upset owners
What a sad state of affairs. A shame to do that to what was once a great bit of engineering.

16+ more years
Pretty tight looking old truck. I can tell you take care of it. Take a second to think what it takes to accumulate the information required to make a truck more reliable. New trucks do not have this advantage. If you know what the weak points are and proactive about fixing them making them immune to trouble that's the best place to be. It a good feeling knowing your rig well enough that your gut tells you when she is ready for another nice long run. It's not hard to feel that way if you know your truck.

Is there another name for it so I can figure out what PRV you are talking about? Thanks for sharing.

16+ more years
Watch out for Dieselfuture he likes wrenchin' so much... fixes his truck even when nothin' wrong Actually he knows way more about making it reliable than anything. My last Cummins 12 valve lasted about 450k miles and drove it for 20.5 years as a work truck. Never anything major till it needed a turbo and Trans rebuild near the last mos I had it. It was a good truck and would have kept it longer if I knew more about taking care of it during those years
