2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

  1. Well, after a lot of reading and a conversation with Mike, more timing should lower EGT and engine load, however when I added timing my load and EGTs went up. Before I got to the numbers he thought would work, engine started to buck, sign of over advance. When I backed off the timing both across the RPM band and cruise things got better. This led me to a thread Mike wrote about in the winter he pulled timing out due to higher cetane numbers in winter fuel. This makes sense, but got me thinking about the fuel our trucks were designed to run with, which was not ultra low sulfer biodiesel fuel, so I started digging. Per NDSU AE 1240 No. 2 diesel fuel u…

Just got my second oil sample back from Blackstone and all looked good except silicone. What causes silicone levels to be high? I thought it was air filter but it had a new Bhaf the entire run. Had stock air box and clean looking filter when I got it and silicone was high then too.

  4. The bobbing when i come off throttle and truck is trying to idle is getting worse with the increased temperature outside and when i have my ac on when it revs up it blows quite a bit of smoke out. It stops when i get to a speed less than about 10mph. Question is could i break the vss line momentarily or ground it out to trick the ecm that i stopped and return to a normal idle?

Does the turbo on my 2001 have a way to limit the boost? When using my quad box on level 3 (same as Edge Comp 5x5) I hit 40 PSI... I was told on the other forum that I can get a boost elbow to stop it at a certain point? Any explanation of this would be appreciated.

Towing for the first time since plugging in boost foother. 7x09 injectors have been running toasty had to peddle off egts on most all grades while towing even light loads. With heavy loads 10k machin 5k trailer your have really watch it on flat ground. Pulling the few grades from mtn home to Jerome Cruise is on at 1800rpm pulling 30lbs of boost on grades that are 3 or so miles long hottest I saw was 1100 before I'd be peddling of the maintain 1200 and easily saw 1400. On the way back theres a steeper longer grade. I'll see what it does there I expect 1200ish and more boost. So far this boost fooler seems to be working wonder…

I ended up trading my edge comp for a smarty. I received a boost fooler with the trade but haven't installed it. Not sure if I really need it. I don't seem to have an issue. I have only pushed it a couple of times to see where it would go... and it seems to be around 30-32. I do throw a fueling code tho. Should I install it just to avoid the code? Will it void it? Will it do anything else for me?

I have a 02 6 SPD. Has 150hp injectors and boost elbow. Truck runs great but once it hits about 30 psi boost it stops adding fuel, just like a light switch. Do I need a boost fooler? I had a tst at one time and don't remember my truck doing this. Thanks Adam

Hi guys, Well I am in the process of getting my gauges. (Boost Pyro, and tranny.) I put on my BHAF, adjustable boost elbow, and raptor 150. After doing some more research I realized I need a boost fooler. (Could explain the poor performance I am getting from the truck while towing. :banghead: loss of mpg and power?) I will more than likely get the edge comp for a chip but can't swing it right now. Plus I don't have the money on the backside to upgrade the tranny because I know I won't stick to running the box on level 1. Will this boost fooler work or should I look for another plug and play model?http://www.parleysdieselperformance.com/products/quadzilla-boo…

Hello, I have a 02 Ram 2500 with the cummins H.O. 6 speed RWD. I have done the BHAF mod, free flowing 4" exhaust with glasspack, and I just got a superchips max microtuner (got it for a steal). Would my truck be a good candidate for a boost fooler? From what I have seen and researched this would be a good next modification for my truck. Just wondering if this would be safe and effective? I have heard this would gain 10-50 hp depending on mods so I'm huessing mine would be in the 10-15hp range but maybe up to 40-50lbs-tq. Any advice?

I want to install a boost gauge on a stock truck. Wish to be able to know if I've got a boost leak and have a starting point for other mods. I have Isspro gauges currently and want to match. Looks like they are pretty cheap, so I want to install one. This will help to evaluate if I need new boost elbows, etc. My gut feeling is that my boost is not providing all it should. Seems easier to install a gauge than to build a boost testing unit. Although that would be cool too. Can't find that article or thread. Where does the boost gauge get tapped into the boost system for reading?

Have a question regarding my boost readings. I have a DPS 62/65/12 on the truck with 125 hp injectors. It should be boosting up to 45 psi. However, I am only seeing maybe 41 psi uphill with my foot on the floor. I've tried cleaning the MAP sensor out (there was lots of carbon in it), but it didn't get to the levels it should. I've adjusted the wastegate rod all the way closed in case the drive pressure was opening the flap, but that didn't help either. Anyone have any similar experiences or advice? Thanks

So I did a boost leak test on my 99 cummins found a t clamp that needed to be tighted. Took the tester to 25 psi. The gauge is slowly going down like .5psi every couple second. Did the soapy water test can't find anything. Can't hear anything. Is this normal to loose psi with it pressured up or should it stay at 25psi.

Looking for ideas on building a leak tester for my turbo and associated piping. Thinking of a four inch PVC pipe, capped with a schrader valve and gauge in the cap. How do you attach the pipe to the turbo?

Hi everyone I am new to this forum. I have a 99 dodge 3500 that I have owned since new. I am recently having higher egts, lower fuel mileage and lower boost. My truck has an edge comp box that I run on 3, pusher intake, pac brake, HX35/40 Hybrid turbo from PDR, RV275 injectors, stock lift pump mounted on the frame with 3/8" fuel line and no banjo bolts. 12psi at idle, about 9 at wot. AFE cold air intake and 4" exhaust. So recently I put a new IAT sensor in because my fuel mileage dropped to 9-10 coming back from South Dakota with 10000 pounds where I used to get 15. It raised it to 12 but my boost is still low at about 21-22 psi and my egts go to 1200 real easy. I use thi…

I have a new to me 2002 ram 2500 6 speed with a fair amount of mods done to it. I came with the quadzilla adrenaline and I'm having issues with the boost gauge on the quadzilla sticking at 47psi this in turn causes tons of black smoke and poor running. I turn the truck off and restart it and most times it goes back to normal. My question is where does the quadzilla get it's boost pressure from? MAP sensor? If it gets it from the MAP sensor and it is causing the problem shouldn't a cel come on? I'm also having a hell of a time getting a good tune downloaded but that's another issue all together
