This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Monday I will be changing the oil for the second time since ownership. I know some send off oil samples.. where do you send it? Is there a sample kit to buy? I will be doing the Fass fuel filter and water separator for the first time. First question.. Are all the cross referenced filters on one of the pages I see here respectable replacements? Should I pour some fuel into the filter? Will it be difficult to start the truck? Not sure what to expect....

It won't be long and it'll be that time. I recently bought this truck, previous owner used regular rotella. I am considering full synthetic rotella oil. In the manual it says 7500 miles between changes, would that extend if synthetic is used? For those of you that run synthetic, what interval do you change yours? Just a curious question to see if the extra expense has more advantage than just better oil. Thanks

Now I know this has been covered a lot, but no one could ever really answer the question I have. Figured I'd ask here since we have our own oil expert on board. I know the change interval in the manual says 7500mi. My situation in a bit different being my truck only sees ~ 5000 mi. a year. It is a work truck and I usually only use it to pull trailers and haul. It does not see a lot of highway driving either. I use Rotella 15-w40 and change twice a year or every 2500 mi. Can I change only 1 time a year and be safe? Should I go to synthetic if I only change once a year? Our mech at work is old school and still believes in the 3 month 3000 mi. thing. Some of the vans there m…

I know this should start a interesting debate but I’m curious everybody’s opinion.... I want to change the oil in my Cummins turbo, curious what brands you guys recommend, previous owner ran Rotella 15 W 40 and change the oil every 7 to 10,000 miles, he also ran a quart of Lucas at every oil change, my question is what are you guys thoughts about running a full synthetic and which brand?

  5. Hey all, sadly back again Noticed a little bit of oil was coming out around that gasket on the intake horn and the bolt there. Backstory, previous turbos I had a year ago ended up both going (P/O had a homemade budget compound setup). I swapped setups with a guy and the turbos no **** blew and were gushing oil when they went on his truck. I had a haze at idle and told him I didn't know condition etc and he still wanted them for the piping at the least. I'm assuming there was a good amount of oil in my intake system (intercooler etc). Is it possibly it's finally making it's way up? I have a brand new GT turbo with maybe 2k miles on it. …

Alright, someone please tell me this is about normal? I switched to Amsoil on my last oil change. I'm now about 4300 miles into it, and I checked the oil level recently before I went down to see my parents for christmas. Its a good thing I checked! The level was below the add mark and I had 2 quarts left of this liquid gold to add back into the safe area. I noticed the oil pressure gauge showed a little bit longer of a delay in building pressure on initial startup and pressure was a little lower than normal. Nothing that raised a red flag, but now I know why it was so. I have noticed since the change that the blowby vapor looks as though it has increased and there is …

I noticed while looking under my hood that I have a small leak around the oil filter head where it attaches to the block. The oil cooler is here and I am wondering if this is a problem with the cooler gasket. Is this something I should address imediately or is it something I can wait on for a few thousand miles until I get home? I really dont want to deal with water in the oil, but dont really have every thing I need here in Iowa.

Finally had to change a oil cooler gasket on my truck. It has been seeping for the last 5 to 6 months leaving a small bit of coolant on the floor of the garage. I will let you all know that oil cooler gasket set is a Cummins only thing. I tried NAPA, Autozone and few others and no one stocks this gasket set. As for changing it out is pretty straight forward. You need to remove the air filter and the oil filter. On the oil filter housing remove the oil hose for the turbo. Then the bolts holding the oil cooler in place are all 10mm heads. After I got it pull out I compared the new and old gasket to realize that the rubber seal lip had failed. You c…

Ok- I'm about to embark on an oil cooler gasket replacement. Has anyone done it? Any tips? My search of the site has not given me any guidance, so I'll post whatever I learn in the process. if you know of any resources, please let me know. My oil cooler leaks coolant intermittently, mostly not at all bust occasionally a lot, enough to require a gallon or more of new fluid in a day or two. I found the cummins parts for $35 on ebay. I'd welcome any input...

Hi All, Just did my first oil change (oil was fresh 4K miles ago when I bought it). My Haynes manual says to torque the oil plug to 60 ft lbs. I thought that was a bit much so I only torqued it to 40. The plug bolt broke!! I torqued its replacement to 35. Is that enough? Thanks,Jay

  11. Hey everyone, I bought my first diesel about a year ago and have been learning a ton through you all here. Thanks so much for this forum! From my research, it seems common for the 5.9's to 'mark their territory' with a little drop of oil. After driving the truck and then parking it, it seems to leave 3-5 drops of oil. I shared a picture underneath the truck where the drops seem to be coming from, but honestly couldn't figure out what this part is. I read the FSM and think maybe it's my VP44? Any advice on if a few drops of oil is normal, should I fix this asap, or not worry about it? thanks! Jared

So, I can't find it anywhere anymore, but I thought I saw a thread on here talking about using toilet paper in an oil filter container. Anyone know about it and if so, is it still available?

I know this has been hit on before but could not find it. Anyway I changed my oil the other day and the filter was full to the top, when I started unscrewing it it started leaking out. It was never that full in the past with my other motor, it was always about 3/4. This is my second filter change sence I put eng. in so dont know this motor as well as the other eng. Maybe thats a good thing If you knew my other motor you would get it.

  16. Hey all,I have had my oil filter head leaking for awhile all over the side of the block, so it is time to pull it off and replace the gaskets. I looked in the FSM for some guidance on what to do, but no luck. Is there anything special I need to be aware of besides draining the coolant? I bought 2 paper gaskets from cummins (the parts guy advised me that is all I should need). I figure the proper torque on the bolts should be 18ftlbs based on the size of the fasteners. Thanks,Chris

I know its been asked so forgive me, but I have done the Moparman mod and before I took my truck to the body shop I got maybe one drip of oil from the tube after 4 months with the mod. However after I got my truck back it drips after every trip. Just a small drop. I did the blow by test and it Is perfect. Is this normal or something I need to look into? Thanks guys!

Anyone know what this thread size is and what its actually called? 1/8" ntp screws into it but this is a straight thread that seals with an o ring. NPT is tapered. Thread pitch gauges are at the shop
