2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

  1. As best I can describe it, if anyone has been driving a car when the catalytic converter melts down or plugs up the engine gets generally sluggish and struggles under its own weight. Throttle works but no not really because its just bogging it further in a sense. Or how about those of us with Edge tuners who take off driving before it loads and you get that sudden burst of power when it does start working. That sudden contrast between no tune and tune. However in my case only 200 yards prior i was running the tune and it just suddenly fell on its face then as i said its a sudden burst of power when it clears up. I hope that description makes sense …

Well gang... I made a trip down to Mountain Home ID in poor weather and the outside temp was ranging between 50-70*F and the IAT was range 85*F to 110*F. Now what I found out with cold wet weather is that it tends to kill off the MPG rather quickly. Now with flooded highways and cold moist air just pulled my MPG's down to about 18 MPG which happens to be about -2 off from my typical normal. Now the Next day making a routine trip to Riggins, ID I still came back to my typical 20 MPG average but the weather was dry for the moment, warmer, and IAT was staying more so in the 100-110*F bracket.

My fuel pressure has been doing weird things. Running 8psi cold (42*) and gradually gets higher as outside temp and engine temps come up. But overall it's been falling. Running 15psi warm. I kicked up the pressure to 15 cold and now goes up to 22psi warm. A better range. But a month ago it was low consistent and I raised it back up. Sound like a raptor issue? I also have a vibration/buzz coming through my cab gauge. Isspro with snubber from vulcan. It quiets down if I pull it out a half inch or so. The gauge has a vibration that you can feel if you pull it clear out of the pillar. I don't have a test gauge. I'll check with a few locals to see if they have one.

My truck 01 cummins has been sitting 2 days with block heater plugged in. I'm out side today and I look over and witness a leak just start and drip a good sized puddle. So I investigate and it's coming out of the cap on the power steering. I took off the cap and it's over flowing. Any ideas?

  5. This where you need to go in concerns to asking questions on fuel additives and 2 cycle oil. Welcome to the forum and ask lots of questions. ;)

Well after working through several issues as yall know I was finally able to get myself a quadzilla adrenaline. I got it installed this afternoon and have it on default settings it came with and just kept bumping it up just messing around only made it to 7 till I got home, kinda scary... and no smoke-kinda expected alot since these huge injectors...? I guess, who can help me paid or unpaid 😁 get something setup for everything in my sig but note the pump may or may NOT be a dragonflow, this is still a mystery. Now to go try and school myself on how to get things setup, power levels, different profiles etc... so much to do!

  10. I got 400 miles on my rear end after putting the truetrac in it and I seem to like the gear style lsd the word that comes to mind is smooth I had to go up a small 30 degree incline today to take parts to a shed in wed grass and it did what it was supposed to locked stayed locked went at a crawl in 2 wd ect on the road it's like it's not there I'm impressed so my rear has the eaton/Detroit truetrac revolution gears timkin bearings heat guned it today after 1hour of 65 125 degrees hmm

Recently my egts have been dropping down to 100-110 at idle. They drop really fast. They used to have a hard time getting down to 300 before I installed injectors. Not sure if this is normal. Even after pulling into a gas station they are down where before I would have to wait a bit or let the timer do the shutdown. Not sure if I have a bad probe or this is normal or something else. Seems strange to me and thinking something is wrong.

So for quite sometime now, been driving like a hyper miler. Or atleast, I thought. Try to drive within the power band, coast to lights, use brakes as little as possible. So I got the idea, let's see how I do driving like a normal person. So instead of driving in2nd gear, to keep the rpms up, I drive normally letting the transmission determine the gear. I went from an approximate 400 miles per tank to an approximate 600 per tank. I gained another 200 miles by just keeping the gear selector in drive!!! Now I'm going to try and see what else I can squeeze from this puppy!

I have been dumping good bit of $$$ to make this truck the best it can be. I recently got the front end in order.. removing leveling kit, poly bushings in upper and lower control arms, new track bar, steering box and brace.. added a deep trans pan and gauge.. new injectors.. brakes and lines all the way around including the Chevy 1 ton cylinders.x What can/should I do to my truck for performance & reliability.. besides routine/preventive maintenance? That's a given.. Most importantly for towing my camper anywhere I'd like to go (long distance.) Getting an exhaust brake is high on my priority list. Other things I'm thinking about are.. an oil bypass sys…

Since all fluid is never drained unless the trans gets rebuilt, is it okay to mix ATF +4 with ATF+3 trans fluid that stays in the VB and TC? My truck has to get ready for a 1400 miler running with, heaven forbid....... IBMobile His coffee like burnt trans fluid, but wakes up old pliestocene fossils like me.

I've been doing some shopping for an exhaust system but not sure what to get. I have a buddy with a 2nd gen 24 valve that built his own 5" and just put in a muffler from a big truck. Sounds really awesome but he complains about having a bad drone in the cab. Another friend has a 3rd gen with a 4" system (not sure what brand it is) and he complains about the drone too. The cab drone is my biggest concern since I do some fairly heavy pulling and I don't want to have to wear ear plugs:lol:

  16. I've decided to start a thread specifically for detailing the path to restoring the truck back to proper, full functioning condition. I replaced the radiator with a fully aluminum one that's welded and brazed. Ebay special, $225 shipped. Actually looks to be quite nice. Even has a proper threaded bung for the petcock. I also started work on the rear axle. All four bearings show pitting and damage. I found that both seals have been replaced before and the surfaces are both shot. They had been replaced with speedi sleeves and they were both worn. Drivers s…

  17. As the title states, I'm not sure what either one of these is. I've tried Iooking them up on here, and on Google, but no dice. I come from a gasser background, so idk heads or tails with my truck. All new to me. If anyone can explain any of this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

  18. I put down a number I am pretty impressed with last weekend. Now we are debating on trying to make it to 750hp on the SO without nitrous. A friend of mine thinks we are already pretty close to the highest power SO pump. So I figured I’d ask you guys since this is probably the biggest active group of VP guys. Dyno was at an old gasoline hot rod shop so it was only set up for 1,200 max torque. FullSizeRender.mov Oh and the tach pickup kept falling off which is why torque drops off on both pulls and print out is in MPH.

When I purchased my truck, it came equipped with a performance tuner. I didn't know what it was, what it did, or how it worked.I later found out it was a Quadzilla, not sure exactly which one. Must be one of the older ones, because the one I have, I couldn't find on their website. I started messing with it and realized none of the features I had set would work. Now, I don't know how many of you know much about these Quadzillas but, i'm debating on wether or not I should keep it on the truck.Under the hood I found a disconnected EGT sensor. I don't know if it belongs to the the Quadzilla specifically, or if it's factory. But, it could be why nothing on this thing works, wh…
