  1. What aftermarket filter provides the same or increased airflow and filtration? While not setting a CEL on a 6.7?
  2. Very interesting on the fuel, I thought it got COLD there. Everywhere I have bought fuel in the NW winterized at the pump. The only exceptions are a few stations I have seen in MT that offer 1, 2, and 50:50 year round.
  3. Nothing I have done to the motor has been near the pump, nor would it have an effect. The missing tooth on the cam gear is odd, but right now we are thinking its a result of damage to the crank gear thou still unknown.Aside from some marks on the side of the idler gear where it was contacting the housing the gears look fine. There is no indication that anything went thru the gears to cause the breakage. I think anything that would have gone thru the gears to break the housing would have dislodged the idler gear, but it didn't. Hopefully more will be known by the end of the week.
  4. The only time I have ever gelled was in my 20um filter, the 5um and 3um were fine. When the parafins gel they are larger than 20um. I wonder if the duramax has as good of fuel heater as our trucks? It also explains the FASS issue, no heater. Is the fuel in your area not winterized? The last place I filled up was already running a 10% #1 blend, plus additive. By the time the temps get down around 0 the mix is pretty close to 50:50, but advertised as #2.
  5. Surprisingly the pump still worked. As far as micron ratings of the filters Cummins offers 2 different filters, and Mopar a 3rd with many others on the approved list. Micron rating is not the most important thing, it's flow rating. The filter I use has better flow properties than OEM. To say a failure of any kind, let alone this, is based on cleaner oil is ignorant any way you look at it. Lack if flow means heat, and heat leaves marks and there are none. Not to mention that the oil pump is lubed by pre filtered flow, so even it the filter limited flow the pump lubrication would not be effected. The the biggest issue I have seen Cummins dislike about several filters is ones like Fram that come apart and clog piston cooling nozzles.
  6. On my way to elk camp I developed a whine from the engine. I presumed it was the vacuum pump failing and removed the belt to install my non-vacuum pump belt. While the belt was off I started the motor to verify the noise was belt driven, it wasn't, pointing to a gear noise. Due to my remote location I drove the truck 15 miles to camp, 45 miles closer than town. I shut the truck down and waited. Two days later I started the truck and the noise was present instantly and got much louder when the oil pressure came up, I have a real gauge. This further led me, and my mechanic, the believe it was the gear train. We decided I should have it towed, and my insurance covered the tow (what a PITA) 255 miles to the shop. The truck got delivered yesterday and the mechanic got the timing cover off today, and it's amazing I made it to camp. The oil pump housing broke right where the idler gear is. The broken housing caused the gear to contact the housing and allowed the gear to run crooked and damage the crank gear. Somehow the cam gear also has a broken tooth, probably from a piece of the broken housing contacting the gears. The oil filter was full of metal, some of which was copper colored. The magnet in the pan had some metal on it, but not overly fuzzy. The big questions are how much metal got thru the filer? I run a 15um filter vs the OEM 40um filter. How much contaminated oil splashed up on the crank and cylinders while I was driving after the failure? I probably put about 45-60 minutes of run time on it from when I heard the noise. Before hearing the noise I was doing 30-50 on a dirt road with mud tires, the noise could have been masked for several miles. What else is damaged that we cannot see?The engine is coming out this week.. time will tell how far we tear it down. But probably all the way if it's out. I will be rebuilding it with QSB early CR pistons and nozzles. I have 93k miles and 2800 hours on the motor, surely no where near soon enough for this kind of failure. I bought a Cummins because they don't this!!Have any of you seen this before? My mechanic hasn't. Sorry, no photos yet. I wasn't thinking about that when I got to the shop. On a positive note I had a great week with my dad and brother, and filled my elk and deer tags.
  7. My understanding is the larger change in angle and hole size needed flow the fuel for more than 700hp does not maintain the quality standard that BBi has. Why? They would have to answer that, and it doesn't mean it cannot be done it just means they aren't happy enough with the results to put their name on it. I'll be changing my pistons out to the 03-04 style here shortly, and hoping to just put 03-04 50hp nozzles on my injectors, but ???
  8. The PF7977 from Baldwin is the best you can fit in the OEM housing, it's 5um absolute.
  9. It has 42 3.75" pleats, and is 10" wide. That's 1575 sq/in of media.
  10. It's not a 3rd gen issue that I am aware of. What is your filter part number?
  11. It "should" have been able to pull thru it. But I once left my relay out and it died 2 block down the road.
  12. There is a very specific reason that the only OEM filter on my truck is the OEM one. If I ever go with twins I will keep the OEM box and OEM filter, most the BHAF's that people use are BIG but don't have the sq in of media or flow rates that is required.
  13. They have been out for 9 model years now, vs only 5 of the NV5600 with the big input shaft. Still not as many as a NV4500, but like I said if you are doing the swap why not go 6 speed. I understand it's a little more elbow grease to get it into a 2nd gen, but nothing crazy. There are 2 G56's, the early with lower gearing and the later with higher gearing.
  14. The gear ratios are similar, and again gearing has gone away from that. Think about that spacing when towing and no torque converter to unlock. What about a G56? As long as your not trying to push 600hp they are a good trans.
  15. If you tow and are going to do a manual swap why not get a 6 speed? There is a reason the 5 speed no longer exists.
  16. It certainly does sound like the lift pump. Even thou the in-tank units are very good they can fail. Do you know how many miles/hours are on the conversion pump?Check for loose wires or a blown fuse. If you bump the starter, turn to start and release before it fires, you should be able to hear the pump run for ~30 seconds.
  17. Since this is a CR thread, and your sig isn't filled out, I will assume a 3rd gen. 190° is the OEM temp. I have considered a 200° for winter use, hotter air and slightly better economy, and I will not increase fan operation since I don't tow in the winter.
  18. If you tow then it will mess with your fan settings. The max allowed temp, per Cummins, on a 180° is 212° which is below the 100% fan setting. 180° will also yield lower mileage. I have yet to figure out why people want a cooler thermostat.
  19. Your joking right? Read the news lately?
  20. I tow in 6th, and I am pretty sure my motor is putting out 950-1000 ft/lbs at the crank. AFIK there are no real confirmed issues towing with a NV5600 in 6th, with the exception of (possibly) the early release smaller input shaft models. What size tires do you have? Math will tell the answer for sure. I have 3.73's and want 4.10's in every gear but 5th.
  21. Is the swap complete?
  22. Very interesting, as it's power and not weight that effects the clutch's ability to hold. If the clutch is rated to hold 900 ft/lbs it shouldn't matter what is attached to the truck as long as you are under 900 ft/lbs. I know 3 people that were talked into a DD by SBC, local shops, and Valair they wish they hadn't. I also only know 3 people personally with DD's. The DD's do engage smooth and hold power, but they are stupid noisy at idle/low speed and have horrible vibrations at low rpms, especially when towing. I am curious to hear how it works out for you. - - - Updated - - - As far as hydraulics the SBC stuff is adjustable, Heavy Duty, and well priced.
  23. So I guess your weight at a measured distance on a breaker bar is what you need.
  24. What is the length of your current wrench?
  25. It's pretty interesting stuff for sure. I am outside the "effected" zone by mere miles, Michael and I certainly have front row seats. Much of what is going on is simply because of technology, everyone has the ability to know about everything in the world which has a way of spreading lots of gloom. How far back does recorded history go? It's not far enough in my opinion to make a lot of "end of the world" judgements. Global warming is getting it's dose of reality vs recorded history right now.
