Rattlesnake Fire, Idaho - 2018
Same here in Idaho we are now finding out. The requirements of working with USFS is too steep for even my Fire Chief. Still, we are prepared for protecting the people in our district. Even though we have training for wildland, structure, vehicle extrication, etc. We are no longer able to work with USFS because we don't meet the requirements. Same here. At least the winds are up just enough to clear the smoke. Yeah, I'm hoping for the rains but I realize its another month away for us. At least we don't have dry lightning storms. (Ugh!) As for our local fire dept we are down volunteers. There is only a handful of us willing to do the dirty work of taking care of the trucks, sheds, equipment, etc. Then there is people within the Fire Dept and community upset with the way this fire is being handled. Why not ban together envoke change? Start small. I'm trying my darnest to back my Fire Chief right now so to lighten his load allowing him to attempt at evoking change for us. When a person is overworked then they are more apt to just giving in and quitting. I'm trying to help even to keep moving forward even one tiny step to even the smallest amount of change. As for the religious side. There is a lot of "Let's pray" happening here but very few people want to support anyone. As for MoparMom and myself yes we are religious natured people. Mom is the prayer warrior. I'm the muscle to getting things done. More or less if I prayed every time something went wrong I would be in worse shape. Like saving Mom's life even though I ran downstairs to say a quick prayer the action of me getting her to the hospital saved her life. I feel the prayer gave me the strength to endure what I was going to face and have the strength to keep going. 2 years later we (MoparMom and myself) are still going. Comes back to... Good Lord helps those to help themselves. Bingo!

Sorry but no. Because of the all the flash programming that is required to make it "fit" your truck. You could buy a used ECM and ask around for someone to flash it for you. Way too many version of software and options to just have one available. I understand your issue but there isn't many solutions to getting around this.

Nope. You need a DVM that has a mV AC function. Common problem. You need to look towards a Fluke or similar for a mV AC scale.

No. Sorry the delay is caused by memory issues during booting. Our ECM is just like a laptop computer on a smaller scale. It has a CPU, memory, hard drive (PROM) and a BIOS. So basically this all occurs in mere microseconds. When the key is turned on the BIOS tells the CPU to boot the PROM content into RAM and execute the first instruction which is Wait To Start light and grid heater (if the IAT is low enough). That lag your seeing is the bootup process going bad. During the boot up it has a checksum to verify the contents of the code is correct and when the checksum is wrong it reboots again till it matches. The ECM can't do anything till that bootup process completes. What went wrong? Basically, the AC noise from a failed alternator abused the memory and other components of the ECM this typically stems from people do the lame tin foil mod, or ground wire relocation (old school), or adding noise filters to the PCM for shifting issues (automatic). This give a fail sense of completed repair and the AC noise is just masked from showing. It still beating on the transistors and diodes of the ECM. There was a span of time we all though VP44 where weak and failed because of different reasons. Now knowing the AC noise issue and how to stop it VP44 and ECM failures are rare. How to fix? The only solution is to send the ECM to be rebuilt by one of the rebuilders we have on the list. How to prevent this from happening? I would replace the alternator and verify the AC ripple voltage is a passing grade. Like our test of measuring the idle AC voltage at the BATT terminal of the alternator typically lands at 30mV AC which is passing. Full load test could be much higher. Now you can do the W-T ground wire mod. The simple version...

4X4 bearing Hubs and ABS Discussion....
Bingo. Like I've been saying all along with tire size and tread pattern. Even lift kits and leveling kits impact the MPG more so than bearing / unlocking hubs. I always that it was funny I'm running a solid axle to this day I still hold the MPG record even about CAD axle design. This proves that axles and hub design aren't going to make an MPG change. Actually, the driveshaft still turns but at a much slower rate. The drag of the cold gear lube prevents the driveshaft from turning faster. Like my 96 Dodge has the CAD axle it has not made big leaps in MPG at all. Now what I'm planning on picking up on Tuesday will make a huge improvement. I'm dumping the 235/85 R16 and going to a 215/85 R16 tire. Increasing the final ratio and reducing the engine load from the excessively low final ratio. Then with the tire being narrower and 1-inch shorter is going to reduce the rotational mass more.

Rattlesnake Fire, Idaho - 2018
God help those that help themselves. In other words don't take the easy path of just praying. Go out and do something to improve things around you. Even a small step is better than nothing. What I see is a lot of lukewarm souls out there. I get tons of people asking me to pray for this or that. But, these same people do nothing to fix or aid others. Its about giving up time of your personal time and helping other around you without payment. Like myself I volunteer time to fire fighting, search and rescue. Even taking care of my own mother. So for those just passing prayers around might actual do better by actions than nothing at all. Like I consider myself blessed because none of our property burned not one bit. My neighbor next door lost all the trees on their land above their place. Like myself I gain my place with the Good Lord by doing what I can. Add-on... Look at it this way you could get 4,500 members here all praying. Mostly likely nothing would happen. Now if you got 4,500 member here all volunteer time to aid others or support people in need and a lot could be done. Could you imagine if everyone here volunteered time to fight this fire it would be out long time ago. Imagine if you had 4,500 people volunteering time to ANY cause or aiding there neighbor this world would be a much better place.

