2nd Generation Dodge Non-Powertrain

Discussion of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel non-power train. This includes interior, air conditioning, heating, lighting, body, suspension, brakes, stereos, etc.

  1. My friends, I'm trying to understand the bushings that are on these tailgates. I'm confused on part #17 and #1 on the diagram. I just ordered two of the #17; those are the bushings that sit on the bed and the pivots (#5/#16) slide into (hence why it says 2 for quantity). I'm just confused as to what the #1 is for on the diagram. It says you only need one (1) of them? Right hand side only? It's weird because when I look up the part number it looks like what I just ordered (2nd photo). Again, I'm just confused on whether or not I need to replace another part (#1) or if I am missing it all together? I'm replacing this #17 because the tailgate…

I know this topic has been beat to death, but i really need some help with my fuel pressure gauge. A few months ago I purchased an Isspro ev2 fp gauge, autometer snubber, and bigline kit. I install everything, and from day one the gauge has flucktuated. At idle in continuously goes back and forth from 20-18 psi and wot 14-16 psi. After doing a little research I found many recommend that a needle valve be used. i have been putting it off because after the install a had a hard time getting the truck to start probably due to air in the lines. The bigline kit replaces the banjo bolt at the vp44 with a tapped 90 degree fitting. I installed the snubber in the tapped 90 degree f…

  3. My 01 Cummins has the worst heater output compared to the other two Dodge Cummins 4x4 pickups I had. They would roast me out of the cab and cause me to turn the temperature down. This pickup I leave on high and it's still not hot like it should be. I've always had a lack of heat and lack of cold AC with this rig. I already put a brand new heater core and evaporator core in it, new NAPA 190° t-stat, new water pump, new radiator, new radiator fan clutch, new blower motor, new hvac reastat, and heater treater blend door adapter. My EJWA says it's running at 190° at full temp while driving it. I timed the factory blend door…

Well, I think I found the reason for my spongey brakes...all pads, rotors and calipers have been replaced/resurfaced in the last 2 years. Can anyone confirm this leak can hinder braking before I yank it? Thanks

The only rust out spot on my truck is the LF fender so I cut out the rust & butt welded in some 16G metal patches. I need to get behind the plastic fender liner to get some paint & under coat. How do I pop out the plastic retainers. Mine look like they have rivits, so after I pull 'em they're probably toast right? Just cut the heads? Where do I get good ones that hold this well? I bought others that just slide in and are like shredded but don't really hold well. What do you all use & get them?I used those cheapie ones for my stock air filter cover base & they don't really hold that well! I don't what my liner falling while I'm driving! Thanks,Dave

I made this a few weeks ago and figured I would post it up. Basically this shows some principles at work especially how the connecting rod angles and leverage play a key role in everything. This is only showing the thing compressing and then decomopressing, such as if no fuel was injected. I am not about to try and calculate that These charts assume no boost, 100% volumetric efficiency, 14.7psi atmospheric, 100% sealed off rings, and all the other crap that I don't care to figure out at this point. Took enough time to do with all perfect conditions so I am not going to factor in all this other crap. The goal was to see the effect of the crank to connecting rod angl…

  8. @mace, I have performed the power steering pump and vacuum pump conversion that you brought to this site. I hope you are still perusing the site and will see this. The time and effort spent on this project (and the APPS relocate) has been very worthwhile. Much engine space has been freed up and the power steering reservoir is right where it should be for easy fluid check / fill. The reservoir is like the brake master cylinder reservoir – you can see the fluid level through the reservoir. An unexpected benefit is that this direct mount power steering pump outperforms any previous power steering pump that has been on this truck. There is no more …

I'm going to be purchasing a new dashboard after the first of the year and I'm looking for some input. I know Geno's has one for $330 and LMC has one for $220 that includes the vents on the side. Does anyone here have any experience with either of these replacement dashes? Obviously I'd prefer to go with LMC due to cost but don't want it to bite me in the butt down the road. ETA: Found an OEM replacement for $230 free shipping. I've heard the OEM replacement dashes are now made with ABS plastic but I'm not 100% sure. I asked the seller about it so I'll see what they say.

Both my trucks alternators are showing the voltage of leaking AC to be too high, around .29 V ac. Is there such a thing as a filter to filter out the AC noise?

On Monday I took my alternator into the local shop and he called me yesterday to tell me it was just worn out. He showed me this morning the brushes were virtually gone and the slip rings were worn down almost 1/8” (radius). Why I didn't take photos I don't know, other than I really needed to be on my way to work after just buying a new one from him. I asked him it he thought it could be the OEM unit, and he said almost certainly. Not bad life at 346k miles! I put the last +70k miles on it. SURELY at some point it was rebuilt, or maybe someone swapped in a unit from a salvage truck; the little plastic cover has the Chrysler symbol on it.

  13. Looking for some connectors like the ones used on the cummins motors in dodge trucks, appear to be waterproof. Look like good quality. I was looking for some to use to quickly unhook and reconnect things like a 12v fuel pump for my aux diesel tank. --- Update to the previous post... appear to be made by Deutsch, but I can't find a retail outlet

I've got a good bit of rust on the old girl and I can't stand it much more. I have looked at LMC and on partsgeek.com for body panels but I'm not sure of the quality. Anyone know of a good place to get quality body panels at a reasonable price. Kinda been scared to check dealer pricing. Thanks.

There's a fuse for the B/U lights, but appears to be IGN energized. I'm looking for a backup light wire (Violet/Black) under the dash somewhere, that's accessible. I'm wiring in a backup camera, and I need to tag that wire somewhere around the dash, rather than running a 20'wire bact to the lights, or the sensor at the trans.Thanks.

  17. Manufacturer of new hub assemblies for my 1999 Ram 2500 4X with TD says it's okay to have slop between the hub and knuckle since the four bolts will hold the hub in place, no problem. I say baloney, since the bolts should not be subject to any shear load, the purpose of the chamfered faces between the hub and knuckle. Additionally, OEM interference fit caused large problem in getting hub removed from knuckle. Unclear in Shop Manual whether interference fit required. Request advise.

Mike has answered all my past questions but here are some more. You guys probably don't believe that I was a diesel fleet mechanic and shop superintendent for 30 years. I think I have forgotten more than I ever learned and this new stuff has just passed me up since my retirement. Question: I have a vacuum pump that sucks 20 inch of vac. Is that enough to vacuum an AC system after disassembly? At NAPA buying my evaporator and thought I would just buy some compressor oil while I was there. There are 4 different kinds in the same brand. Which type do I use? I really should bring this truck up to mike and have him show me some spots to hunt chuckars with my bird dog before I …

My truck chatters upon launch at almost any rpm idle or not. I think it has a aftermarket clutch in it, is there anything else that you guys can think of that would cause this? I've been under the truck looking for loose items but cannot seem to find anything that is loose (driveline, rearend shackles etc.)Thanks.If you really really really hit the clutch just right at a idle you can get it to drive without chattering but thats it.. Its really annoying when pulling a big trailer.

Hello to all. I have been studying the thread about wiring driving/fog lamps but have not found the precise answers to my query.(http://forum.mopar1973man.com/threads/6783-Fog-light-wiring?p=64203#post64203) I understand that the wiring diagram is the way to go if you would like to add an additional switch, but on my 00 2500 CTD, I have the factory switch, less the factory bumper or lights, and also after checking out a truck on a local lot, the factory wiring harness. I had fog lamps that were not hooked up when I purchased the truck, but they were broken, not wired and non-operable. I bought some enexpensive lights, and started wiring per instructions. I have two wire l…
