2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

In my 01 Sport Cummins HO 6 speed 4x4, I have 3.55 gears, 295/70R18 tires, 4" full exhaust system (no muffler), stock HX35, AFE intake horn, older EJWA, S & B air filter setup, Industrial Injection HO VP, and Airdog 165 LP/filtration system, stock HO injectors. I do have DAP 100 HP injectors to put back into it when I receive them back from DAP. They are new but I sent them back and they found that two of them were at 302-303 bar instead of 310-312 bar, which was causing my idle to be a little bit lopey like a muscle car camshaft. In 6th gear on cruise control running 60 mph, my EGTs are running around 650 - 715. Is that normal or high? I don't…

My first time posting in here. I don’t know if I’m posting in the correct section or not so, my apologies if I’m not. I need some enlightenment from the knowledge you guys have. I’m looking to get around 475-525 hp. I currently have a fass 165, quadzilla adrenaline with comp tunes, all necessary gauges and a S&B intake. The turbo I have my eye on is a Smeding SM-S362-68-14CM. What I’m wondering is what size injectors I’m gonna need to fuel that turbo and keep the EGTs reasonable. Truck is a 2000 24 Valve auto. Thanks. Thinking of this turbo because it’s fairly easy to get here in Canada

Just when I think I've come up with a logical solution to what's not really a problem, I see that Robert Bosch's company has beat me to it. http://www.dieselmechanic.info/common-rail/bosch-common-rail-system-intercooler-bypass.html However, I think mine would be operated by a choke cable, and maybe later an additional IAT sensor and a stepper motor.

I got my new injectors from DAP installed an Friday and I can’t be happier with how the truck runs. It’s smoother at idle, has way less idle haze when the engine is cold, and they pair perfectly with the Calibrated Power hx35 stealth 64. The smoke output is less than the 7x.0085 injectors they replaced. I also got a quadzilla adrenaline at the same time as the injectors but it ended up getting back ordered so I’m still running my 12 year old Edge Juice with Attitude for now. The sales staff at DAP are second to none. I will definitely use them again in the future.

It's not a huge deal compared to some.other members here but I've reached 150,000 miles. I've only owned the truck for a little over a year. She had about 138k on the clock when I bought it but so far, no major problems and looking forward to the next several hundred thousand miles behind the wheel.

Happy holidays to all !! Here's hoping '21 will be better ! Sorry for another mpg question and I'm sure this has probably been discussed to death somewhere?? So I've owned my truck for almost a year now, I don't drive it much, mainly bought it for hauling camper, dirt bike and such, I don't think I've put more than 6 - 7 tanks of fuel thru it, maybe 3 since I got quadzilla. Was I mistaken thinking I was going to get better milage with the quad? I love the way it runs, and I drive pretty conservitaly most the time and I have yet to get over 12 mpg ! That was before and after quad, no difference other than power, which is nice but?? Now I'…

  7. Hi all. I finally got my truck back running. Turbo and Exhaust manifold and a few other odds and ends needed some love and attention. I'm planning to install the Quadzilla in the next couple of days. All the sensors are in so it should go easy. I have a basically stock motor mods are BHAF, FRRP Factory Raptor Replacement Pump, Bosh RV 275 injectors. I will be putting an upgrade turbo S200GX-E in the truck soon and may upgrade my injectors at some point but the the ones in there went in in Feb 2018 and don't have a lot of miles on them so they stay for now. I don't know the first thing about this beautiful piece…

  8. Ok so I'm exploring options for s472 sizing, as I've found one that's a 72/96 1.15 non gated housing. If I pair it up with a stock hx35 with 125 or 150hp injectors, would that be a good combo for towing, but more daily-ing than towing. I'm planning on starting a welding business and my welding rig doesn't have a ball so I can go get big sections of pipe or steel, and I've always wanted to put compounds on my truck.