ABS kicking it when coming to slow stop
Neither. The only thing that controls the ABS is the module itself. Master and hydroboost have nothing to do with the ABS at that point.

Spent some time at the Fire Chief place working on trucks and fixing things today. Fire is still burning and heading south and west of us.

Be careful there... ECM software there is roughly 53 different versions of software out there. Don't randomly just buy an ECM. Then there is change up like cam and crank sensors to just cam sensor (which actually is the crank sensor when you look at pin numbers). Software wise there was differences between automatics and manuals. Then I've found some versions of ECM software not all compatible with all years of PCM's. Remember the PCM is the primary computer and the ECM is secondary! If it came down to ECM replacement I would suggest one of the rebuilder over risky buying of someone else ECM that may or may not work for you! Battery cables. I would just rebuild the ends with fresh military terminals and copper lugs soldered to the cable.

Can't do a prime cycle after the engine has been ran. Turn the key off wait 30 seconds. This allows the ECM to fully shut down. Now bump the starter. It should run the 25 seconds. If the engine has ran for any length of time the prime cycle is locked out. This prevents the ECM from running the prime cycle during a vehicle accident. That could be air in the fuel possibly. What is your fuel pressure like? Does the fuel pressure snap to pressure instantly or does it slowly rise up? You may just have a suction air leak and pulling air into the system but we need to know what you fuel pressure is like during these times. Here watch a video I made...(Kind of old) Watch the first crank cycle you'll hear the air bubble get to the lift pump then the pressure falls right off. This was as a suction air leak. This why I re-did the second time because now you can see the 50% duty cycle of the ECM pulsing the lift pump. The P1689 code could be caused by a bad fuel pump relay (no power to the VP44). Again ECM that is braindead will not pulse the lift pump at all nor will the VP44 fire up.

4X4 bearing Hubs and ABS Discussion....
So now are you willing to jack up your truck every spring and repack the front bearings? This means washing out the old grease and inspecting the rollers and the race. Then hand packing the bearing again. Then set the preload of the bearing. I'm going to assume it like my old 1972 Dodge were you going to need a custom socket for getting the nuts of the spindles. Then there is some sort of locking tab or pin. These wear out too so will you be able to get replacement lock? Then the mechanical locking hubs. I remember blowing up 2 sets on my 1972 Dodge 250. First set of Warn hubs snapped them like aluminum junk. The second set I broke pulling a logs downhill and left me hanging. I had to be towed off the hill to get the log off me. The chain was pulled tight and couldn't free myself. Something about unit bearing. No locking hubs to mess with, no bearings to pack with grease, no parts to inspect, they last at least 150k miles. Like myself, I need to jack up my truck and quick inspection of the bearings for roughness or looseness.

Well, I would check for error codes first after the IOD fuse is replaced. IAT sensor errors (hi or lo volt codes) might play a role in the light issues. P0381 code basically, in a nutshell, is an error for wiring to the WTS light which may be present. On warm summers days it doesn't take much for keeping the WTS light to a very short bulb test. Now if the WTS light doesn't come on the engine will not start or run at all. This would be a sign of the ECM failure because the very first instruction is to light the WTS light up and check grid heaters. If the ECM doesn't boot up, the power relay will not turn on for the VP44 or turn on the lift pump will not power up either.- Quadzilla V2 Custom Tunes
Something to keep in mind. I've got my OEM Injectors yet in a box. I've kept them around for fallback injectors for just in case moments where I would need to change injectors for some reason. Finally, I sent them into DAP for pop testing and learn a bunch from just having them tested. Normal range is 293 bar (4,250 psi) to 327 bar (4,750 psi). My OEM injectors where popping as low as 240 bar (3,480 psi) the atomization was poor and getting more or less like a squirt gun effect going. Larger droplets and just overall poor fuel spray. The funny part is they still work fine show no signs of performance issue other than MPG's off just a little bit. The only way you going to diagnose this issue properly is pop testing. IR gun will tell you if one isn't work ing right. Still, in all, you have to pull all 6 injectors so they can be pop tested and flow matched again. There is nothing you can do where you just pull one injector and hope for a first.- Hello, new guy from Oklahoma

Missed one. The IOD fuse. Has the little Yellow cover. Flip the lid open and pull the fuse out. IOD (Ignition Off Draw) fuse is blown for sure its the one that does the doom lights, radio, OBDII port etc. Pull the alternator and have it bench tested. Make sure they test for ripple AC voltage. Two things cover the positive cables with engine oil they will never rot again. Then the only reason why the acid on to like that either the batteries are over charging or the batteries are damaged. So again here we are testing the alternator again and the batteries. Since the PCM can't detect AC voltage charging it can stack up on the charging.- 4X4 bearing Hubs and ABS Discussion....

You can't... What you lose... Cruise control Speedometer ECM ability to cancel grid heaters. Way too many things wrapped around the ABS computer to ditch. Nothing gained. The driveshaft doesn't take that much to spin free. Even the CAD unit front axles don't gain that much over solid lock axle. - Need help think I may have a bad ecm
