2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. We recently purchased a 98.5 laramie slt, and we have fixed the boost sensor the tps and replaced the filter, we are now looking to replace the lift pump. We rented a fuel pressure gauge and hooked it up and we got idle pressure of 19 to 20 and reed pressure of 10 to 11, we have been told that it should run a constant pressure of at least 14 to 16. When we removed it we noticed some wires were cut, yellow with a white tracer going into the ecm and it is both wires. We have done a lot to this truck and we are at a loss, when we rev it up the pressure drops and the engine starts to run flat has no power. Please help us.

With a heavy heart, something broke in the transmission running along at 80 MPH. 5th gear failed with a horrid grinding sound. 1st to 4th still works find but there is a loose object for sure like a 5th gear nut. But you can't put it 5th it grinds bad.

I swapped a 02 Cummins into my F250. Mods are, fummins twin turbo kit, 125 DDP injectors, new springs, and arp studs. Also new VP 44 SO pump. Tunning is by quadzilla, but no custom tunes yet. The motor came out of a manual transmission truck, so I sent the ECM off to be reprogrammed for an automatic because of a massive lope. When I got it back, the lope was cured and it idle ok. When I drive the truck, it will only get to 1850 RPM and no farther. Acts like it has a governor on it. I purchased an automatic apps sensor and did the relearn on it and no help. Any suggestions???

Hey guys, quick question. I ordered a Nations 180A alternator for my 02 cummins. Is it a drop in/plug and play? Does anything need to be changed with it? I have the bosch 136A currently and am trying to reduce AC ripple.

  5. My brakes have been worse than normal lately and with new pads on the front, I knew it had to be the back. My driver side was all sludged with rear end oil so I guess there is a inner seal on the hub leaking.I got my axle out but there is some kind of little lock nut that I need to remove and ive never seen anything like it before. My jeeps never had anything like this full floater and I have never worked on one before so if you have any tips I would greatly appreciate it!

As promised. I forgot to take pictures yesterday when I did this, plus I did it a slightly different way than the way I am going to explain. My gauge I have had for years, I drilled the check valve out WAY bigger than when it came from snap on. This way, I can do a check without the rockers on...... Anyway. You will need to get your hands on. 1. A compression test gauge suitable for a diesel engine's high compression. I have a snap-on MT 33 B, as well as a C model. Both are good for 800 PSI. And use standard 1/4" snap in quick connect air tool fitting. 2. A compression test adapter. Looks like an injector and fits where the injector goes. For the ISB (98-2007 i…

For the first time my quadzilla was pegging my fuel temp over 160 and crept to 163 I was getting back to work so the truck is off. Is there any thing I can do about this? What could be the source? I haven't had gauges before now so who knows if this has happened before. Thoughts and ideas? Thanks!

Talking with my Son this morning, He told me his 99 has began making a "poping" sound when he accelerates while turning.I thought I would try to get some preinspection info, or advice before we drop the cover off this afternoon. He changed the pinion seal and gear oil last summer with some Oreilly brand synthetic, and not being there I`m not sure if its a limited slip or not??I know GM vehicles have required what everyone called a "fish oil" additive for clutch pack diffs.I`m hoping this is the best case scenario.

Can I Test for AC ribble with my Fluke multi meter? My local Alternator/ starter repair shop can check it again but I have to remove my alt. from my truck because he only does bench testing He also said there will always be some slight AC ripple. Is that true? .

Little background to leading up to this past week. Had the P0237 and P0112 codes with the original ECM. Replaced the MAP Sensor and IAT sensor first. Cleaned the grounds. Still had issues. Hooked it to a snap on code reader and could watch the voltage drop out to the sensors. Ordered an ECM from the number one place on the list here. Installed it. Great for 150 miles. Then got a buck and lost all throttle response. Then it came back, bucked again and then threw the P1689 code for no communication between the ECM and IP. While at the shop they went through everything using insight. Pump was dead. New pump installed. Same issue. No communication. Wiring checks out. B…

Bought my truck in September 2018. 2002 3500. Winter came and all I could get out of my dash vents on position 2 was 80°f. Position 3 was 75°f. Position 4 would blow cold air. Installed grill blanket, no change. Installed 190 NAPA thermostat, temp guage now runs slightly higher and more consistent but no change in vent heat temp. Installed heater treater, no change. Flushed heater core with hose, temp now at 110°f on fan setting 2 and 95°f on fan setting three. Guess I have a heater core replacement in my future. Watched Mopar mans vid and I'm going to wait till summer to do it because I have to work outside in my driveway....... Can't wait!!!!! …

Well onto the next item to fix...what appears to be a head gasket problem . I'm extremely certain that my issue is in fact a bad H.G. but I took a short video so you all can see what I see. The video was taken right after shutdown on a hot engine. What caught my attention, initially, was the upper radiator hose becoming quite firm upon squeezing it at operating temperature. For what it's worth, I had gotten some air into the system (changed the thermostat and radiator cap/went on a short drive up to operating temperature). I cant imagine these bubbles have anything to do with air being bled out on its' own? I did park the truck nose up and burped the system the best…

Unfortunately, while removing my injection pump, I dropped the keyway into the gear case. I'm going to fish around a bit more to see if I can get it out easily, but I know I'm likely looking at timing gear cover removal. The two things I'm wondering about are: - Whether or not it's necessary to replace the crank seal while you're in there - What gasket maker people prefer to use when reinstalling the timing cover I've searched quite a bit but have not found any solid answers. What do you guys think?

Hello everyone, I'm trying to to figure out what gear ratio would be best in my truck. It's a 2000 , 2500 ,automatic. Stock gears in it are 3:54 and I put 37 inch military tires on it.. I am planning on gearing it but I need advice and opinions on what ratio to have installed.... 4:10 ? Or 4:56? , if I do 4:10 I can use stock carriers, if I go 4:56 I have to buy new carriers. what is the best for towing or all around.

Hey all, As the title says I got a death wobble for the first time with this truck today. We were making the first half of the trip from old house to new and my truck was loaded to the brim with our stuff. Right about 1300 lbs worth between the cab and bed. Total weight was between 9 and 10k. I was driving south on I81 just before Syracuse doing about 65mph in 5th gear. I'm assuming I hit a bump, though I can't recall actually seeing one. Anyway it sent me into a violent death wobble. I know what it feels like because my dads old 1st gen used to do it pretty regularly. My sunflower seeds went everywhere, I had stuff falling on me from the back seat where it was stack…

At this point this is more a place holder that will be moved to a article if we can get stuff working with the Torque app that communicates with the ecm via a cheapo bluetooth obd2 adapter. Out of the box the app doesn't read much of anything. You get RPMS, load, coolant temp maybe. Very basic stuff, however you do have the ablity to enter custom PID's and have the app read values manually. Figure if we could read tranny temp, oil pressure, boost values etc it would be a VERY cheap way for some of the guys to get at least some of the gauges they need. MAP PID: p0102 from what I can see? so firstly, has anyone done this work yet? No point in…