If I wanted to build a tune around OEM timing, what would I set the maxes at??? I've been driving with my quad on lvl 0 all week and I like it but it needs a few small tweeks to be perfect, so figured I'd build a tune but then....... I realized I have no idea what the oem timing maxes are lol 😅

  10. It's been my observation that since I put my lift pump on an ECM-triggered relay that the pump (none of three tried) doesn't do its normal startup routine. I hypothesize it's because the pulse-width-modulation signal from the ECM isn't reliably making my normal relay close. In a semi-unrelated internet search this popped up. It's a solid-state relay that fits the normal mechanical relay base. Hella part number: H41773001 http://hellahd.com/index.php/default/electrics/relays/mini-iso-relays/12v-spst/h41773001-931773987/ https://www.lingenfelter.com/PDFdownloads/HELLA41773001.pdf Thoughts? I expect most will be 'that's a solution to a problem that doesn't…

  11. When I purchased the truck in 2017 it was named The Dragon becuase I drove it home from Kingman AZ to Los Angeles blowing a massive amount of coal all the way home. Little by little I found mostly all of the causes of the smoke. There were many of them. The truck had a Power Edge EZ which was manufactured in 07-29-2002 I suspected that it could be contributing to the smoke issue and it was. I took it out and cut the smoke down about 30% At that tie I had exactly zero knowledge of tuners. I'm now about to learn about them, particularly the recommended Quadzilla. The description of the Power Edge EZ is as follows: The …

For those familiar with the turbo BlueOx01 installed recently, that turbo is on sale if you're willing to wait a while to get it. I am strongly considering it and thought I'd share. This is the 12 cm^2 version, not the 9. https://www.benzforce.com/products/pre-order-holset-he351w-4043980-4043982-he351

Good day all. I have a friend with an Edge CTS and the wiring harness socket failed in the back of his monitor & re-soldering failed to work even with a new harness. Does anyone know if any CTS monitor, no matter the vehicle, will work (with obviously the correct rear plug)? I would think the brain is in the under hood Edge box and the monitor is only just that: a monitor. Thank you very much.

  14. Check out the video we shot after installing the custom 47RE that I built for Dynomite Diesel Products. This project that they are doing might be of interest to all of the 2nd Gen guys on here. This particular truck is a 1997 with a 12 valve (and 16K original miles!), but many of the concepts will apply to the 24 valves as well. It might be fun to follow along as they do their turbo testing and fueling mods in stages, all while documenting everything with actual dyno numbers. It might help a lot of guys avoid some of the pitfalls and poor setups that we see out there.

So for quite sometime now, been driving like a hyper miler. Or atleast, I thought. Try to drive within the power band, coast to lights, use brakes as little as possible. So I got the idea, let's see how I do driving like a normal person. So instead of driving in2nd gear, to keep the rpms up, I drive normally letting the transmission determine the gear. I went from an approximate 400 miles per tank to an approximate 600 per tank. I gained another 200 miles by just keeping the gear selector in drive!!! Now I'm going to try and see what else I can squeeze from this puppy!

I've searched around and failed to find a thread comparing the two subject injectors (or similar). Both are listed as 100 HP injectors, which interests me a great deal. With an unknown auto transmission (I have done the Moses Ludel recommended in-frame upgrades for solenoids, servos, pistons, etc) and - for now - HY35 turbo I don't see the need to spend the extra $85 for 7x.010s. The true benefit I see to that size is that so many of you fellows with Quadzillas run them. Some of my trips are very long, some if my trips are very short - is there a benefit to smaller, but a larger number of holes? I only have 18k pound license plates, so heavy towing isn't reall…

Dieselfuture is the one who first brought it to my attention of greasing the front hub bearings thru the ABS sensor hole. Now on my third front hub replacement yesterday in a couple years to both my 2nd gens you tend to get tired of the expense and time. I was only in there to replace the brake pads and discovered a rough spot in the wheel hub bearing. The only way to tell was to turn by hand with the wheel, the caliper and rotor off because just a few weeks earlier I had checked for looseness in the wheels, so on I went with a new Timken hub. This time they got me for over 300 bucks because I needed one right away to be up and running by Monday. Now before re…

I’m getting set to add some HP to my ‘01-2500 (vehicle details in my ‘Garage’), and I would greatly appreciate some suggestions about what might best fit my application in the way of injectors and a turbo. I use the truck for towing and hauling, and as a daily driver. I frequently am around 13,000 GVW when hauling, and sometimes close to 25,000 GCW when towing. I am not going to be pulling sleds or putting the truck on a track, and I’m not interested in high-RPM pulls. I very rarely hit 3000 RPM, and generally keep it below 2500. I am interested in a setup that spools quickly, has good mid range boost and power, has a decent top range, doesn’t …

Anyone know what type of steel is used on diesel fuel injector tips? Has to be pretty good steel to help stop premature wear. To also fight against dirty fuel wearing out the tip. Another question too is how do they adjust them to get a balanced flow match?
